    Nice for Arrow, unfortunate for SPN, although it won’t materially affect its renewal.

    The SPN episode was one of their “wacky” episodes, which are usually much poorer in concept than regular episodes. This is what happens when writers get the notion that some off-the-wall concept is “cool”. Producers need to drive a spike through that crap early on: “You’re not here to be ‘cool’, you’re here to keep us on the air!” :-)

    @thesnowleopard

    Are you serious???
    You and three of your friends are the one discussing your butthurt issues (from past seasons no less) and bringing fan opinions here, not me. And I’m not a Sam fan, but you’re obvious counting everyone who doesn’t go around bashing a character a Sam girl. I like all characters, and the show. You however, sound rather ridiculous with trying to police the comments against Cas hate (or any opinion that you disagree with) while starting Sam hate (and blaming the rating drop solely on his flashbacks as if it were a fact, and people somehow predicted the episode would even have any), and then telling ME to go elsewhere. I really hope you’re a teenager, and don’t just behave like a really immature one. Cause that would just be sad.

    @Selen

    Excuse me, but you’re the one who was posting a big rant about how awful it was that Sam was being neglected as a character in favor of Characters Who Shall Not Be Named. Since this is a *ratings* site, that led me naturally to conclude that you were 1. confusing this with a fansite for the show, 2. a Samfan who was butthurt about anyone enjoying what you clearly are not, and 3. determined to ruin the fun for those other fans. Don’t want to come off like a bitter whackjob? Don’t post like one.

    Though hey, even if you do, I’m sure Bill and Robert won’t mind the hits.

    It’s kind of a dilemma for the writers, though. It’s true that the more experimental shows tend to get meh ratings when they first come out, but many of them also get a ton of buzz and end up being fan favorites. And fan favorite episodes of a show are probably big draws in syndication (“Hey! ‘Monster Movie”s on for the 50th time! I gotta go watch it!”).

    So, I can see why they continue to do them, even if I do agree with you that the writing on some of them is decidedly iffy and the initial ratings bonanza is usually less-than-stellar.

  • Carl

    @CS, I felt like they almost rushed to get Cas out of the way in season 7, even though he did technically start all the stories. I think it was all cheaply done, because imagine the stakes if Cas really was taken over and spent the whole season fighting against the Winchesters while inside maybe starting to rebel against the Leviathans. Instead they brought in James Patrick Stuart, who is a very good actor, but who played such a one-note role.

    I guess we’ve probably gone in circles but I wanted to say thanks for listening.

  • Nicole

    @ Lolly, I completely agree with you. The promo for 8×08 was horrible and it wasn’t like the actual episode at all.

    When I first watched 8×08 I didn’t like it, but after re-watching it I enjoyed it more. I actually liked the cartoon theme and I loved the small Castiel moments. The Cas and Dean talk was especially great because we got some Dean character development (he actually talked to someone besides Sam about their feelings etc., which is huge) and Cas development as well, of course.

    After the disaster that was season 7 this season is brilliant to me. I wish they had made Carver (or even Edlund?) the show-runner for season 7 instead of Gamble. I think Carver has something planned as well. He’s a great writer, so I’m confident it’ll be a good season and he can maybe recover the show from the previous season.

    The biggest disappointment so far is Sam’s storyline. His flashbacks (especially in 8×08) are so boring and cheesy, and they seem so irrelevant to what’s going on with the actual plot.

    @ CenterGravity. If nobody watches CW shows then why are there so many people talking about them? Just because you don’t like them doesn’t mean other people don’t.

  • Nicole

    @Carl. They should’ve extended the whole Godstiel thing and made him the main antagonist for most of season 7. And then when the leviathan!Castiel thing happened they should’ve extended that for the rest of the season as well. Season 7 would’ve actually been exciting and interesting if they’d realized the potential they’d had. I’m still annoyed that the writers let such potential slip through their fingers.

    Completely agree with you. Collins was such a great actor and the last few moments of him being leviathan were terrific. They must have continued that story arc instead of that crazy!Castiel stuff. And also they must have found some other solution to Sam’s hallucinations.

    The Cas and Dean talk was especially great because we got some Dean character development (he actually talked to someone besides Sam about their feelings etc., which is huge) and Cas development as well, of course.

    This is something which I want the writers to avoid. It has become way offline this season. Especially as there is no good female writer in the crew, male writers are not able to bring out the emotions properly from the characters. It has become ridiculous and un-watchable. I haven’t watched the episode yet but I can say, that scene is going to be boring and I hope it is less than 30 seconds. Dean telling his experiences in hell in season 4 or about his Dad’s death in season 2 were some of my least favorite scenes on the show. I think, show can ignore these scenes, show us something better. I want to see more brotherly moments rather, but not at the cost of the story-line.

    The promo for 8×08 was horrible and it wasn’t like the actual episode at all.

    Promo may have been bad but, but the effect is very little on the ratings.

    Was hoping modern family would get adjusted up, good episode.

    Arrow, rocks!! I think the ratings could go to miracle land of 2s next year if paired with the new Wonder Woman (that is if they do a great job on it as they have done with Arrow). Maybe they should crank up the budget so they could afford more action like they had in the pilot.

    I love sci-fi, horror and superhero genre, but I can’t get into supernatural. It’s on my DVR, I have tried watching 4 episodes and I can’t get through them this season.

