Let me get it out of the way: yes, I am definitely experimenting with headlining in an attempt to increase page views for reasons explained below. And of course The Walking Dead will be renewed. But Alphas? Its future isn't as bright.

Back again with the scripted cable series renew/cancel status list - no predictions, just the status -- there's no good/easy/reliable way to make predictions with cable shows.

The alpha test of this list went OK and I really appreciate everyone's feedback. For now I'm sticking with it, but alas the traffic wasn't very good.

If it doesn't work out I don't want to hear any "TV by the Numbers never loved that list! They always planned to burn it off! They didn't promote it enough! It had the wrong title! It had a bad timeslot!"nonsense. I love this list and want it to succeed!

We have never gone with the begging style of "please link/tweet/share this post" route. We're data driven and we stick with what we can see folks are interested in. But it can't hurt if you tell your friends and family!

Most of the shows on the list have statuses - if there isn't a status that just means there has been no announcement at the time of the most recent update (see date at top of post and/or above the table below).

If you find errors or omissions (excluding unscripted shows, kids shows or shows that have not aired yet) please note them in the comments and I'll update the table.

  • Kids shows and Adult Swim shows are not on the list below
  • I've seen some squawking about shows on the list below that are owned/created by networks/studios outside of the United States. For purposes of this list, which focuses on U.S. cable networks, I'm only focused on where the shows air here in U.S.
  • Shows from overseas like Downton Abbey & Sherlock that air on PBS in the U.S. are not in the list below (PBS is not a cable network), though ITV has renewed Downton Abbey for a 4th season in the UK which will ultimately aire in the states.
  • Despite some current inconsistencies in the table below, I do not intend to track episode orders or return dates specifically in this table at this time. The primary goal of the table is: what's been renewed, what's been canceled, and what shows fates haven't been decided yet.

@Jessica Re: Merlin. The showrunners and stars have said that this season was intended to wrap up all the storylines. Although the media is reporting this as a cancellation, it’s looking more like a voluntary ending. So it doesn’t matter what Syfy does with it at this point. That said, as long as they don’t kill everybody off there’s always a chance of a reunion movie or something down the line.

  • getmilk

Anyone know what’s happening to The LA Complex?? I know it’s done pretty bad in the US and Canada, but it was announced that the show will be airing overseas…

  • Ekras

Why would they bother with a press release about Alphas? Almost no one watches it and they killed off the entire cast in the season finale……

  • omabin

Do you know when we would typically learn about Alphas? That is one that really interests me. Apart from that one, my cable shows are safe:
    – Walking Dead is obvious
    – Showtime got it covered with Dexter and homeland
    – american horror story is renewed
    – suits is renewed
    – white collar and covert affairs are renewed
    – true blood is renewed
    – falling skies is renewed

So yeah it is only alphas missing for me

  • Concerned Citizen

I think there’s gotta be some amount of analysis to make this list worth reading. Obviously, it would have to be somewhat different from the broadcast network lists, since cable channels have different standards. But there’s gotta be something beyond the simple information.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to The Hour coming back on Wednesday. That was an interesting period drama; not a first tier show, but definitely second tier. Plus, it’s always nice to see Dominic West (and any actors from The Wire, really) getting some good work.

  • Rashad

Alphas star Ryan Cartwright said on his Twitter that a decision on Alphas will come sometime in December.

  • ClamCam

I think that even if there’s no reliable system to predict cancel/renewal on cable it will be cool if you guys just take a chance, based on your knowledge and expertise…For example, for me it will be cool if you can “predict” or at least “suppose” if netflix and amc will produce the 3rd season of the killing, or, back in the day, assuming the 3rd season renewal of Wilfred!!

  • Robert Seidman

@ClamCam: it is not an issue of being unwilling to take a chance,it is an issue of too many cases where despite having access to ratings data, we have no idea of a show’s prospects and don’t have any basis for making *informed* guesses.

Wild-ass guessing/coin flipping/magic 8-ball prognosticating isn’t very interesting to me, though I can see maybe doing it anyway some slow summer day.

  • Richard Steven Hack

The notion that the entire Alphas cast except Gary was killed off in the finale is just ridiculous. Of course, they aren’t dead. That’s what writers are for… :-)

It’s not like Blake’s Seven – where everyone was gunned down – and there is STILL speculation that Avon might have survived since we never saw him die. :-)

Not to mention that there’s no explanation for why Gary survived…

  • Doug

On network TV, we know the the networks have a certain number of hours to fill in primetime, which is why marginal shows are sometimes flipped to likely renew status. For example, Castle. It will probably be renewed because ABC has enough other troubles to worry about, even though ratings are bubble-ish.

Cable doesn’t have to fill a certain number of hours in primetime. If ratings alone were a deciding factor, Breaking Bad would have not made it past its first season. ABC, for example, would have wanted to free the timeslot up for something better performing.

  • Kara

Since you have for some other shows, I think you should note for “Leverage” and Doctor Who that they are also mid-season and about to come off hiatus and continue airing their current season.

  • Scott

so TNT just playing the waiting game on leverage or is this the last season. I mean it was renewed before its winter return each of the last couple of seasons.

  • RS

I like Charlie Brown. Like it much better than Alphas. I never said anything before, because no one ever attacked Charlie B. or Revolution as you did, but here it goes. Alphas is your zenith? Not so much. I watched the first episode. New science fiction – YES. I cut my teeth on the holy trinity of Heinlein-Asimov-Simak. Ok, the character used her super powers and her sex appeal to get out of a traffic ticket. (XX chromosome folks reach for the remote – but we hang on hoping for better.) OK, nobody female over 40 or anything more than a male fantasy. (XX checks out; cf Being Human) It’s a male tale (my answer to the chick flick) – an homage to the teen-aged trope – sexy females and no women over 40 to remind you of your mother. That’s cool, RSH. You all deserve a show. And it is getting the ratings that it is getting.

  • Ekras

@RS – The crazy thing is the first episode was the best in the series…. I watched it only because I had some time with nothing else to watch and it just gets worse and worse every episode. The end of the first season had a cliffhanger where it looked like they were actually going to do something crazy for the second season (Spoiler alert) which is to tell the world people with super-powers existed- I actually looked forward a bit to see how they would resolve that, but then it was just forgotten about by the second episode of the season. I think the same people who are coming up with their story ideas are the ones to think up “Shark VS Octopus VS Giant Snake” movies and think that they are entertaining their base. Syfy really has been going downhill over the last few years, and that’s why Alphas had no ratings. Even their “hits” aren’t holding a candle to other genre television because everything is low-budget, and no one working at the network seems to be able to come up with original and thought-provoking content.

I don’t care about the fact that their aren’t older women in the show, and that it’s geared entirely toward a male audience to be frank (we are the target audience after all), but compare this with even the other low-budget shows (W13, Eureka, etc.) where they showed they could at least do an adequate job with a low budget…. it’s just really pathetic how poor a job they have done with the show….poor character design, poor storytelling, poor acting (except for the memory loss girl)…. I just don’t see why any executive would renew it, knowing it’s going to take a major hit next season after this one, and after how they screwed up the last season finale/opener— Especially since this season finale served as a good series finale.

  • Kay Roache

Wedding Band should be renewed. TBS has done everything in its power to try and sink it, but its so funny, different, and critically acclaimed. Step up TBS.

  • coolioni

Alphas should get cancelled. SyFy must be loosing money on it with its dismal season 2 ratings!
Also what about “TOrchwood” on Starz ? They never have said anything about a cancallation or renewal as far as I know.
