The Simpsons already renewed 1.60

11/28 Update: The Mob Doctor has been canceled.
Ben & Kate's  prediction was changed to "certain to be canceled" last week, but Glee usurped the headline. Now it gets its rightful place.

Unless last week's rating was a complete fluke, The Mindy Project is going to drop to "likely canceled" next week. Stay tuned.

Two years ago when Fox's Lone Star, "Lone Star'd" its premiere rating (1.3) it was yanked after its second episode (which had a 1.0). This season, The Mob Doctor has been nearly as woeful and yet looks like it will air most or all of its 13 episode order before vanishing.

Raising Hope is predicted as "certain to be renewed" even with its somewhat weak early ratings. While the syndication gods ruling Fox aren't quite as predictable as those ruling CBS, it would take nothing short of a cataclysm to prevent the show from getting a fourth season. •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

At least Mob Doctor won’t be alone

can someone please tell me what is funny about Ben and Kate? i just don’t get it. Ive treid watching 4 episodes for various reasons and have not laughed once…at all

what do people find funny about this show? The main charachter Ben is just simply annoying and unfunny. the african amercian character exist to say “is it because Im black” like every episode..and the blonde friend is almost as annoying as ben. the only thing the show has going for it is kate is kinda cute. I just dont understand how anyone finds this funny..

They need to just flush this thing now.

  • LoriB196

FOX should just go ahead and renew Bones, Glee, Raising Hope and New Girl now and build everything else around it for next season.

FOX is doing poorly this season, ABC as well but at least they have hits like MF, Greys and OUAT. Fox is struggling to get 3s these days and even the once almighty Family Guy is slipping. But well at least they still have Idol to cushion the blow

Poor Fox has slipped all the way to 4th place overall this season to date. I’m sure their fortunes will improve once AI & The Following premieres in Jan. Not sure why they were so eager to give full season orders to their 2 new comedies B&K & TMP. I doubt Touch will do any better on Fri than what Fringe has been getting.

  • Bill Gorman

“Not sure why they were so eager to give full season orders to their 2 new comedies B&K & TMP. “

Because they have 15 hours a week of primetime to fill, and needed something to fill it with?

@richard hack…I’ve not missed an episode of Fringe and disagree with your assesment. I love the direction the show is going and it seems to be getting a fitting ending. Thank FOX for letting a classic show end on it’s own terms and give the viewers the ending that the developers intend regardless of how some fans may feel (the only thing fox has done right in a while.

  • KJ Styles

@Bill- It still doesn’t make sense, especially when you consider that Ben & Kate’s ratings have been awful, and The Mindy Project’s have been middling at best. That leaves virtually no room for The Goodwin Games, which I felt should have premiered over one of these first. I don’t know if it’s ratings would have been any better, but it looks like a more interesting show.

I think Ben & Kate is the best new sitcom of the season, and will be sorry to see it go. Dakota Johnson is gorgeous and the little redhead who plays her daughter is adorable. It has a tough timeslot. I think it would have done a lot better following New Girl, instead of preceding it.

  • Oliver

    @KJ Styles
On the contrary, I think it makes perfect sense: Fox clearly believe The Goodwin Games is bad, which is why they extended the order of the low-rated Ben and Kate and cut The Goodwin Games down to 7.

Fox needed to give at least one of B&K/Mindy a full-season order to fill their schedule because they had insufficient mid-season replacements. I expect them to develop more shows next season so they aren’t stuck in the same situation.

  • Concerned Citizen

Happy Raising Hope and New Girl are looking good. Like Ben and Kate as well, but I can live without it. Losing interest in The Mindy Project.

  • Bill Gorman

Goodwin Games order was reduced. The announcement is somewhere on our site.

We may find that there were problems with the show, or that once it was in production, somebody decided that it sucked.

  • Trice Crew

FOX needs to get back in the multi-cam game and find their next Married with Children. They’ve gotten progressively worst with their comedies. They need to move Glee back to Tuesdays ASAP.

The Mob Doctor actually has been showing some great growth lately. FOX might actually keep that one to see where it goes.

  • Oliver

In terms of Nielsen rankings, New Girl did better last season than Married With Children ever did. For some reason, people assume Married With Children was a much bigger hit than it actually was.

It’s not a surprise that Fox focused on shows compatible with New Girl after it looked like such a big hit last season, especially after I Hate My Teenage Daughter bombed.

I think Fox is in a tricky situation to launch multicams. Their existing comedies are single-camera and the network targets younger audience who seemingly prefer single-camera comedies, needing much more convincing to give multi-cams a go. Contrast that with CBS, who have a lineup of multicams and a core older and working-class audience that allows them to sustain ratings until they hit syndication and find younger viewers.

Fox have a script order from Dan Harmon, the creator of Community, for a multi-camera show. Perhaps that’s one way of attracting both the multi-cam and single-cam audience into a single viable show.

It depends on your sense of humor. The show overall is funny.

Notice how they talk and what they say.

The blonde friend, PG, is hilarious. See episode 4, the 21st birthday party, when she talks about how Ben is a circus.

If any thing, I find the actress who plays Kate to be the weakest link, but even she can be funny sometimes.

  • Brett

Ben and Kate meets the same fate as the rest of the really funny shows I’ve enjoyed: Breaking In, Better off Ted, Good Guys. Good casts. Great, smart writing. Victims of not having enough bawdy humor and jokes about body parts (see CBS monday night…ugh)

Hopefully, there will be another one next year we get to watch for 13-22 episodes and then pine for the humor that once was…

  • Rebecca

Ah, you had to mention Good Guys. I LOVED that show.

I saw someone say this elsewhere, and I agree: Dakota Johnson does a better job of playing “awkward” on BAK than Zoe D does on NG. I like Nate as Ben on the show, too, but now I can’t stop looking at his bad teeth since someone here mentioned it, lol. The little girl who plays Maggie was great in “We Bought a Zoo” also. And they seem to be giving Lucy Punch more to do, so I’m enjoying the show more and more as the weeks go on. Lately I like it more than RH.

  • Nancy

    @Honey Badger

    No they won’t (:

  • Rebecca

Correcting myself….Maddie, not Maggie, on BAK. Still getting the hang of all the names on all the shows.

  • Joe

Here’s the thing though: I don’t see a scenario where FOX admits their comedy block was a failure and cancels every new comedy unless all three start doing REALLY poorly. Which is plausible…but I think they will do everything they can to at least get one of these shows to renewal. If The Goodwin Games premieres mid-season and does respectably than both B&K and Mindy are goners. But if that falters as well, I think they’ll turn to either Mindy or B&K for at least a 13-episode renewal next year.

One thing is for sure though – The Mindy Project should not be behind New Girl in the spring. It’s doing nothing with its audience. FOX should try The Goodwin Games after New Girl and move Mindy to B&K’s slot, or even try slotting B&K post-New Girl for a week to see if it can do a better job of holding NG’s audience. But they’re wasting a respectable lead-in on a show that’s just collapsing under it.
