CBS has debuted three new dramas every Fall since 2006-7. I'd expect them to do the same next Fall. So unless they have some schedule wizardry up their sleeves I haven't seen before (holding back Undercover Boss won't help!) they'll need to cancel three of their Fall 2012 dramas to make room for three more next Fall. With Made In Jersey gone, and Vegas a likely cancellation, that means one more Fall drama must go. It's virtually certain that CBS will cancel one of CSI:NYThe Good Wife, or The Mentalist.  And if spring drama Golden Boy is renewed, two from that list will need to be canceled.

Those imagining CBS will pull some schedule razzle dazzle (new shows on Saturday, time sharing, adding a 25th hour to the day!) do entertain us with your guesses in the comments.

What's your guess?

Even with an ungrateful actor, Two And A Half Men is CBS' #2 rated scripted show and they'll do whatever it takes to bring it back.

Why are Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods "certain to be renewed"? Both dramas are in their third seasons and need a fourth to reach the "magic" 88 episodes for stripped syndication. Both are "certain to be renewed" for their fourth seasons next year. Read more about that here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    The Good Wife

  • Jeff (Canada)

I’m thinking they’re going to cancel both The Mentalist and CSI:NY, along WITH Golden Boy!

  • merranga

i chose the mentalist just by virtue of being an unfunny psych.

  • Salias

I feel CSI: NY and The Mentalist are the ones dying this season. Good Wife is really no better, but it could save a slot, likely Wednesday before Criminal Minds or Friday before Blue Bloods.

  • Kevin

Most likely to get canceled: CSI NY

  • Nope

    please renew MENTALIST

  • Melanie

I say this every week — I wish Vegas was donig better.

  • Leverage-Fan

Wasn’t “The Mentalist” renewed for both a fifth AND sixth season? Of course, things can change, but CBS should inform the producers IF they don’t want another season anymore. A cliffhanger without resolution after five years would be a very unfair thing. ALL series deserve a true ending without cliffhangers!!!

  • Lance

Who is to say CBS doesn’t have some really good pilots in development for next season and decides to cancel all three of them?

  • Honey Badger

The Good Wife will bet two more seasons. CBS likes the awards from this show, and the big stars as guest stars on the show help CBS image

  • babs

The Mentalist is revving up its storylines this season so it definitely needs to keep going.

  • Honey Badger

    Fixed now

The Good Wife will be RENEWED for two more seasons. CBS likes the awards from this show, and the big stars as guest stars on the show help CBS image

    spoiler alert

On The Mentalist , Patrick Jane IS Red John

  • Leverage-Fan

    @Honey Badger: Spoileralert! ;)

  • Chris

Of the three, CSI: NY has to be the most expensive. And unless there’s some huge syndication deal to make squeezing out another 20-some episodes, I think it’s first to go.

The Good Wife is helped by whatever critical acclaim Julianna Margulies can squeeze out when awards shows may tire of giving Claire Danes attention for Homeland. But if CBS hasn’t gotten this show a syndication deal yet, how will another season help?

The Mentalist is the strongest of the three, even when it’s bumped nearly out of primetime due to football. But it’s the one show that CBS doesn’t also own. It gets canceled if Warner Brothers doesn’t lower their licensing fee, which I think was partly the reason Without a Trace was canceled a few seasons ago.

  • DW

there is a little bias here with the good wife as i really like the show. its real steady , granted its low but steady , CSI :NY is an older show cost more to produce , the mentalist is not owned by the network doesn’t get that rerun money its in reruns now. they don’t care about that show financially. also and this may sound odd but with the good wife , you can end its season the last Sunday of April first of may then let your amazing race / survivor season final fill up two Sundays in may / December like they are now.

  • drjay

vegas still gets all sorts of “love” from cbs to be so on the chopping block. several times durinf football this weekend it was in a commercial being touted as the “highest rated new drama” would they be oing to all that effort if they are gonna drop it in a few months…

  • omabin

If one of them is done for, and i still don’t believe that (i think cbs may give up on premiering yet another friday show), my guess is the mentalist

  • Ali

Keep The Good Wife, much better show than the other two if you ask me. Besides, it’s been doing about the same ratings as the Mentalist. I think it will boil down to which one of those two is more expensive to make really. Golden boy is toast, it will be dead after a few episodes and will be pulled from the shedule.

  • Franko

Golden boy, Vegas and CSI NY canceled.

TGW and Mentalist renewed and moved to Fridays.
