Let me get it out of the way: yes, I am definitely experimenting with headlining in an attempt to increase page views for reasons explained below. And of course The Walking Dead will be renewed. But Alphas? Its future isn't as bright.
Back again with the scripted cable series renew/cancel status list - no predictions, just the status -- there's no good/easy/reliable way to make predictions with cable shows.
The alpha test of this list went OK and I really appreciate everyone's feedback. For now I'm sticking with it, but alas the traffic wasn't very good.
If it doesn't work out I don't want to hear any "TV by the Numbers never loved that list! They always planned to burn it off! They didn't promote it enough! It had the wrong title! It had a bad timeslot!"nonsense. I love this list and want it to succeed!
We have never gone with the begging style of "please link/tweet/share this post" route. We're data driven and we stick with what we can see folks are interested in. But it can't hurt if you tell your friends and family!
--
Most of the shows on the list have statuses - if there isn't a status that just means there has been no announcement at the time of the most recent update (see date at top of post and/or above the table below).
If you find errors or omissions (excluding unscripted shows, kids shows or shows that have not aired yet) please note them in the comments and I'll update the table.
Notes:
- Kids shows and Adult Swim shows are not on the list below
- I've seen some squawking about shows on the list below that are owned/created by networks/studios outside of the United States. For purposes of this list, which focuses on U.S. cable networks, I'm only focused on where the shows air here in U.S.
- Shows from overseas like Downton Abbey & Sherlock that air on PBS in the U.S. are not in the list below (PBS is not a cable network), though ITV has renewed Downton Abbey for a 4th season in the UK which will ultimately aire in the states.
- Despite some current inconsistencies in the table below, I do not intend to track episode orders or return dates specifically in this table at this time. The primary goal of the table is: what's been renewed, what's been canceled, and what shows fates haven't been decided yet.

It turned out that Unsupervised was renewed after all?
nope, that’s just a vestige of when I changed the status to a blank no status, I updated it within the post directly but did not blank it out in my spreadsheet so the next time I pasted the spreadsheet in I overwrote my correction (now fixed in the spreadsheet too, thanks!).
The first-line PR contact for the show at FX couldn’t give me a comment and bounced me to someone higher who I have not yet heard back from. Normally I would view that as an indication that the news probably isn’t good, but in this case it’s just as likely I got lost in the shuffle. I’ll ping him again.
I hope Alphas gets renewed. Want to see Gary rescue Bill & hold it over him.
Glad TBS Wedding Band Added to list.
Ryan Cartwright, who plays Gary on Alphas, said decision on renewal pushed back to “mid-December.”
What about “Leverage”? This is frustrating and becomes harder every day!!!
@Robert Seidman
OK, thank you.
Great job on the list of shows. Pretty much all the shows i watch have been renewed.
I really liked the killing… also. American horror story is awesome so hopefully never cancelled..
Alternative headline: “Feature Nobody Reads About Shows Nobody Watches”
@Robert Seidman
I’m sure it boils down to financial negotiations and the people on the show thinking “Hey, we want to be PAID!” It delays the renewal announcement but generally a good problem for AMC to have.
I think you are right. You just know that with amazingly high ratings and Mad Men with only one remaining season, the TWD actors along with the producers want a much better deal.
@JJ – I would bet my ass that AMC wants to up the episode order of TWD. It’s probably their only original drama making money, and it’s probably making a wad of it.
TWD is a huge hit for AMC, and all around for cable. I wouldn’t mind a bigger episode order. Season 3 has shown they know what they are doing now and each episode has been amazing so far this year. They can easily handle doing an 18-22 episode season. Two runs of 8-11 episodes in the fall and the spring is what they will be gunning for.
Robert: Why bother with a show aired in the current year if the show has been canceled since before the current season? Sanctuary was canceled back in May.
I picked an arbitrary line and it was “aired new episodes within the last year.”
Still missing Torchwood (Starz) and Primeval: New World (though it hasn’t aired yet on Syfy).
Just announced that Merlin’s 5th season will be it’s last
@sucker: things that haven’t aired aren’t on the list. Torchwood hasn’t aired an original episode in over a year and until I hear otherwise I’m just assuming it’s finished for now.
I’m really surprised to see Starz canceled “Boss” after Season 2. I really enjoyed that show and Kelsey Grammar as mayor Tom Kane was fantastic! Bad move by Starz which has only 1 hit show with “Spartacus” (which is ending this final season) and “Magic City” is just decent at best.
Thanks for the list again. All I can say is, it’ll be a shame if this list goes away since this is probably the best (and only?) place in the entire internet to so easily see all the main scripted cable shows and their statuses in one place. Hope the traffic picks up!
One way to improve traffic…start making predictions!
Even if they’re much more likely to be wrong or less scientific, we’d still love them and I can almost guarantee it would increase traffic to the list. Even just extremely safe predictions would be worth it…you already said one right in the intro this week – of course Walking Dead will be renewed. So you already have one “certain to be renewed”!
I wouldn’t mind if that leaves most shows “on the bubble”.
The only thing is, I do really like seeing the list separated by network like you have it now instead of the bubble watch prediction way of doing it by likelihood of renewal regardless of network. It’s so nice here to look from network to network and view their shows and statuses as a block rather than scrolling through the different renewal likelihood statuses to find all the different separated shows of one network like with the bubble watch.
So for instance, one way you could do predictions is leave the list organised exactly how you have it now and just add an extra column for predictions. Then start by listing them all as “on the bubble”. Then perhaps just have three statuses for cable shows since it’s harder, such as “more likely to be canceled”, “on the bubble” and “more likely to be renewed”. Then go through all the shows using your common sense, such as changing The Walking Dead to “more likely to be renewed”, etc.
Like I said last post, it may not be as “scientific” and there may be many, many more “on the bubble”, but it would be predictions, it would get more traffic and in time, as you continue doing it, you just may develop a more precise way of predicting them like you have with the network shows.
There are formatting issues with adding another column and as you note in your first comment almost all shows other than a few obvious renewals would be on the bubble.
