Whitney was downgraded to "likely to be canceled" last week, but Chicago Fire usurped the headline. Now her time in the headline has come!

With the ratings for Chicago Fire and Law & Order:SVU now effectively converged, I can't justify different predictions for them. Since their ratings (except for last week) have had them at or above the NBC scripted average each week, so they're both likely to be renewed. Of course, an old show like L&O:SVU can have the ratings for renewal, but its costs might drive it into being canceled. If the spring ratings don't paint a clearer picture, I'll wonder about that later.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013

  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Is it possible that none of the dramas will be cancelled in May? It seems quite impossible. This case either Parenthood/SVU/CF will need to go…

    I agree about Whitney

    @ Niki

That’s actually a good question because I don’t see any of their dramas getting cancelled so far. Chicago Fire will likely comeback. SVU and Parenthood are up in the air though. Depends probably on how well Deception and Do No Harm does. Also how Smash returns.

    @ Reed Addison

I also think the main reason why Whitney came back this year and will likely comeback next year is because NBC owns it and its really cheap to produce. This might work in Guys with Kids and Up All Night’s favor as well.

  • hammard

Interesting question for tomorrow/thursday, which do people think will come last at 8pm Wednesday this week Whitney or Arrow?

  • Zach

NBC would be stupid to cancel Parenthood. It wins is time slot a lot. Granted not because its rating are good, but because ABC and CBS are doing way worse. Averaging a 1.8 or so for a 10 pm show is not bad. Not at all. Especially if you look at the other 10 pm shows on NBC bar Revolution. Plus syndication is not far off.

  • TVDude

I agree with Whitney based on the two data points we have, but the status can change depending how the rest of the season goes. I mean, we only have two of thirteen to go off of and one of those was on the lowly rated Thanksgiving Eve. Will the rest of the episodes get renewal ratings? I personally think that’s unlikely, but if the whole average of the network goes down, which I expect it to since The Voice won’t be on in January, that does help Whitney’s chances.

I never really thought Chicago Fire was in danger. Its ratings can be better, but I think it needs a better leadin than SVU. SVU itself is in more danger since it’s got to be expensive. I wouldn’t be shocked with a final season order next year to draw the whole Law & Order series to a close. NBC seems to have embraced farewell seasons, even for low rated shows like 30 Rock and Chuck. I will be surprised if NBC outright cancels SVU.

NBC is a mess and only have 4 shows that would not be cancelled on CBS. Most of NBC shows have very low ratings.

It is a good thing NBC has NFL Sunday Night Football and The Voice, NBC is very dependent on these two shows, without them they would have nothing. The Voice greatly improves the shows that follow it as a lead in. Proof was last night when “ Blake Shelton’s Not So Family Christmas “ won their time slot following The Voice. Beating new episodes of Hawaii Five and Castle.
This is good news and bad news for NBC. The Voice as a lead in helps “ Go On “ and “ Revolution “ in the ratings, without The Voice they would have very poor ratings like the rest of the shows on NBC.

The good news it looks like NBC has a solid hit with The Voice and the show is making stars. The bad news is that they are replacing two judges next season, How will that affect the ratings.

It looks like The Voice has finally found singers that can achieve commercial success. And Cassadee Pope is already a star. She has two songs in the top 10 this week and a #54. # 54. Cassadee Pope

SVU will be Renewed but not for a final season. It will be moving to Friday at 10.
This show is NBC’s #3 Drama and the network needs it for a couple of years.

  • Joe

When The Voice is gone, we very well might see a few months where no show on NBC cracks a 2.0…

  • SarahL

I think that Chicago Fire is bear chow.

  • CenterGravity

Cancel Up All Night, and save Whitney and Guys With Kids. (I don’t watch any of these shows.)

  • Salias

    @DeanW

You are correct, SVU keeps bouncing from #2-3 on NBC’s scripted drama scale, it’s not going anywhere, expect maybe to change slots. Fridays behind Grimm will be great for Law & Order: SVU, versus staying on Wednesdays at 9.

NBC’s not going to cancel SVU unless it dips down to a 1.0 in the demo, SVU rarely falls below 1.6/1.7 on weekly basis. On returns or heavily promoted episodes it does 1.8-2.1 in the demo.

  • Niki

Which one is the nr. 2 drama? by Revolution being nr.1

  • Honey Badger

@ Joe , I think you are right.
What does everybody think NBC should do?

  • Just Desserts

I don’t get why the renewal status for the show Chicago Fire, The New Normal and Revolution are that high.

Chicago For has been idling around 1.5 in past few weeks and its unlikely to rebound to 2.0 while Normal and Revolution are so Voice-dependent that their ratings would easily collapse without it.

Go On is the only “safe” new show as far as I can tell.

  • Chris

Whitney is yet another show that should never have gotten past the development stages. The networks just don’t know what’s funny anymore. And Whitney sure as hell is not.

  • ccc

    @Niki

Parenthood is NBC’s No. 2 Drama, and by far its most consistent and non-lead-in necessary. It usually beats its lead-in and often wins its timeslot.

NBC has many other issues than to cancel Parenthood, especially because it will be just 20 episodes from a syndication deal after this season.

    More thoughts:

-I see a Do No Harm major faliure…they put it in NBC’s death slot (Thursday’s at 10)

-Deception looks like a show that will have a huge first night and then die (ex. The Event)

-On the Comedy side, I see them keeping Go On for sure, then it is well we can’t cancel everything. Community, Up All Night, 30 Rock and the Office are done for sure…that leaves us with Whitney, Parks And Rec, Guys With Kids and The New Normal. And the order I see them is from most promising to most likely to get canceled is Parks And Rec, Guys With Kids, The New Normal and Whitney. If Whitney survives it will be a miracle and I see another season of Parks and Rec in the future. Between the New Normal and Guys With Kids, The New Normal has the plum rating spot and is still barely beating Guys With Kids and GWK does well in repeats. I say it gets renewed, and TNN gets canned
