11/28 Update: Emily Owens, MD has been canceled.
As many commenters have noted, the CW hasn't released its entire mid-season/spring schedule yet. One likely reason for that could be that it won't include Emily Owens, M.D. and networks typically want to put out bad news for shows that are still airing as late as possible. Emily Owens is certain to be canceled by the end of the season.

CW dramas The Beauty & The Beast,  Hart Of Dixie and 90210 are all still "toss ups" for cancellation or renewal by the end of the season. Unlikely those predictions change before the end of 2012.

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

  • ICBBsFuture

can someone please explain to me how syndication helps a show get renewed? way confused! thank you

  • Hadesa

even if HOD is renewed it should not be used a lead in for a anything, ratings may be steady but they’re also steadily low

  • Bern

Who the hell wants Nikita over the summer???
It’s going to do worse on the ratings. CW needs a interested action/spy show with great writers and paired it with Nikita next season.

  • JulieDawn

Beauty and the Beast has become my guilty pleasure, so I’ll be crossing fingers and toes and everything else from now until May that it’s renewed.

  • Allegra

BATB looks delicious for the Cancellation Bear! He is going to be so hungry when he wakes up in the spring! Can’t wait to watch that CRAP be devoured come next May!

  • Melanie

Other than SPN, Arrow, TVD and yes, Nikita being renewed — I don’t know what the CW will do.

HOD is steady, but the ratings are not great and to renew it for a third season is almost like saying yes to a fourth. But if Nikita’s ‘look away’ ratings are OK, why wouldn’t HOD’s be too? Its not the way to build the network year to year.

BATB — it will depend on the CW’s bench strength and how Cult & Carrie do. Its not doing great, if I had to pick, I’d guess it is cancelled.

90210 — I won’t be surprised if it gets a farewell season or if it doesn’t. Either way it will be done.

Poor Emily — we hardly knew ye.

    Emily Owens M.D

    Gossip Girl

I was reading that Mark P. is thinking about giving new serialized dramas shorter series orders because of what happened with Ringer. So if Reign or The Selection being serialized (*because they are similar tone wise in many ways CW will pick the pilot that is better) gets picked up it will get 90210’s monday slot midseason. The only way HOD survives another season is by being moved to fridays. I don’t think they will do too much shuffling of the schedule but IMO it’s looking like 1 Returning show and 1 Brand New show for each weekday so there is hopefully no holes or weak links monday-friday for the CW fall season.

  • Nerdbot

Nikita is too good for The CW. It is well written, the special effects look very real and the acting is very convincing. The thing is that it doesn’t match The CW’s target audience. So, people who watch that channel don’t like the show because it’s different to everything else on that network and people who don’t usually watch The CW are not interested in the show because they may think it’s similar to all that preppy crap with attractive people who can’t really act.

  • JJA

FYI–Arrow got a bonus episode, so the total will be 23 episodes.

Also, for this spring, the CW should try:

    Mon 8–Carrie Diaries (new)
    9–Hart of Dixie

    Tue 8–Beauty & The Beast

    Wed 8–Arrow

    Thu 8–Vampire Diaries
    9–Cult (new)

    Fri 8–ANTM
    9–90210 (to end in May)

  • Nick

    @Anthony C

    8PM- Hart Of Dixie
    9PM- Electropolis (New Series)

Seriously? You’d be hard-pressed to find 1 show under the sun that is a worse fit for Electropolis than Hart of Dixie. And on Fridays too?

  • robin

too good for the CW hmm thats a new one for the fan excuse bingo

  • Zach B.

Yeah, I put a super large comment that was so detailed and brilliant,
and the webpage said, “Invalid Data.”

Emily Owens, cancel, have CBS or NBC pick it up.
Any network but CW will be a success with that show.

    Happy Viewing?

  • Anthony C.

I’m not really baseing it on what fits Hart Of Dixie because really what show is gonna fit Hart Of Dixie unless it’s similar in tone and style.
BATB doesn’t fit TVD yet they scheduled it that way. Emily Owens M.D even though a medical show it still doesn’t fit HOD.

House Calls and Wrecking Ball are those type of shows and I don’t think the CW is gonna bank on those series at all. Not enough buzz from the scripts.
Also I think by not making fridays the dumping ground for failing series will help the CW. Besides where else is Electropolis gonna fit cause they are not gonna let a J.J Abrams show slip through their fingers for fall.

Electropolis: The one-hour drama from executive producers J.J Abrams and Bryan Burk and Writer Ken Olin, is described as an undercover cop show about after-hours Los Angeles and the young people who live their lives after most are asleep, making their moves to the pulsing beats of electronic music.

Margaret Cho was the first asian american to star in her own tv series…All American Girl.

Mr. Pat Morita was the first Asian-American to star in his own tv series ‘Mr. T. & Tina’, sadly never syndicated.

  • Anthony C.

I do remember that show, but we were talking about asian american females leading their own TV show.

Here’s a question – why does the CW program Friday (low “households using television”) but not Sunday (high “households using tv”)?

Is it simple counter programming (avoid Sunday night football but compete on Friday against mostly crap?).

You would think the HUT differential would regardless play to Sunday’s advantage.

(I think there may be an interesting post to be found in “day of the week ratings effects” – for days other than Fri/Sat.)
