What is it in the water at the Two and a Half Men set that makes its actors bite the hands that pay them millions of dollars a year?

While it's amusing to see yet another highly paid actor misplace his marbles, it's probably irrelevant to the future of the show. TAAHM is CBS' #2 rated show this season, and they'll pull out all the stops to keep it on the air, that's why it will remain "certain to be renewed". As always, my predictions do not attempt to take into account the showrunner or producer deciding "to heck with these whackjob actors, I'm done!"  and walk away from his own pile of money. Insistent commenters are free to do so, of course.

CBS has debuted three new dramas every Fall since 2006-7. I'd expect them to do the same next Fall. So unless they have some schedule wizardry up their sleeves I haven't seen before (holding back Undercover Boss won't help!) they'll need to cancel three of their Fall 2012 dramas to make room for three more next Fall. With Made In Jersey gone, and Vegas a likely cancellation, that means one more Fall drama must go. It's virtually certain that CBS will cancel one of CSI:NYThe Good Wife, or The Mentalist.  And if spring drama Golden Boy is renewed, two from that list will need to be canceled.

Why are Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods "certain to be renewed"? Both dramas are in their third seasons and need a fourth to reach the "magic" 88 episodes for stripped syndication. Both are "certain to be renewed" for their fourth seasons next year. Read more about that here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Brit
He seems to be getting a lot of flack because he’s following some guru, I guess? Americans are leary of cults. I didn’t know much about it before reading here, but at first glance (without knowing anything else) I thought, cool, the kid thinks the show is filth just like I do, lol. Back when I watched the show, though (a long time ago, and maybe a few episodes with Kutcher), I liked Jake and the housekeeper the best. But good luck to him….hope he saved up some money.

  • Mr Mumble

From reading this interwebby page I’ve learnt:

    1. Bill Gorman is still fluffing up his portfolio for a Gawker job interview.

    2. An actor in Hollywood has a slightly less crazy preacher than the POTUS did for 20+ years.

Jones has hardly appeared in TaaHM this season (yes, I do watch, no, I don’t know why). Jones can easily be replaced with, say, the son of the English girlfriend. Unless Cryer or Kutcher quit the show doesn’t have a chance of ending and even then its just a possibility.

HIMYM has far more of a chance of ending because there are five key actors and most of them have the potential of getting a larger payday elsewhere.

    @ Bill :
Many shows Chuck Lorre worked on had problems with their lead actors:
Roseanne (& Tom Arnold), Grace (Brett Butller), Cybill (Shepherd) & 2.5 Men.
Though it does not look like his fault in all of the cases.

Brett Buttler now has a reocurring role on Anger Managenemt, I wonder why? :)

    @ Brit :
Angus T. Jones is free to say what he wants, but does not mean it is free of or safe from critique.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“Why is Angus considered a “whack job actor” for expressing his religious beliefs! I thought this was America, where people are supposedly free to express their beliefs.”

If you’re referring to what I wrote, it has *nothing* to do with the religious nature of his rant. Simply that the show that’s paid him millions and millions of dollars is suddenly so distasteful.

I’m sure Angus will still be cashing his checks, and I don’t expect him to be returning any of his millions.

  • joel

Angus is so insignificant to the show now anyway and he looks so different from what he looked like as a kid that they could easily pull a Derwood on him, and most people (like me) would nary bat an eye.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“1. Bill Gorman is still fluffing up his portfolio for a Gawker job interview.”

I stopped working for others 14 years ago (almost to the day). Are you still a W-2 wage slave, Mumble?

Now, if Nick Denton would like to *buy* our site, I’m all ears.

Until such time, I can only hope to taunt crazy fans in ways that are but a pale shadow compared to most of what his sites can do.

  • NCJeff

Maybe Chevy Chase can join the cast of Two and a Half Men as a long lost older brother.

  • LCT

Does anyone know if CBS has a syndication deal for The Good Wife? If so, they’ll keep it for another season to reach the magic 88 episodes. That’s what they’re doing for H50, no matter how bad it is.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“Does anyone know if CBS has a syndication deal for The Good Wife?”

    None has been announced.

“If so, they’ll keep it for another season to reach the magic 88 episodes. That’s what they’re doing for H50, no matter how bad it is.”

Your counting is off. The Good Wife will reach 88 episodes at the end of THIS season. H50 won’t be at 88 episodes until the end of NEXT season.

