Definitions:
DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs.
Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.
Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate
Until the 2009-2010 season, we used a show's LIVE program rating or viewership as the base upon which the LIVE+7 day DVR viewing was added. Now, the press seems to be standardizing around using LIVE+SAME DAY DVR viewing as the base for the calculations, so that's what we do now as well.

@b plus “Big Bang theory almost gets 21 million! Wow! I haven’t seen high ratings like this for a Thursday night sitcom since Friends!”
The key word is DVR vs live…Friends was the last must see tv show.
@Nate
TVD did make the list last time. But it’s obvious that most fans watch it (and Arrow, and SPN) live, which isn’t a bad thing.
The key word is DVR vs live…Friends was the last must see tv show……even with the invention of TIVO/DVR
*COMEDY
speaking of which, i wonder what was friends LIVE 7 dvr/tivo rating.
@b plus “Big Bang theory almost gets 21 million! Wow! I haven’t seen high ratings like this for a Thursday night sitcom since Friends!”
Try Survivor, CSI and Grey’s Anatomy just a five or six years ago. CSI was in 28MM-30MM range for some time. GA had a much higher demo than TBBT. Survivor as well. I
TBBT IS THE NEW FRIENDS
When Friends ended its run in 2004 DVR usage levels were in the low single digits. It is impossible to guess how many folks would have taken advantage of time shifted viewing opportunities.

I think the operative word in b plus’ comment was sitcom.
After that brilliant finale, I have to say Revolution deserves this fantastic increase in ratings.
@jt
“Friends was the last must see tv show.”
LOST, Desperate Housewives, and Grey’s Anatomy beg to differ…
@Lane
It really isn’t.
Besides the top 25 in percentage increases were 40 percent or more. For argument’s sake say Supernatural had a 30 percent increase for the episode that aired that week. That’s a 0.3 post air date increase. Putting its Live+7 at 1.3. Which a 0.3 beats ever other CW show’s post air date increase.
It’s just the fact that the majority are watching Live+SD.
Which numbers count? Live? Live +3, or Live +7? It seems to me that ABC is not as bad as they look when you look at DVR numbers.
@DougF
How exactly does this contradict anything I said?
@DougF
Oops, now I see that you’re not disagreeing with me. Sorry about that.
@justin121 were you born when friends was on the air? The wide appeal was greater than all those shows combined.
“TBBT IS THE NEW FRIENDS” The big bang theory isn’t the new friends…nothing will ever be. You posting that is like someone saying lebron james is the new Micheal jordon or justin bieber is the new Micheal jackson.
You can make the comparison, but it’s not even close.
@ Devin
The only ones that count are the ones we do not see (Live+C3).
Jippi Bones Bones Bones
!!!!!!!
And Revolution is again the big winner !!!!
