11/28 Update: Emily Owens, MD has been canceled.
-
As many commenters have noted, the CW hasn't released its entire mid-season/spring schedule yet. One likely reason for that could be that it won't include Emily Owens, M.D. and networks typically want to put out bad news for shows that are still airing as late as possible. Emily Owens is certain to be canceled by the end of the season.

CW dramas The Beauty & The Beast,  Hart Of Dixie and 90210 are all still "toss ups" for cancellation or renewal by the end of the season. Unlikely those predictions change before the end of 2012.

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

The CW needs to become an all supernatural/fantasy/sci-fi network in the spirit of the old SciFi Channel since those are the only shows it’s even been able to have any luck with: Smallville, Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, Arrow. I don’t know why they refuse to see the obvious with this.

I’m certain The CW is still on the fence for some sort of back order on ‘Emily Owens, M.D.’, whether it might be three, five or nine episodes may be what’s holding things up. Last week, ‘Emily Owens, M.D.’ was the most-viewed of the six CW non-special series broadcast. Her W18-34 at 0.6 are just a smidgen behind ‘ANTM’ (0.7), ‘Gossip Girl’ (0.8) and ‘90210’ (0.8), and double that of ‘Nikita’ (0.3).

As to a second season renewal, I disagree with the doomsayers who write this series off, but would table an assessment that prospects are a long-shot unless the series improves its W18-34s to nearer the 1.0 that ‘Beauty & The Beast’ garners.

  • CoolRanchDoritos

Do they REALLY need all these new shows next year. How about no new shows at all & keep the shows they have now. I watch them all, except BATB.

I’d really hate too see Emily Owens go. I really enjoy having Justin back on my screen again.

    @CoolRanchDoritios

Justin Hartley just needs to return to Hart of Dixie as Jesse, Wade’s Brother and be promoted to series regular. Wes Brown’s Dr Judson Lyons also needs to return and be promoted to a series regular as well. Golden Brooks and Kaitlyn Black need to be promoted to series regulars as well to even out the female cast .It’s funny to watch Zoe squirm around all those hot guys.

  • CoolRanchDoritos

I forgot about him being on HoD. They brought back the ex wife, might as well bring back the brother too.

Wes Brown is over on 90210.

I don’t really care for Annabeth so Kaitlyn can stay as a guest star.

I’d love to see Golden become a regular.

“I’m certain The CW is still on the fence for some sort of back order on ‘Emily Owens, M.D.’, whether it might be three, five or nine episodes may be what’s holding things up. “

I don’t think more episodes as a schedule filler are out of the question, but the date, as they say, is getting very late for a positive decision.

“As to a second season renewal, I disagree with the doomsayers who write this series off, but would table an assessment that prospects are a long-shot unless the series improves its W18-34s to nearer the 1.0 that ‘Beauty & The Beast’ garners.”

Always the optimist, no matter how much reality is staring you in the face.

On a similar note, I have tabled my prospects of joining the PGA tour pending the long-shot improvement in my 25 handicap.

“Do they REALLY need all these new shows next year. How about no new shows at all & keep the shows they have now.”

So simple. Why didn’t they think of that already?

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“Here’s a question – why does the CW program Friday (low “households using television”) but not Sunday (high “households using tv”)?

Is it simple counter programming (avoid Sunday night football but compete on Friday against mostly crap?).

You would think the HUT differential would regardless play to Sunday’s advantage.

    Thoughts?

(I think there may be an interesting post to be found in “day of the week ratings effects” – for days other than Fri/Sat.)”

Unknown, perhaps just the tide of historical events.

CW tried sub-leasing Sunday night to a TV studio several years ago and when their shows bombed so terribly and were yanked they seemed to have no other option other than giving the night back to the affiliates to program.

I can imagine that once given a night back, those CW affiliates are loathe to give it up for the low rated shows the CW programs on most weekdays.

  • Kate

I don’t watch the show but I know some here do so I thought I’d share. Apparently the cast & crew of Emily Owens will find out tomorrow whether or not they get the back 9 order. Is one more week of ratings really going to change anything?

  • Alex

if emily owens is axed, that means cult has to take its slot.

    Bring back The LA Complex!!!

What channel would even want to buy Nikita?

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“What channel would even want to buy Nikita?”

A channel that could get it at the right price?

  • Melissa

    @Bill Gorman

A channel that could get it at the right price?

Does The CW really consider it worth it to keep that dreadfully rated show on for another season, just for a cheap syndication deal? I didn’t know syndication was that important, but I guess it is.

“Does The CW really consider it worth it to keep that dreadfully rated show on for another season, just for a cheap syndication deal? I didn’t know syndication was that important, but I guess it is.”

The CW is likely the cart being driven by its half owner Warner Brothers, that has now produced, likely at a loss, Nikita for 3 seasons and would like to have 88 episodes to sell and make some of that money back.

  • Nancy

CW needs to give Emily a chance. They premiered her with a bad lead as well as a horrible timeslot. Emily is such a sweet show and it brings back a good part of CW that doesn’t focus on rich spoiled teens. I hope CW is smart to see this jewel of a show and give it a chance to shine!

  • Tom

@ Bill Re: “The CW is likely the cart being driven by its half owner Warner Brothers,….”

Thanks for shedding some light on the possible machinations going on at the WB/CBS joint venture. What you’re saying seems plausible even though it implies that these characters would – for a few syndication bucks – continue to diminish the CW’s already depleted brand by broadcasting episodes of Nikita that are doa. i wouldn’t begrudge them doing this for maybe a few episodes, but watching them drag this farce out over two seasons is disgusting.

  • Moe

As long as Supernatural keeps doing good *knock on wood* and keeps up with those lovely green smilies, I’m good!

There’s something bizarre about believing that EO’s 0.3/0.4 rating is attributable to anything other than viewer disinterest. So, for the sake of preserving valuable bandwith, please stop playing Fan Excuse Bingo over it. EO is not going to be renewed. It will be cancelled. Relocating it in proximity to other low rated shows on the pathetic CW schedule won’t change that. Nobody’s watching those shows either and, if they were, they still wouldn’t be watching EO. Got that? And the quality of its competition on other networks is irrelevant. If EO were the only show on television, most viewers would turn off their sets. So, stop living in denial. EO is a goner and no one except its miniscule audience will miss it.
