What is it in the water at the Two and a Half Men set that makes its actors bite the hands that pay them millions of dollars a year?

While it's amusing to see yet another highly paid actor misplace his marbles, it's probably irrelevant to the future of the show. TAAHM is CBS' #2 rated show this season, and they'll pull out all the stops to keep it on the air, that's why it will remain "certain to be renewed". As always, my predictions do not attempt to take into account the showrunner or producer deciding "to heck with these whackjob actors, I'm done!"  and walk away from his own pile of money. Insistent commenters are free to do so, of course.

CBS has debuted three new dramas every Fall since 2006-7. I'd expect them to do the same next Fall. So unless they have some schedule wizardry up their sleeves I haven't seen before (holding back Undercover Boss won't help!) they'll need to cancel three of their Fall 2012 dramas to make room for three more next Fall. With Made In Jersey gone, and Vegas a likely cancellation, that means one more Fall drama must go. It's virtually certain that CBS will cancel one of CSI:NYThe Good Wife, or The Mentalist.  And if spring drama Golden Boy is renewed, two from that list will need to be canceled.

Why are Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods "certain to be renewed"? Both dramas are in their third seasons and need a fourth to reach the "magic" 88 episodes for stripped syndication. Both are "certain to be renewed" for their fourth seasons next year. Read more about that here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@David Howell: I guess you overestimate CBS’s faith in its own ability to develop successful dramas. MIJ is done, Vegas will be gone eventually. Elementary will probably stick around as the only new drama to make it out the first season.

Last year, CBS had to be quite kind to not cancel two of its three new dramas and gave Unforgettable a second chance in spite of its pretty poor ratings.

If two dramas out of TGW/TM/CSI: NY were canceled, CBS would have four hours to fill come next season. And that doesn’t even include their comedy line-up. Partners has already been canceled while both HIMYM and TAAHM are uncertain to continue due to the actors’ expiring contracts. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if TAAHM continued, however, HIMYM’s future seems like a 50/50 situation at this point.

In addition to all of that, CBS basically has two nights (Friday and Sunday) where premiering new shows doesn’t make a whole lot of sense anymore. Sunday hasn’t seen a new show in years and all the recent Friday experiments failed. That leads to one important question: Which established shows would CBS want to move to either Friday or Sunday and see them die an inevitable death with the exception of perhaps H5O?

  • The End

Two and a Half Men isn’t doomed though, those who think otherwise are talking out their rear end and have no idea what they’re talking about even.

Religion is a bad excuse to want out of any show really, people would be surprised how many people are playing roles that commit ‘sins’ according to the bible and are religious in real life. It’s just a job. Playing someone who kills someone on a TV show or a movie doesn’t make you in any way a sinner, nor would playing someone with questionable morals.

    We’l see a Season 11, no question.

  • The End

    @johndbshanny

You’d be surprised what some websites make up(More like pull out their rear end) to have a story(Get hits).

Rainn Wilson parodies Angus T. Jones by begging fans to not watch ‘The Office’
    http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/11/rainn-wilson-parodies-angus-t-jones-by-begging-fans-to-not-watch-the-office.html

The difference is Two and a Half Men has viewers.
Rainn Wilson doesn’t have to beg fans to not watch ‘The Office’, nobody is watching now.
So Rainn Wilson joke is an epic fail.
No wonder no one watches The Office, NBC cannot be happy. I think this will cost him his spinoff show.

For the comedy situation, I think it will be an either-or with Mother and Men. Even though Men has the biggest ratings, I say CBS sticks with Mother because it is way easier to launch something out of big bang on thursday than it is to find a lead-out for an already out-of shape Monday block. Partners is done, i dont see rules on the fall schedule after having all the episodes it needs and friend me is probably a flop waiting to happen. Meaning CBS will already have a new comedy on monday next year. Will they really go with 2 new comedies on the night + mike and molly (which has been perfoming way better than expected but is still not a powerhous) + 2 broke girls (which still needs more help to be the hit they want it to be)? I suppose they could move men back to monday but that would require more promotion and moving thing around is never something cbs appreciates, i dont see them going for it. Scheduling wise, saving mother just makes much more sense than saving men.

  • omabin

@CBS Viewer, I agree with your schedule, but:

    a) I would put good wife on fridays at 8 instead of launching a new show there
    b) i think a case could be make for swapping elementary and five-0 in that schedule since both would be moving anyway. Hawaii is clearly more compaible with the NCISs (it’s likely that the third NCIS takes the tuesdays at 8 spot) and elementary would be a good fit with the mentalist. Although moving elementary to sunday after just one season would be risky
    c) as explained in my post above, i think men can die this year, so a new comedy would be launched after big bang.

