Deadline reports that the fifth season of Merlin will be its last. It will conclude its British run on BBC1 this Christmas with an episode that concludes the battle for Camelot. Shinw TV, the studios which produces the series, is considering developing possible spin-offs, though the showrunners Johnny Caps and Julian Murphy are leaving Shine to start their own production company. The final season of Merlin will debut in the United States on Syfy on January 4, 2013.

WHAT?! They can’t cancel this! This is like the best series ever, and they can’t bring all these episodes to an ending like that.

This is the biggest kick in the pants since Bing Crosby danced with…..

I sense greed and a power struggle from the show’s producer and executive team given they are going out on their own next year. Neither one would probably budge in leaving the program behind or letting it go so why not kill it.

There is a significant amount of legend that could be told from the point they’ve reached as Merlin hasn’t even been made known to have magic even now in the episodes already aired by the BBC.

Maybe the only good thing that could come out of this would be a renewal of Alphas.

Sad really that the executives couldn’t come to an agreement so the show could stay on the air.We only got 13 episodes per season so 5 seasons were more like 2.5 …I will really miss this show gave me something to watch on Saturdays instead of crap reality tv..

A shame that this series has been brought to an end. My kids and I enjoy watching this together and I disagree with he creator’s about it reaching it’s apex. This show was only limited by their imagination with the epic battles they could have gone with. Hopefully there will be a spinoff as mentioned would have really like to have seen a trilogy also but the creators decided to end it. My guess is they want to use this as a catalyst to launch something new using Merlin as an example of their work and I somehow doubt anything else they come up with will be nearly as good.
