Few fan reactions surprise me after five years of working on the site, so while the worry from some Glee fans didn't surprise me, it did prompt me to write this post.

Yes, Glee ratings are well below their heyday, but the show is still Fox's #2 rated live action scripted show this Fall. Unless the cast or producers decide to call it quits (which I don't try to predict), it's coming back next season.

The observant will note that Ben & Kate is now predicted as certain to be canceled as its ratings slowly descend. I wanted to get Glee in the headline this week, so expect Ben & Kate in the headline next week.

Two years ago when Fox's Lone Star, "Lone Star'd" its premiere rating (1.3) it was yanked after its second episode (which had a 1.0). This season, The Mob Doctor has been nearly as woeful (1.5, 1.3, 1.0, 0.9, 1.0, 0.8) and yet looks like it will air most or all of its 13 episode order before vanishing.

Raising Hope is predicted as "certain to be renewed" even with its somewhat weak early ratings. While the syndication gods ruling Fox aren't quite as predictable as those ruling CBS, it would take nothing short of a cataclysm to prevent the show from getting a fourth season. Read more about it here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

i think glee has actually been much better this season. season 3 however tested my patience and perseverance to even finish. so I’m not surprised people have tuned out and never come back.

  • Nick

Raising Hope is doing fine. Even if it wasn’t 1 season from syndication, 0.85 is still good.

  • Nick

Why would Bones, which is lower rated, get a full season renewal while Glee gets a shortened season. This doesn’t make sense. aias it because it’s a veteran show?

  • Jim

If any FOX TV show should go into “final season” status next season, it should be “The Simpsons”.

  • Nick

If both shows are getting a final season, Bones’s is more likely to be full because it is crucial in the structure of Fox’s Mondays. Glee is definitely not crucial to the schedule on Thursday.

  • Wright

I’m really going to miss Fringe. The Mob Doctor, Bones and New Girl are good too. I could care less about the others.

  • Laura

Bones always got above 3.0’s in the Thursday slot. Glee is barely getting a 2.0.
All shows on Monday at 8pm couldn’t get more than 1.5, Bones is getting steady 2.0’s every week.

  • Ashley

I have watched the first 3 seasons of the show and bought most of seasons 1 and 2 of their music. Even I think the show sucks now. I can’t believe I was ever so obsessed with it. It’s gone down the tubes. I wish it would be cancelled.

I never had any doubt that Glee would get a Season 5 (and a full 22 episodes). I would suspect that the 5th Season would be the last as most of the cast contracts are most likely for 5 years.

Also, because it’s the #2 rated live action scripted show, it would definitely get a full season.

    Haters gonna hate!

  • mayorofsmpleton

Thanks for being the voice of sanity. Lifestyle agendas. Some people are truly ignorant.

GLEE’s costs could be an issue but a lot of that has been fixed by trimming the cast to certain episodes per year. While the core still will be in all 22 there are a number of players that will have “arcs” of 5-10 episodes spread out over the season. That keeps costs much lower.

  • Stacey

Glee is actually pretty solid this season and the 4th episode was one of the best they’ve ever done, both story and music. Pretty much all the episodes have been better than most of Season 3. They’ve cut back on the number of songs per ep, they have some new writers on board this season. I think they need to fill out the New York side more but I like the split (I’d actually be fine if they decided to just do the New York side of the show, bringing in some of the other cast like Santana and Blaine). The songs are generally less heavily produced this season, not so much autotune or processing. They’ve had some great songs so far and I expect more to follow. I’m really enjoying Glee much more this season than I did Season 3. I’m not concerned about it getting a Season 5 (and I do think it will get a full order). It would be nice if they actually made an effort to promote the show well, though.

When Fringe finishes, I won’t have a single show on Fox that I watch anymore. Forget NBC – this is the network that has gone the most downhill in recent years.

  • sofaspud

    @ Jim

“The Simpsons” is like “Saturday Night Live”. If more people were aware it was still on the air, they might remember to cancel it. Both shows stopped being funny several presidents ago.

  • rob60990

Well Billy Martins wins worst schedule ever.

  • ToXiX

I watched the pilot for Mob Doctor and really enjoyed it. But immediately stopped watching after the ratings came in the next day. Expecting Fox to pull it. While small, the show has a fanbase and its nice to see Fox let this show air all 13 episodes even if Its only because.they have nothing else to replace it with.

  • AgendasRUs

Perhaps lifestyle agenda is the wrong term, but Glee is certainly a show that purposely promotes certain philosophies, sometimes at the expense of actual storytelling or character development. IMO, some of this agenda pushing undermines what Ryan Murphy wants to do by stereotyping and making characters with “underdog” or alternative statuses near caricatures.

You get sick of the constant “conflict” with alternative students to point where you just don’t want to watch anymore. Why is Wade even a character? There seems to be no point to him other than including a transgender character because there was nowhere else to go.

  • ars041

those that used to watch glee but don’t anymore were never fans to begin with so those people have no room to talk

  • Dan

Mob Doctor will burn through 11 of its 13 eps by January 14. If Fox schedules the remaining two episodes sometime in December than all 13 will be aired and Fox can put the show behind it. Clever cancellation titles iinclude The Mob Doctor gets whacked or The Mob Doctor Flatlines. I guess Fox thought to themselves no matter how garbage the numbers are, they wanted to commit to airing all 13 eps. I also assume Fox did Not believe Touch was a good replacement and wanted to keep it for midseason due to the lack of dramas.

Bones and Glee aré safe. Next season could be the final one for Glee of ratings keep falling but because of their lack of dramas Fox will keep it around. The only real bubble shows for Fox aré Cleveland Show and Mindy project. Fox could order a short 13 ep final season of Cleveland to get over 100. Right now the show will have a total of 90 eps of Fox cancels it. If Fox renews it now they can get the season 5 eps ready for next fall if they good over a few Season 4 eps. The Mindy Project could go either way but Since Ben & Kate and Goodwin Games aré destined for cancellation Fox may find a way to keep Mindy. Raising Hope and New Girl aré safe for 2013-2014 and all of Foxs 8-10 comedies have already been renewed.