Apart from this, i agree with you in everything

NO BILL! Don’t let Denton buy this site, Kinja (their awful commenting system) would ruin it! Noooooooooooooo!

Angus became a Christian he said. And it’s his right to feel how he wants. I mean the show is all about sex. Someone called it 2.5 sluts.
I like the show not near as well as BBT but it’s funny. If he feels he has to leave he can.

How i met your mother is a major issue for next year.It s going to be very hard to convince the entire cast to return. jason segal has already said he has no desire to come back in an interview. Two and a half men future s depends on A Kutcher decision to continue or not like this May.On the drama side on ncis mark harmon contract s ends after season 10 , the same with cote de pablo and gary glasberg the showrunner.Cbs also has to renegociate contracts for many characters on Criminal Minds. It s going to be a very interesting spring for them

  • Petar Ivanov

    @ omabin

CBS try enough with launching new comedy after TBBT. And failed with ALL OF THEM. TAHM at least is holding big demo. Thursday is best CBS day(beating even monday) and if CBS can get one moe season from TAHM they will get it or they will move HIMYM at this place. New comedy after TBBT just won’t work……..remmember Rob or how to be a gentelmen.

Interesting point. Thanks. By the way CBS for first time from years don’t say wich show will get full season etc. Its really late yet. Not even talk about renewel or something. Is this mean mess ahead for CBS. I mean the yare very concervetive and almost never make changes with YEARS. I mean tuesday at 10 new drama. Monday at 8:30 new comedy friday at 9 new drama etc. And this is from years.

  • ToXiX

Two And A Half Men will be back next season.

  • Conspiracy Brother

Vegas is such a great show. The acting, scripting and chemistry between the characters has really become infectious. Let’s hope they give it more rope before they hang it. It might rebound on the second half of the season like Person of Interest did during its first season.

Some of these shows could be really successful in different formats or regions. Its a real shame high quality shows get the axe because networks give up on them. It’s somewhat depressing that any generic sitcom, American Idol, Survivor, and DWTS can stay on TV but a decent scripted show cant.

For instance Pan Am is HUGE in Europe but had low ratings here. Maybe its a cultural difference that explains how shows like that can find an audience overseas but not in America. Then again, now that I think about it if CBS or NBC had produced Doctor Who, it would have been cut by the 5th episode after being pushed to Friday and put on hiatus for 4 months after the second episode.

  • groove365

Angus is barely on the show at this point, he must have realized (from his agent or something) how easy he could be written out and a new half man could be found.

How hard would it to be to write in Charlie having a 10-12 year old son he never told anyone about about show up for Alan to have to raise?

    Conspiracy Brother:
Any source for Pan Am being HUGE in Europe?

I figure that they’ll need to expand their comedy hours with HIMYM and 2.5 Men ending soon. They can timeshare another new drama too if one of the new dramas doesn’t do well. This schedule makes the most sense IMO.

  • Ryan Schwartz

Next season will likely be the last for HIMYM and 2.5 Men. Given how poor of a fall season everyone’s having, CBS can’t afford to lose these flagship series.

Next season, they need to figure out how to make Mike and Molly work Mondays at 8. They can place a returning comedy at 8:30 (if they’re smart, a full season of the reliable RULES OF ENGAGEMENT), and a new comedy behind 2 Broke Girls at 9:30. They also have to place another established show on Mondays at 10 and slide Hawaii Five-O to a lesser profile time slot, or maybe, they can use it to fill their Tuesday at 10 hole. Slide HIMYM to Thursdays at 8:30 behind TBBT, and 2.5 Men to 9. Promote the hell out of their final seasons, and use that to help launch a new comedy Thursdays at 9:30. Persons of Interest to Mondays at 10, and Elementary stays put on Thursdays.

Keep Fridays and Sundays as is, and worry about those nights once you have the future of your comedy slate figured out.

    Monday –
    8:00pm – Mike and Molly
    8:30pm – Rules of Engagement
    9:00pm – 2 Broke Girls
    9:30pm – NEW COMEDY
    10:00pm – Person of Interest

    Tuesday –
    8:00pm – NCIS
    9:00pm – NCIS: LA
    10:00pm – Hawaii Five-O

    Thursday –
8:00pm – The Big Bang Theory
8:30pm – How I Met Your Mother (final season)
9:00pm – Two and a Half Men (final season)
    9:30pm – NEW COMEDY
    10:00pm – Elementary
