Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-December 2, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.42
Emily Owens, M.D. canceled 0.51
Gossip Girl final season 0.53
90210 :| :| :| 0.65
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.78
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 0.99
Supernatural      1.23
Arrow      1.68
Vampire Diaries      1.96

One Tree Hill. Gossip Girl. Both were veteran CW dramas that were given a short final season on their way out the door. With 90210 ratings this season as dreadful as they've ever been, a short 13 episode final season next Fall is its only hope, but just because the CW has done it before, doesnt mean they have to do it again.

What's your guess? Will 90210 get a 13 episode farewell season, or is 2012-13 its final hurrah?

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

If they do renew 90210 for a 13-episode Final season, they should do what they did with OTH and save it for midseason. The fall spot is too valuable to waste on a show that’s ending anyway. They should give their new shows the best opportunity for success, that that means a fall premiere.

Here’s what I think will happen:
Nikita: renewed for full fourth and final season for stripped syndication numbers
90210:renewed for short final season, 10-13 episodes
    HoD :renewed
Carrie Diaries:canceled(I hope it does well ,but I can see the reasons it might not)
    Emily Owens MD:already cancelled
This will leave four spots for new shows next season

  • Brandy

    B&tB:Cancelled (unfortuantly)

  • Nathaniel M.

I think CW can allow to launch even more shows next season. They have already ordered 5 (3+2) new shows this season, and if Gossip Girl doesn’t has a final season, it would be The Carrie Diaries which can premiere early at this Fall.

I am not sure how confident they are, but there are a few pilot like something about “The Hunger Games” called “The Selection”, or ” The Wonder Woman”. I think they will continue order the same as this year.

AND I am guessing maybe they will put the New Show on Tuesday at 8 ( before Hart of Dixie) , Wednesday and Thursday at 9 ( after their New Hit Show “Arrow” and their #1 show ” The Vampire Dairies”). Furthermore, I am guessing Nikita, Supernatural, America’s Next Top Model, and the other show that survive ( between The Carrie Dairies, Cults, Beauty and The Beast) would take Monday and Friday.

Therefore I am not agree with your reason that may cause 90210 being cancelled. However, even if one of the old shows like Nikita or Hart of Dixie is being cancelled, 90210 still need 2/3 cancelled ( from BATB, Cults, TCD), which I guess is really unlikely with both occur.

  • POI

i think it has a chance of getting back if the ratings stay where they are now, because B&TB is falling and Nikita will have a final 4th season, Emily Owens is canceled and Gossip Girl is in its final episodes and if the Carrie Diaries Bombs which is expected they will have 4 shows canceled and could bring in new shows that might get the network up if they become hits like Arrow this year.

  • Brandy

@Nathaniel, they ordered five new shows this season cause for the last two seasons, they haven’t a hit since VD ,but Arrows a hit this season so they won’t have to order as many new shows. They have a bunch in development but only four to five will make it to air as they can’t afford to put more that many new shows on next season.

  • Melanie

Let’s say Cult does well enough in the Tuesday 9PM slot to get a renewal. Its still only going to be a renewal for 13 episodes — its planned to have shortened seasons like a cable show — so it won’t necessarily take a Fall schedule spot even if it is renewed.
Theoretically then 90210, & Cult could share a spot if 90210 gets a short farewell season.
I’ve no idea how Carrie Diaries will do — it looks perfectly dreadful to me, but that could mean it will be a big hit.
Midseason for the CW replaces Gossip Girl w/ Carrie Diaries and Emily Owens with Cult, right?

  • Kate

Mark Pedowitz has said he believes in giving veteran shows send off seasons. Whether or not he stays true to his word in regards to that is another story, but I feel as if he will. I think 90210 will get a shortened final season of 10-13 episodes, they’ll probably air them in January a la OTH. At least one of their new shows for the 2013-2014 broadcast season will be axed and they’ll need a replacement.

I still think BATB is a goner, HOD as well. If they renew it for a third season they could have to renew it for a fourth and it doesn’t have the numbers to support that. Yet again, this is the same network that renewed Nikita with its abysmal ratings last year. So who knows.

  • Peter Mazz

Well, i think that HoD is going to be cancelled, i was comparing the ratings with Nikita last season and HoD’s ratings are alot lower than Nikita’s. And Nikita is on a friday, and its more expensive, and altrough Nikita has big ratings over seas, HoD has big ratings online, but HoD is stable. I think that if HoD doesn’t have more promotion, and the promos are alot more good, it will be gone by may ;)

  • Michael

90210 is the only show on the CW that I still watch! I hope it gets renewed for a full season. I will be very sad if it ends this year. I want it to outlive GG so badly!!!!

