With nine weeks of the season behind us, I've seen enough of the ratings for The Neighbors, Nashville and Scandal to move them into the "likely renewed" category. As always, future ratings changes can mean prediction changes, stay tuned.

Happy Endings' woeful ratings this season has me close to breaking my own rules about third season shows and moving its current prediction to "likely canceled". It's in a third season that would normally have me keep it as a "toss up" since the syndication gods (and a crazy deal making producer, Sony) have shown an ability to keep even terribly rated sitcoms alive. If I downgrade it in the future, I'll call a technicality in that it won't have the "typical" 66 episodes at the end of its third season.

Last Man Standing and Malibu Country held steady last Friday with 1.4 ratings for both. They've in the "toss up" range for cancellation or renewal by the end of the season. And if their ratings are not done falling, that prognosis may change again very soon.

Sophomore sitcom Don't Trust The B---- In Apt. 23 didn't start well this season, and its ratings completely tanked in its later episodes. It's now certain to be canceled.

The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I think dancing with the stars should get cancelled i dont see what people see in it.

I’ll go one step further the audience that watch The Middle and The Neighbor do not watch Happy Ending and Apt 23. I can’t speak for Apt 23 but Happy Ending has some of the most irriating characters to appear in a comedy series.

  • SF

AWESOME for Scandal! Another Excellent Shonda Rhimes creation!!

  • Chris

I think people just can’t stand the fact that when families watch tv they don’t want adult humor. They want clean humor and ABC Wednesdays and Fridays are just that. I don’t why this is so hard to understand for some people. The Neighbors,LMS, and MC are clean and Happy Endings and Apt.23 are not.

  • Chris

It may be hard to accept that but it shouldn’t be hard to undertsnad that. However, what I don’t understand is where are the people that watch and enjoy shows like Community, Arrested Development, Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Parks and Rec. Those are the people that would probably enjoy Happy Endings and Apt.23. Perhaps word of mouth to those people would help.

  • SarahL

What is up with no The Neighbors tonight?

There is absolutely nothing “clean” about the humor on The Neighbors. It is actually has a raunchy stinging humor with at least on “dick” joke per episode. Maybe is all the golf clothes that fools people. However, I find the show to be very funny and quite sweet. It is about loving your family and friends despite their quirkiness.

  • Nick

    Wow, a lot of responses.

The schedule is a little radical; I don’t think ABC will rearrange everything that drastically.

I never predicted what ABC would do. I said what I think they should do.

I doubt Scandal will be back in as a Midseason

I don’t think Scandal will be back in midseason, but it is not strong enough to warrant a spot in the fall.

I don’t see the Neighbors getting shipped to the Disney Channel. It would be canceled before then or go to ABC Family but even that is a long shot

It’s not a long shot. ABC is Disney-owned and The Neighbors is a far better fit for Disney than ABC or ABC Family.

Body of Proof is possibly done after this mid season; I don’t see it back in the Fall.

I think the syndication gods are more powerful then even Bill & Robert think. Their reach may extend to 2 seasons, especially for procedurals. (Case in point: The Good Wife)

Monday nights with LMS and MC? Both are doing okay in the time slot on Friday. They will stay there, LMS won’t last on any day but Friday right about now.

Yes, but I think ABC should try to build up their family multi-cam block. They do surprisingly well in syndication, going as far back as The Brady Bunch. Friday just isn’t the night for that. ABC doesn’t want to disturb Shark Tank. Also, there are no competing comedy blocks on Mondays except for CBS, which is a completely opposite type of comedy and isn’t doing as well as it used to.

  • Nick

Lol, that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen.

You should see what they have on the air now.

  • rob60990

“happy endings and Apt23 had a terrible lead in, with a terrible demo! smh, EFF ABC”

Yea, they didn’t get propped up enough for the year both airing after MF. (eye roll).

“I’ll go one step further the audience that watch The Middle and The Neighbor do not watch Happy Ending and Apt 23. I can’t speak for Apt 23 but Happy Ending has some of the most irriating characters to appear in a comedy series.”

Both of those turds would bleed worse out of The Middle than The Neighbors is doing right now.

  • Don

Nashville needs Cat Fights…LOTS OF THEM!!!

  • rob60990

“The Neighbors,LMS, and MC are clean”

I’ve seen enough of MC to know the show isn’t very family friendly. The Middle, Modern Family & Last Man Standing from what I have seen are. I would have assumed The Neighbors but not after what Melissa said.

  • rob60990

    I mean SarahL, not Melissa.

  • OERM

ABC is now the fourth network.

    1) Wednesday 9:30 slot, a lot of shows there: Cougar Town, Mr. Sunshine, Happy Endings, Don’t trust the B, and now Suburgatory. They need to let a show there and let it grow.
    2) Wednesday 10:00 slot, after a lot of time, Revenge works there, but they moved the show. Good for Revenge, bad for the timeslot.
    3) Thursday 8:00 slot, they didn’t try enough by moving an old show there. Only Wipeout and new shows.
    4) Thursday 10:00 slot, they had a medium but solid show, Prívate Practice was strong that Scandal in that place, I’m dure the show would have better demos there, they only need 7 episodes on Tuesday and Bang … Final Season. Scandal is a was there, should be moved soon.
    5) GCB should be renewed, aire would do better than the new show there.
    6) Reba’s New Comedy bad timeslot, should be on Wednesday.

I’m not. I’m just jumping straight to condemning them.

I am questioning the audience that watches “The Neighbors” and ignores “Happy Endings” and “Apt 23? -Jake C

    Reposted because WTF?

  • Gaius

how much will music sales factor into the future of Nashville? The songs do reasonably well on itunes. seen a few of them within the top 20 of the top 100 itunes chart. just wondering if that will play a role in renewal prospects

  • Moe

I like The Neighbors, so I’m glad to see it on the “likely renewal” side of the list! It’s a nice little show.

  • JC

I hope Scandal is renewed. Along with the OUAT and Revenge, it’s the only other show I watch on ABC. Not sure why it gets so much hate (Max aside), because it’s actually a really good show and people should give it a chance.

  • Joe

I think ABC will move Happy Endings (and likely Apartment 23) to a safer timeslot in the spring to protect it. If it still tanks, they’ll probably cancel it or ship it off to a cable network. But if it can a 1.5+ in its new slot, I think they’ll keep it around.

  • joel

HE & 23 would fit in nicely Fridays at 9pm for burn off.