    Lol Charlie Brown beat Crap Factor!!!

    They should rethink moving Suburgatory and giving it to How to Live With Your Parents. Trailer looks funny as hell, looks like a great fit with MF. Come on ABC…..

  • ruben

    Supernatural needs to end! The first five season were awesome. Now, it’s just garbage. What a shame.

  • Selen

    @thesnowleopard

    Excuse me?? Where did I rant about anything? Are you confusing me with someone? I posted once before your “butthurt Samgirl” accusations, and I didn’t rant about any neglect or even mention any character-that-should-not-be-named. I just expressed my dislike of bringing your character bias and obvious bitterness over past seasons to a rating site instead of discussing the ratings. And to keep the character hate to fan forums (if that’s really your idea of having fun).
    Go back and check the comments yourself if you don’t believe me. And while you’re at it, read your own comments again. You’ll notice who comes over as an obnoxious wackjob, and a seriously over-invested extreme fan. Honestly, extreme fans/haters like you are the ones ruining Spn fandom for others, and now also rating sites. And don’t kid yourself, you are in no way better (if not worse) that the Cas haters you like to attack so much. Pot, kettle etc.

  • Mary

    @Carl this was posted on page 7
    “Get rid of the Whinechesters and maybe Supernatural will feel fresh again. Focus more on the horror instead of family drama BS.”

    Don’t know how serious the person who wrote it was, but if they were, they simply have no idea what the show is about. I never said anything about getting rid of Sam. That’s another story from other sites (even though fans from there come here too, to shove down our throats their extreme opinions, claiming that they’re “official”)

  • Roczane

    Supernatural. The BEST!!! :D

  • Christine

    I am loving Supernatural this season. It is awesome. I don’t know if the fluctuation has a bit to do with xmas specials etc… but I hope it is around for years to come. With no NHL season this year it is the only show I watch.

  • Janus

    The SPN ratings slip isn’t a big deal overall BUT THE CAUSE is disappointed SAM GIRLS(and some guys) over Sam’s girlfriend flashback story which this last episode had a ton of…and WHY the second half hour dropped off so much. It wasn’t Cas–who is popular with most fans…he just has a few loud mouth haters that go on sites pretending they speak for everyone. Most SPN know that is nonsense.

  • DeanandSam

    I am so laughing at the obvious comments blaming the ratings drops on Sam’s flashback. Fans had no way of knowing that there will be flashbacks for sam, since it was PROMOTED as nothing but Cas. If there is a blame to be put on, it would be Cas. I guess people didn’t want to tune in to see him. See how easy it is to put blame on a character? Sam is a main character, alongside Dean, they both bring in the ratings. I laugh at the Extreme Cas girls, if the DVR ratings for this episode come up as a high, who will you say brought in those high DVR ratings? You guys are so obvious now, that I know the answer to this one. Yup, all the blaming on Sam being the reason for the low ratings, you are going to turn around and say Cas was the reason for the high DVR ratings. You guys are pathatic and sad. Thank God though the numbers always speak for themselves when it comes to an episode just about Sam and Dean and they maintain the high ratings for themselves. Many episodes this past year had no Cas and Sam and Dean (the two main characters) kept a steady high ratings proving that this is their show and nobody elses. Cas fanatics like to just put and finger point at Sam for being the cause of the ratings dropping, but they are just so obvious with their hypocritical that if the DVR ratings for this episode comes out with high numbers they would switch around and say Cas was the reason. Cas is not the reason for any high ratings. AS long as Sam and Dean are on the show, poeple will still tune in. If there was an episode with just Cas, your special little snow flake will not pull a 2Million viewer, he would be lucky if he even got 1 million viewership. TIme to hit reality Cas fanatics. You guys are becoming obvious, I am sad for you.

  • Restless

    Well, the episode that was promoted as Castiel’s big return hit a 1.0 and had the highest DVR in at least two years (1.6) He’ll be in the episode after next again, so I guess we’ll see.

    Hopefully the ratings bounce back. And if they don’t, then maybe Janus has something. There do seem to be a lot of fans disappointed with Sam’s storyline and characterization. Maybe they have bailed.

    But to be honest, Castiel is my favorite character yet I didn’t watch this episode live either. I can’t speak for anyone else but after a fabulous showing of badass Cas, I wasn’t ready for incompetent or crazy!Cas to make a reappearance. They use Cas for some really unfunny jokes sometimes.

    But anyway, blaming Sam or Cas for rating failings seems stupid and petty. Especially since there’s not enough evidence either way.

    @CHRISTIAN:

    “Im soooo happy Supernatural dropped. Worst show I’ve ever seen in my life.”

    If that’s the worst show you have ever seen in your life, I envy you. It was Emmy-worthy, all the while remaining awesome and cool for 5 whole seasons.

  • John

    @Justin: “Oh, and I quit SPN because of the awaful Castiel character was shoved down our thorats as a third lead. Like Bobby wasn’t enough. Ugh. And after the show was primarily Sam-centric for (its best) two years it opt to fan-girl-loved Dean, and Castiel after that, at the expense of story telling. Thanks, but no thanks.”

    Castiel, Bobby, Jo, Ellen, every character that came on the show was integral! Season 4 and 5 were masterpieces! Dafaq you talking about! Are you high or are you a brainless zombie!