  • Honey Badger

I feel sorry for Angus T. Jones, who plays the role of Jake Harper in the hit CBS sitcom, Two and a Half Men.
He is just a teenager. Teenagers do these things, it is called growing up.

People are bashing him for expressing his opinions. He is only trying to find himself, and I hope he finds a good life. He has already apologized for his video and stated he loves the people on the show. He said “”I apologize if my remarks reflect me showing indifference to and disrespect of my colleagues and a lack of appreciation of the extraordinary opportunity of which I have been blessed. I never intended that.”

He is only 19 and has been on the show since 2003. And we have all seen how many child stars in Hollywood have turned out.
The show is cursed according to Charlie Sheen.
And as daniel c Posted “Many shows Chuck Lorre worked on had problems with their lead actors:
Roseanne (& Tom Arnold), Grace (Brett Butller), Cybill (Shepherd) & 2.5 Men.
Though it does not look like his fault in all of the cases.
Brett Buttler now has a reocurring role on Anger Managenemt, I wonder why

So let’s all hope Angus T. Jones finds a nice life.
    Peace to All

  • Honey Badger

If CBS wanted the ratings for CBS sitcom, Two and a Half Men to go through the roof, they would have added Miley Cyrus to the cast and had her be the girlfriend of Angus T. Jones. They could be the featured characters on the show, and the show would be a hit for years to come.
When Miley Cyrus appeared last time the ratings to a dramatic leap.
The show has been going downhill since Charlie Sheen left and Ashton Kutcher replaced him. Jon Cryer has not been funny for some time, his role is just the same thing over and over.

  • The Original J

“While it’s amusing to see yet another highly paid actor misplace his marbles, it’s probably irrelevant to the future of the show.”

Bravo, Bill. A young man is going through a serious change in his life that has caused him to re-evaluate his priorities, and by speaking up for his new beliefs, you mock him and dismiss his comments as misplacing his marbles. Please, continue the mean-spirited streak you’ve put on display time and time again.

  • Honey Badger

An insider believes that neither Kutcher, Cryer and series co-creator Chuck Lorre aren’t especially enamored with the idea of continuing the show… the talent would prefer that the show end after the 10th season.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“Bravo, Bill. Save me from the “young man is going through a serious change” excuses. The guy gets paid a lottery winner sum of $6+ million a year, and has the balls to trash the folks that write those checks in as public a way as is humanly possible.

He could “go through a serious change” in private and then simply announce at the end of the season that he wouldn’t continue on the show.

By posting his little diatribe on YouTube he *invited* the scrutiny and whatever comes with it.

  • bluejays

I totally agree with Bill on this one. The guy is publicly biting the hand that feeds him but still taking the food from that hand. its not exactly an edifying sight!

  • Incognito

I think Two and A Half is filth too. Not due to Deity worship though, just because it’s just not funny and hate the writing.

  • Incognito

Yeah, also the kid is a idiot. There are plenty of religious actors who take roles outside their religious faiths.
It’s called “acting” for a reason.
This idea that somehow shows or other creative mediums, that don’t fit into his moral and dogmatic codes somehow corrupt and ruin the masses is just stupid.
Six million dollars a year and he complains? It’s not like the writers of Two and A Half Men, are running human experiments and developing a virus to kill the masses.
This kid is either stupid or can’t seem to find the right medication to take. Or both ;)

  • David Howell

It’s pretty amusing to think that one of only about five scripted shows in all of network television whose 18-49 numbers wouldn’t have been cancel-worthy a decade ago might end up imploding anyway.

Hey, at least 2AAHM is providing Bill an opportunity to change the headline from Mentalist/TGW/CSI NY. I reckon two of those will go even if (when?) Golden Boy becomes the next NYC 22/Miami Medical. Which two would depend entirely on the syndication economics, certainly in the case of CSI NY (which to all intents and purposes is now a show for international export that happens to be filling a Friday night death slot for CBS). As far as I’m concerned, our predictions for those three will be no clearer in May than they are now.

Bill, I totally agree that CBS will definitely cancel at least three fall dramas. How likely is it that they cancel more?

  • SarahK123

I wonder what it is like behind the scenes on this show, first with Charlie’s meltdown, then Kutcher joining and now Angus’ ‘moment’ – do Conchata Ferrell and Holland Taylor just look at each other and think, what the f—?!

Is he due to be in the next taped episode?

  • DSS

So it’s 88 episodes for syndication now instead of 100? What caused that change? Just curious…
