Few fan reactions surprise me after five years of working on the site, so while the worry from some Glee fans didn't surprise me, it did prompt me to write this post.

Yes, Glee ratings are well below their heyday, but the show is still Fox's #2 rated live action scripted show this Fall. Unless the cast or producers decide to call it quits (which I don't try to predict), it's coming back next season.

The observant will note that Ben & Kate is now predicted as certain to be canceled as its ratings slowly descend. I wanted to get Glee in the headline this week, so expect Ben & Kate in the headline next week.

Two years ago when Fox's Lone Star, "Lone Star'd" its premiere rating (1.3) it was yanked after its second episode (which had a 1.0). This season, The Mob Doctor has been nearly as woeful (1.5, 1.3, 1.0, 0.9, 1.0, 0.8) and yet looks like it will air most or all of its 13 episode order before vanishing.

Raising Hope is predicted as "certain to be renewed" even with its somewhat weak early ratings. While the syndication gods ruling Fox aren't quite as predictable as those ruling CBS, it would take nothing short of a cataclysm to prevent the show from getting a fourth season. Read more about it here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I hope Glee stays on the air for a long time just to annoy the Parents Television Council morons.

I have been watching the 2008 and 2009 seasons of Fringe on the Science channel. Wow what a difference from the newer ones. Why do new writers always mess up the stories. The first ones were great. Never liked the series with the bald guys. That ruined the whole series.

Glee and Fringe are 2 show I’m watching on broadcast.
Been fans and now become hater. Luckily Fringe gonna end soon.

    @Anthony Parello (AP076)
Fringe is on Friday and the fees were cut because WB wanted it syndicated, that’s not what I asked, I want to know how low can the ratings go from Mondays to Thursdays and still be renewed. Last season NBC would renew any show that got 1.5 or higher on any night, I’m wondering if FOX will go there this year

You don’t have a choice to be black, latino, caucasion, etc…and being born a race is not a lifestyle you can choose of coarse. -Although you DO have a choice of who you Love- So That would be a lifestyle.

Glee jumped the shark last week with the moronic super heroes episode! Have they gotten that thin on ideas that this is all that’s left. The show is a mess! It was cute for a season and a half. Not cute anymore.

Ha, Glee fans are more worried about the fact that it *has* been renewed than it not happening. Of *course* they were going to renew it, if they didn’t get 5 seasons out of if it wouldn’t be eligible for syndication. Syndication, clearly being the only way they will be able to recoup production costs.

Fox is full of garbage this season, should of kept Terra Nova & Alcatraz; but they love canceling all their good shows, so guess this is what happens…

  • Bob Saget

Ben and Kate is cute, it’s not that funny, but i like the chemistry of the cast. Although i won’t be too upset with it if it is cancelled. All my FOX shows are looking good otherwise.

Mob Doctor is sucking, bring back HOUSE!

Looking forward to Sectionals tonight! Diana Agron is back! And I hope to see Jessica Sanchez soon!

I like Glee. I wasn’t happy at the beginning of season 4, with the split locale set up limiting character and storyline development, but they’ve done pretty well with it. 3 of the 9 episodes aired thus far this season were excellently done, as far as I’m concerned. The others ranged from good to OK. I’m less enthused by the new cast than the veterans, but a couple are starting to engage me. I LOVED “Swan Song” and “The Break-Up”. Both were very well done, with a good balance.

It’s not going to happen, but I do wish they’d do a NYC spin-off, with some of the rest of the veterans heading over to NYC to join Kurt & Rachel: Santana (already rumored) and perhaps Mike and/or Mercedes. More adult issues and a cast that already have a following, plus allowing both locales to have some more storyline and character development, instead of squeezing everything in and truncating storylines.

But, I’m just satisfied that it’s stands a better than even chance of being renewed. It’s gotten me hooked on some younger musical artists than I would have listened to, as well as allowing me a break from the work-week where I can actually enjoy at least an hour.

Glad about “Bones”, as well, for similar reasons. I like to actually use my mind and sense of humor…Very good cast chemistry and the stories are usually very interesting. Been watching it for a while now :)

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy GLEE!!!!!!! And after all the show is getting better this season, way better than season 3 … JUST ENJOY THE MUSIC AND LET THE SILLY STORYLINE GO! ;) #8SeasonsAndAWorldTour
