What is it in the water at the Two and a Half Men set that makes its actors bite the hands that pay them millions of dollars a year?

While it's amusing to see yet another highly paid actor misplace his marbles, it's probably irrelevant to the future of the show. TAAHM is CBS' #2 rated show this season, and they'll pull out all the stops to keep it on the air, that's why it will remain "certain to be renewed". As always, my predictions do not attempt to take into account the showrunner or producer deciding "to heck with these whackjob actors, I'm done!"  and walk away from his own pile of money. Insistent commenters are free to do so, of course.

CBS has debuted three new dramas every Fall since 2006-7. I'd expect them to do the same next Fall. So unless they have some schedule wizardry up their sleeves I haven't seen before (holding back Undercover Boss won't help!) they'll need to cancel three of their Fall 2012 dramas to make room for three more next Fall. With Made In Jersey gone, and Vegas a likely cancellation, that means one more Fall drama must go. It's virtually certain that CBS will cancel one of CSI:NYThe Good Wife, or The Mentalist.  And if spring drama Golden Boy is renewed, two from that list will need to be canceled.

Why are Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods "certain to be renewed"? Both dramas are in their third seasons and need a fourth to reach the "magic" 88 episodes for stripped syndication. Both are "certain to be renewed" for their fourth seasons next year. Read more about that here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

you know your 19 , you’ve been doing it half your life. you would make those comments too. he may have a problem with the tone of the show but maybe he likes the people he works with.

also i’m thinking if something does go south with the good wife that survivor takes the 9 pm slot. it takes sundays twice a year anyway.

“The Good Wife will never be cancelled by CBS.”

    Trolling?

Of course it will be canceled, it’s only a matter of when.

With Partners bombing, 2.5 man is coming back.
CBS will cancel The Mentalist , Vegas and CSI NY.
Tuesday 10 pm will be for the NCIS LA spin off :)
Hawaii will be send to die on Sundays and CBS will air a new drama on Mondays.
And another new show for Fridays.
Of course CBS still has a midseason drama to premiere.

Does our own Cancellation Bear love to feast on actors throwing out strange rants??

Is there any chance to the idea that one of (or even both) Hawaii-Five-0/Blue Bloods wait a full year, or at least until one of the “3 new Freshmen shows” gets cancelled?

If they don’t plan on making a 5th season of either of them then 4 months to a yr off shouldn’t hurt the ratings too much.

Otherwise, 2014-2015 they already know they have two holes to fill & if their freshman shows don’t do well, including “Elementary Season 2″, & “Golden Boy” & the 3 2013-2014 new shows, come 2014-2015 they will have more than 3 holes to fill.

Why not keep CSI:NY, The Good Wife, & The Mentalist around for 1 or 2 more years as solid enough backup? I know they aren’t even 70% of CBS ratings but not to make an excuse but part of that is b/c they have 3 of the worst time slots. They still get solid numbers “compared to other networks”.

If you are the “Yankees” you don’t get rid of players that aren’t performing @ their best but still are top tier @ their respective positions. You never know what you will get by a bunch of rookies. If you get too many rookies esp if you already plan on retiring some of your 40yr old veterans soon, you could easily find yourself vulnerable & then start missing the postseason.

So, again, it might be wise for CBS to stagger it’s 2 known 4th (& final) season shows over 1 time slot instead of getting rid of 1 of CSI:NY,TGW,TM & then risking weakening their whole lineup if coming freshmen shows don’t do well. So far, they have only launched successful shows of the 3 they premiered, if they do as predicted & let Vegas go.

I think it is more apt to ask why Chuck Lorre keeps hiring people he can’t seem to get along with in the long run.

OK, I will put a time period on it. The Good Wife has two more years.

Interesting. Grace Under Fire predates my need to have known what was going on in TV.

Even if it is Lorre, I can’t fault the guy, that even if “hate-able” he kept people onboard for as long as he did.

Heh, heh, producers are supposed to a-holes. It’s in the job description. :-) And I imagine controlling actors is like herding cats. :-)

any thoughts on where H50 will move to next year? Would they really keep it on Mondays with its numbers?

  • Just Desserts

As long as The Good Wife gets nominated for (and wins) awards, CBS isn;t gonna cancel. It’s probably getting a graceful exit next year with a guaranteed final season.

The toss-up is between CSI:NY and The Mentalist. I’m not even gonna try which (probably both) considering what happened to CSI:Miami last year.

  • Fake Me Out

    IMHO

All jokes aside, it may be a more serious for Angus than some mere ‘finding your path’ mis-steps if some background on his new spiritual guru is true … ie Jay-Z is a masonic tool for Satan, the Sandy caused gas crisis in NYC may lead to a food crisis that may lead to mothers eating their children, Obama = H****r … if any of this is true then perhaps the network, his co-stars, family and friends need to rescue him from the hands of a very dangerous person feeding off his fame and fortune before something truly sad/bad happens … nip this one in the bud. This is the downside to religious freedom I guess … any looney tune can dress up their insane ramblings as ‘messages from god’ and get away with it … at least in the States … Canada? not so much. Anyways, here’s hoping Angus can be rescued from the true filth he seems to be embracing.

    ymmv

We keep on being told that religion, whatever its imperfections, at least instills morality. On every side, there is conclusive evidence that the contrary is the case and that faith causes people to be more mean, more selfish, and perhaps above all, more stupid.” — Christopher Hitchens (1949-2011)

CBS should premiere only two new dramas and one new comedy next Fall. (I have no idea if CBS had done this before.) I think it’s worth trying. It would be wise to give all the promotion to two new dramas than wasting some on a third drama which would be a certain trainwreck (Made in Jersey, A Gifter Man, The Defenders etc.). For midseason, I suggest one new drama and one new comedy just in case a bubble show or a new show flops. Also, it seems like a waste that every year a veteran drama is going to get cancelled just because it’s on a troubled time slot and would be replaced by an almost the same new show that would do worse in the ratings. Why not just cancel all new shows that performs badly? I’m not suggesting CBS should do it now, though.

Two and a Half Man is not going anywhere. It survived without Charlie Sheen, its biggest star. So there is no point in cancelling it now. The ratings are still great. Maybe hire another young actor if Angus Jones decided to quit. Or maybe tptb can consider adding Miley Cyrus to the cast.

I suggest CBS should do like this next Fall:

    Tuesday
    8pm NCIS
    9pm NCIS: LA
    10pm new drama

    Wednesday
    8pm Survivor
    9pm Criminal Minds
    10pm new drama

    Friday
    8pm Blue Bloods
    9pm CSI
    10pm CSI: NY

Monday, Thursday and Sunday stay the same.

Also after the Super Bowl, I think it would be pretty clever if CBS tweaks its Thursday line-up like this:
    8pm The Big Bang Theory
8:30pm Two and a Half Men
    9pm Elementary
    10pm Person of Interest

    @Tom

Angus was 10 years old when he was cast as Jake. And I’m sure Lorre doesn’t have a crystal ball to know what kind of adults kids will become.

As for Charlie Sheen, while his hard-partying ways were well known, he definitely had some kind of mental meltdown.

Angus should just be written out as quickly as possible. Jake is superfluous to the show at this point anyway. I know I won’t miss him.

  • Nate

TGW isn’t going anywhere. I know the ratings aren’t the strongest but CBS will renew it for atleast another season. There’s no doubt in my mind.
