Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-December 2, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Fringe (F) final season 0.49
The Mob Doctor canceled 0.54
Ben And Kate  0.73
Raising Hope      0.86
The Mindy Project :| :| :| 0.88
The Cleveland Show :) :) :) :) 0.95
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.07
Bones      1.09
American Dad already renewed 1.14
Glee      1.18
New Girl      1.28
Family Guy already renewed 1.44
The Simpsons already renewed 1.62

The Mindy Project ratings recovered a bit last week to a 1.5 adults 18-49 rating. Considering the currently woeful overall state of Fox's scripted show ratings, that's still in the "toss up" range for renewal or cancellation by the end of the season. 2013 results will end up determining the show's future.

Raising Hope is predicted as "certain to be renewed" even with its somewhat weak early ratings. While the syndication gods ruling Fox aren't quite as predictable as those ruling CBS, it would take nothing short of a cataclysm to prevent the show from getting a fourth season. • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I think FOX may give Mindy another chance if they redo their lineup. A Glee, New Girl, Mindy line up is probably their best bet – and get it away from ABC and NBC.

  • Jeff (Canada)

Cancel Mob, Ben/Kate, and Mindy. Touch will probably be cancelled too. Renew The Following and The Goodwin Games. Renew the rest (except Fringe of course).

  • Sarah

I’m a bit worried for Bones after last night’s numbers.

  • Justin

I think FOX Needs to change up their Lineup:

    8:00- New Girl
    8:30- Ben & Kate
    9:00- The Mindy Project
    9:30- Raising Hope

I’m not. Bones was Fox #1 non-animated script show two weeks ago and #1 Fox script show last week. Glee is doing terrible even with X-Factor lead-in, Bones is holding up quite well in Monday’s death slot. With The Mob Doctor and Fringe already cancelled and Touch most likely returning low too (it’s finale last season on thursday at night got 1.2 or so), they can’t afford to lose its pretty much only stable show.

Besides, the bonus episodes are over now, and the rest of Season 8 looks very promising! December is never a good month for ratings, and last week’s episode was one of the worst of the series. I’m certain it will do fine once it’s back in January with 17 new episodes and almost no more breaks. :)

Maybe they can get Robin Williams to reprise his role as Mork and rename the show The Mork and Mindy Project?

  • omabin

    @Sarah, Bones if fine.

I think mindy will not survive the year with the current schedule.

“December is never a good month for ratings, and last week’s episode was one of the worst of the series.”

True. And I had feeling that the #s would fall because of “Joke”, but I didn’t expect a “1.9”. :(

  • Brian

Glee is doing well as usual. Merry Christmas to you all and have a Happy New Year for when we re-convene again after the holidays :)

  • Ben

@Justin; Fox tried airing New Girl Tuesday night at 8PM. The ratings went down. I doubt if they will try it again in the near future.

  • TVDude

I think it will come down to Fox deciding if it wants to have a two hour block of comedy or not. If they keep it at two hours, I think Mindy will be back, but if they don’t it’ll get canceled. Raising Hope and New Girl will both return, but I think, if the block stays at two hours they will almost have to have one of the new shows return as well. Mindy had decent buzz going into the season, so I think that shows that even if a show looks good, it might not perform well, or even worse than what is already there.

  • SarahL

I like The Mindy Project a lot, but unfortunately, I see “likely cancellation” in its future.

What does it say about your “network” (I use the term loosely) when your top 2 shows, and 5 of your top 8 shows are all cartoons?

Last nights numbers are making 2 of my early picks for cancellation despite a current Certain/Likely renewal status look a little better … Bones & Castle. Long in the tooth shows with expensive production costs, fading ratings and more than enough episodes in the can for syndication are prime food for … for … I need to find an animal as a mascot … for the Surprise Cancellation Dingo?

  • Joe

One of Mindy and Ben & Kate will be renewed, unless The Goodwin Games is a surprise hit. Looks like the odds are favoring Mindy right now but they haven’t been all that far apart in the demo recently…

  • Joe

@Justin That doesn’t make much sense. Raising Hope might not be all that strong of a show, but it’s stronger than The Mindy Project. And I’d say New Girl needs to be kept at 9, although it might actually get better ratings if it aired at 8 because it wouldn’t be in the comedy deathmatch. But I think anything else FOX tried at 9 would likely get similar numbers to the Tuesday ABC comedies…

I do think Ben & Kate should be given a shot after New Girl. It might retain NG’s audience better than Mindy.

  • Jon

I still don’t understand why The Mindy project would be worth saving, its ratings are horrid

Good to see RH “in the green”

  • bk8718

So if Mindy keeps falling, and The Following tanks, is there any chance that FOX only renews Bones, Glee, New Girl and RH? [and their animated lineup]
