Sophomore sitcom Don't Trust The B---- In Apt. 23 didn't start well this season, and its ratings completely tanked in its later episodes. It's been certain to be canceled for quite some time, but hadn't been in the headline after its downgrade.

I've seen enough of the ratings for The Neighbors, Nashville and Scandal to move them into the "likely renewed" category. As always, future ratings changes, particularly early in 2013, can mean prediction changes, stay tuned.

Happy Endings' woeful ratings this season has me close to breaking my own rules about third season shows and moving its current prediction to "likely canceled". It's in a third season that would normally have me keep it as a "toss up" since the syndication gods (and a crazy deal making producer, Sony) have shown an ability to keep even terribly rated sitcoms alive. If I downgrade it in the future, I'll call a technicality in that it won't have the "typical" 66 episodes at the end of its third season.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    *crying tears for Apartment 23*

Such a shame it’ll probably not go further than 26 episodes, but oh well – c’est la vie!

  • stevoreno

It is a shame. Happy Endings is one of the best shows on TV right now. Don’t Trust the B isn’t bad either. The ratings just tanked this year. I imagine the move to Tuesday really hurt along with delaying the premieres until most shows were already started. Oh well, I will enjoy them while they last.

  • Dan

@slddl – Apartment 23 will definitely Not get any more eps. In fact when the show goes on hiatus in Marchbwho impedir if the remaining eps will even air.

  • Dan

*Its unknown if the remaining eps will air

Don’t trust the B is pretty funny too.

  • moshane58

don’t watch ABC anymore except Gh since they kicked there loyal veiwers to the curve.

  • Sarah

I feel like Private Practice wasn’t so much cancelled as it was announced after only a few episodes it was the final season. I think most people knew going into this year it was the final season.

  • iowegian

You have repeatedly posted that The Neighbors will get canceled. If it was sure bear food it would get pulled from the schedule or moved to Saturday Night. The index indicates that it is in the upper part of the bubble group.

I have read your opinion on this several times now, please stop repeating.

  • JimNC

ABC really needs to pull the Neighbors out of their otherwise great Wednesday line up. Either Bitch or Happy Endings would be so much better on that night…and it would help their ratings. They should put Happy back on that night and keep it around to get enough for syndication.

  • Nick

Wow, mean people on this site.

No, but the one they have now probably is.

Grey’s Anatomy on Tuesdays at 8? Yeah right.

I honesty think it should be at 8 and propping up a night. It’s obviously not doung any good for the rest of the schedule at being at 9.
And “Yeah right” what? I wasn’t saying it would happen, I was saying it should happen.

  • Kaz

It’s weird how Happy Endings is pretty much in the exact position as Cougar Town was last year. Pretty bad ratings after being moved to Tuesday nights and will be about the same number of episodes as they were last year. If this pattern continues, ABC selling them to TBS does seem pretty likely. It’ll be interesting to see what happens. Even with the low ratings the show seems to have enough buzz/interest that I can’t see it ending, I think somehow it’s gonna get at least one more season, the only question is if it will be on ABC or somewhere else.

  • Tom

After “B— in 23″, and before that, “GCB”, hopefully ABC will realize that using “B—-” in a show title is not remotely creative, sophisticated, cute, or funny. It is just “b—–” (boring).

  • Gerald

So basically Nashville is getting the pity renewal? I only say that because I still don’t understand how it’s more likely to be renewed than canceled…. I mean the ratings are mediocre/awful. So I ask again? Is it because all the new shows did badly and to save face? Basically V first season kind of thing?

  • Bill Gorman

“So basically Nashville is getting the pity renewal? I only say that because I still don’t understand how it’s more likely to be renewed than canceled…. I mean the ratings are mediocre/awful.”

Nashville is at the low end of the likely renewed range, and is liable to drop back to a “toss up” once I restart the Index with 2013 numbers only, but it has averaged 88% of the ABC scripted show average. (even if you just crudely pull the premiere rating out of its average, it’s at 83%, which is still a toss up).

88% (or 83%) is nowhere close to “awful”.

  • Theoacme

@Nick – Grey’s Anatomy second overall at ABC, and the HUT levels are higher at 9 than at 8, so why move it from Thursday’s?

Plus Grey’s is not an 8 o’clock show in the first place.

ABC has lots of problems, but Thursday from 9 to 11 is not one of them.

  • ddafsafdfadssafd

Happy Endings is just like Scrubs and HIMYM, where its in danger of cancellation every season until it explodes in popularity and runs 10 seasons. And it appeals to women with the drama/relationships and men with the wacky humor just the same way.

  • Daryl

Never understood why Don’t Trust The B got renewed in the first place.

  • vincentdante

Guys you forget that ABC also has a stake in the music on Nashville. Currently, (December 6th,) there are ten different songs selling well on itunes derived from the Nashville soundtrack. I think the music deal will help weigh the show’s future as well as ABC trying to stay in business with Gaylord and the Opry.

  • SarahL

Who died and made you king of TVBN? I can post my opinion a million times if I want. Feel free not to read it or post about it.

BTW, ABC is burning off all the new episodes of Neighbors by March which is an indication that it will be cancelled so deal with that.

BS, you know much less than you think you do.
