The Mindy Project ratings recovered a bit last week to a 1.5 adults 18-49 rating. Considering the currently woeful overall state of Fox's scripted show ratings, that's still in the "toss up" range for renewal or cancellation by the end of the season. 2013 results will end up determining the show's future.

Raising Hope is predicted as "certain to be renewed" even with its somewhat weak early ratings. While the syndication gods ruling Fox aren't quite as predictable as those ruling CBS, it would take nothing short of a cataclysm to prevent the show from getting a fourth season. Read more about it here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Both TMP and B&K ahould be likely cancellation. It’s ratings are just too close.

What Fox SHOULD do in 2013-2014:

    Mon-
    8: Bones (full final season)
9: Gun Machine (new)/ Untitled Wyman/Abrams project (new)

    Tue-
    8: Raising Hope
8:30: The Goodwin Games/ Live From Our Living Room (new)
    9: New Girl
    9:30: Wendy & Peter (new)

    Wed-
    8:  X Factor/ Idol

    Thu-
    8: X Factor/ Idol
    9: Kitchen Nightmares/The Following

    Fri-
8: Glee (22 episode final season)
    9: Touch

    Sat-
    8: Fox Sports Saturday

    Sun-
    7: The OT/ Cops
    7:30: The OT/ Bob’s Burgers

    9:30: American Dad

It’s amazing that The Simpsons, in it’s 24th season is Fox’s highest rated scripted show. They better hope that the writers NEVER decide to call it quits, otherwise their scripted average will fall lower than NBC’s.

  • Ellen

Mindy & New Girl could do better if they weren’t on such an awful night or had better lead-ins. For a self starter Mindy is not doing that poorly. If it rises two tenths it should be renewed.

    My Predictions:

    The Cleveland Show-Likely Renewal
    Bones-Certain Renewal
    The Mob Doctor-Certain Cancellation
    Raising Hope-Certain Renewal
    Ben and Kate-Certain Cancellation
    New Girl-Certain Renewal
    The Mindy Project-On the Bubble
    Glee-Certain Renewal
    Kitchen Nightmares-Likely Renewal

I appeal to the Powers-That-Be at Fox to cancel this unfunny mess of a show. I checked it out early on and couldn’t believe how a talented writer/producer/actress such as Kaling could create such a vapid and silly (and not in a good way) alleged comedy. It’s obvious that it hasn’t clicked with viewers and it really needs to be put out of its misery.

  • lyndle

Just wondering, what is the syndication number for an hour-long scripted series? 100 episodes? If so shouldn’t that also be stated as a reason that glee should be renewed?

  • Bob Saget

Ben and Kate is really the only new comedy i’ve watched this year. It has its moments, nothing special. Cute cast with good chemistry. I hope it’s renewed but if not oh well.

  • rob60990

Mindy is definitely likely to be cancelled in my opinion.

“Just wondering, what is the syndication number for an hour-long scripted series? 100 episodes? If so shouldn’t that also be stated as a reason that glee should be renewed?”

88 episodes is enough for syndication but Glee is pretty much safe for another season considering how bad FOX is currently doing.

  • Ted Craig

@Ellen How is Mindy a self-starter when it airs after Fox’s highest rated non-animated show?

If I were Fox, I’d keep Ben and Kate over Mindy in part because it matches the night’s underdog vibe better. That’s why last year’s Glee/New Girl/Raising Hope line-up worked.

    @Sarah

Best to not take notice at some of the predictions/thoughts on here, some are motivated by that persons taste in said show. In all honesty, with the way the numbers are looking, Bones Season 9 will likely be the last, it had a good run so not much to feel sorry for there.

  • Jared

Its pretty obvious that FOX is having a pretty horrible Fall so far. The Mindy Project just hasn’t lived up to the expectations of being the new “New Girl”. I’m pretty sure FOX won’t have any trouble cancelling it come Spring.

  • Sarah

    @Bill

Is there any chance Bones could be moved back to Thursdays either in the spring or next season? I know it more than likely won’t happen, I’m just curious.

“Is there any chance Bones could be moved back to Thursdays either in the spring or next season? I know it more than likely won’t happen, I’m just curious.”

No idea. I don’t put any thought into scheduling hypotheticals.

  • Rebecca

“The Mork and Mindy Project” – that’s funny, lol.

Glad to see RH is still faring well on this list…Plimpton seemed happy about the show’s relative success on Ellen’s show yesterday (and the audience seemed quite happy, too). NG is alright too. Wish the other Fox Tuesday comedies were doing better, TMP and BAK. I’ll enjoy them as long as they air, though.

  • Craig

When Fringe concludes this winter, I will officially be watching nothing on Fox…

  • Eve

The Mindy Project is one of the funniest shows on television. The writing is fresh. I’ll stop watching Fox altogether if it’s canceled.

  • OliveGinger

I like the Mindy project, but do feel it could benefit from a stronger overall cast. Mindy is extremely talented as a writer but I’m not sure if she can carry this show. She needs an extremely skilled supporting cast, whose characters also get well developed — I think this show could be more successful as an ensemble piece. Maybe with the recent cast overhaul things will improve enough to get to the good side of the bubble.

  • Dan S

Unless TMP suddenly jumps in the ratings which I don’t see happening its done. I can see RH sticking around for syndication purposes but since Mindy is in its 1st season there’s little chance of it seeing a 2nd season. Looking fwd to Goodwin Games whenever that show premieres.

  • Derek

It’s a good show though, they give up too easily on shows now. If “Everybody Loves Raymond” came out now it would be canceled. The first season had low ratings, but they just kept going up and the rest is history. Nowadays they cancel shows so quickly, like Terra Nova.

The Mob Doctor and Fringe have wrapped up production.
