Happy Thanksgiving! (Ratings Delays)

As those of us in the USA celebrate Thanksgiving, there will be delays in what appears on the site versus a normal Thursday and Friday.

The preliminary Fast Affiliate primetime broadcast network ratings should be published more or less on their normal schedule (Wednesday night's ratings already available here), but most of the rest of what we'd normally publish on a Thursday and Friday will likely be delayed until early next week due to the holiday.

That means those looking for daily Final Broadcast Ratings, Cable News Ratings/Daily Cable Ratings and the weekly Late Night and Soap Opera Ratings will probably have to wait until early next week.

    The person who probably had the most influence on making Thankgiving a national holiday, and is often called “the Mother of Thanksgiving” is: Sara Josepha Hale, the editor of Godey’s Lady Book, an 1800′s magazine. In 1858 she lobied for a nationwide Thanksgiving to be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month. On Oct. 3, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving. Every year after that Presidents would proclaim the holiday, but, it was not until Dec. 26, 1941 that Congress made Thankgiving an offical national holiday to be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month.

    I made a slight error in my eariler paragraph. Sara Josepha Hale lobied for a nationwide Thanksgiving to be celebrated on the “Last” Thursday of the November, (not the Fourth Thursday of the month). It was the Congress on Dec. 26, 1941 which made Thanksgiving an offical nationwide holiday to be celebrated on the Fourth Thursday in November.

    Happy (belated) Thanksgiving to everyone!

    Speaking of Nielsen, saw an interesting article on the effect of Sandy on the ratings.

    Thanksgiving in Canada is held on what the U.S. calls Columbus Day. So, they are celebrating Columbus’ discovery of North America vs. when the pilgrims arrived.

    @Bill

    Will the Live+7 ratings be delayed, too, or be out tomorrow?

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

    Sarah: If last year is any indication: the normal Live+7 numbers will be delayed until Tuesday.

    The Wednesday finals (cable and broadcast) will be delayed until Monday night. Thursday and Friday finals will come out Tuesday morning along with the Live+7 ratings and the weekend broadcast/cable finals and the rest of the weekly data we’d normally see Tuesday morning will come out late Tuesday afternoon. Monday’s final data will come out Wednesday morning/early afternoon and Tuesday’s final data will come out late Wednesday afternoon with everything (mostly) getting caught up and back on the normal schedule by Thursday afternoon.