  • pete5125

The reason GG was renewed and so will be 90210 for at least a 1/2 season is because of their crazy Netflix’s deal which rewards them for continuing shows with large libraries of old episodes, if they renew it then they are paid for the previous seasons for another year, so their is an incentive to keep vets on the air one more year, but being the bad ratings it is sure to get…also they can only launch so many shows, 2 up to 3 at most without running out of money, so running 90210 in the fall and launching a show mid-season is a better strategy, unless CULT and Carrie Dairies works, well then they have a new ball game

  • thesnowleopard

Thing is, Mark Pedowitz is going to do whatever best serves the financial bottom line for the network, regardless of how he feels personally. And he’s not going to badmouth any of his shows while they’re on air. The guy is in there to fix the network, if he can, which means he has to go with the best overall business decision, even if it means axing a show he likes or that doesn’t get a proper ending. He really doesn’t have a choice.

That doesn’t automatically mean 90210’s a goner after this season, mind you. The ratings are pretty close and it’s been a bubble show for a while. It could go either way and we really don’t know how factors like the Netflix back library affect its chances (or even if they do). I’m just saying that *if* 90210 gets a final shortened season, it will be because that gets the CW more money than if the network cancelled it at the end of five seasons. Giving older, failing shows a final swan song just to satisfy online fans won’t have anything to do with it.

    Please stop spamming this thread.

    I would be happy if:
    Hart of Dixie-Renewed
90210-I like it but wouldn’t be sad to see it go!!!
Arrow is okay I’m sure it’s coming back.
Gossip Girl- They should have ended after season 4!!! I will miss Chuck&Blair!!!

  • Bizzaro Bondoel

    Nikita should be canceled!

  • david

I think they should cancil or end 90210 this season so they can put something new in its place. It looks like they are going to have alot of pilots to work with this up coming season.

  • Gillian

I’d cancel it. Much better to give better performing, newer shows (or entirely new ideas) the chance to build an audience than invest 13 more episodes in something that everyone knows has had its day. They have time to wrap things up well enough. If there’s nothing more to do and no more stories to tell (and there isn’t), bin it.

I know it will be renewed but I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find that TVD starts to slide in the spring and next season. I am (was?) a fan, but it is beginning to feel like a stuck record, and since its a show which relies almost entirely on its ‘triangle’ when the triangle feels old, it’s past it’s sell-by.

Moreover, I think the supernatural genre in general has been done to death now. The death of Twilight (long may it remain dead) will also mean things move on a bit. These things come in waves and it feels to me that we’re on the end of the wave, not the beginning. Then again, maybe it’s just me that is very very bored with it.

  • Oliver

The CW will want to premiere 3 hours worth of scripted programming in the fall.

Let’s assume B&TB will be cancelled and ANTM is permanently relegated to summer.

The CW will need to renew either 2 or 3 of 90210, Cult, The Carrie Diaries and Hart of Dixie (depending on what they decide to do with ANTM’s slot).

In theory, they could even renew all four and give both Cult and 90210 half-seasons.

  • Brandy

@Oliver first, CW used to only premiere three shows but last season I believe it was four and this season five so count on four new shows at least.Theyre not going back to three as they need to premiere more so more new shows will be hits so they stay alive after 2015-2016 and they can replace underperforming shows.
Secondly, it’s been announced that Cult will only have 13 episode seasons as MP wanted cable length/style seasons cause it’s heavily searilized ( he said that’s what went wrong with Ringer, too long of a season).

  • Rayyan

    my guess for Fall 2013-2014
    8- Embrace/Abaddon’s Journal
    9- 90210

    8- HoD
    9- Oxygen

    8- Arrow
    9- Amazon

    8- TVD
    9- Cult

    8- Nikita
    9- SPN

    For Spring
    Mon (Embrace/Abaddon’s)/The Hundred
    Tue HoD/Oxygen
    Wed Arrow/Amazon
Thu TVD/Misfits US aka Tomorrow People (Cult – only 13 episodes per season)
    Fri Nikita/SPN

*SPN is in Fri because they need a series to boost their rating on that day and SPN likely can do it.

  • Mike D

man, i wish they pick up back “Aquaman”. i love the pilot back in 2006 (i guess). Aquaman is better than Arrow (opss!). When they pick up back Cult, it makes me wish they do the same with this series.
