‘Leverage’ EP Says Season 5 Finale Works as Series Finale If the Show is Not Renewed

Leverage fans may have some cause for concern if a letter posted to fan site LeverageFans.com is anything to go by. Among other things, Executive producer Dean Devlin says:

As of the writing of this letter, we still do not know if there will be a season six of our show.  Just as we didn’t know when we created the last three episodes which are about to air.  Because of this uncertainty, John Rogers and I decided to end this season with the episode we had planned to make to end the series, way back when we shot the pilot.  So, the episode that will air on Christmas is, in fact, the series finale we had always envisioned.

This sounds pretty final, but Devlin does note that:

This is not to say we would not do a season six should we get the opportunity. Everyone involved with the show, from the cast, the crew, the writers and producers, would like nothing more than to continue telling these stories.

Of course, we haven't heard anything official yet, but this certainly doesn't seem like good news for the series. Any theories as to what is going on? Is there any hope for fans of the series? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

” brutony – I didnt even know it was back on! Didnt it just end its season on Sep 21st? Never saw ANY advertisements for it, and I watch TNT sporatically, with baseball and the NBA. I guess if a fan like me, whos watched it since its outset, doesnt know its back on, then its time to end it. ”

That logic makes no sense. You should end a show just because you dont know it is on ????

that has to do with bad advertising not the quality of the show.

i know what time Hart of Dixie comes on,that doesnt make it a good show(or bad).

I love this show. I hope it doesn’t end, but that certainly doesn’t sound good.

  • Jeff

I agree with everyone saying this does not sound good. Why would an EP even say anything if something was not in the wind about a cancellation?? I don’t know maybe I am wrong (hope so) but it just does not sound good. I also agree about the whole Christmas showing if R&I one of TNT’s highest rated shows is airing its finale on the same day how could that alone say cancellation for Leverage?? I think the letter from the EP says more.

  • Linda

I love Leverage, and there are so many episodes this 5th season that I love! So, I hope it has another season! If not, I’m glad they will be giving it the ending they wanted on Christmas!

In the rational world of the TV business, as opposed to the irrational world of TV fandom, is there any reason to think that the existence of a “just-in-case” series finale will in any way impact a network’s decision whether to renew? I ask this in complete ignorance and without sarcasm.

  • DanOregon

I guess what surprised me was that if TNT wasn’t bringing it back – why not promote “the final episodes” if only for your advertisers sake?

  • Leverage-Fan

@Ray: I don’t know. Some series made HUGE cliffhangers to left the persons in charge hanging, too. There are several series which were renewed after the producers made an season finale which worked as a series finale. Beside the first season of “Leverage” I remember several seasons of “CHUCK” or “StarGate SG-1″. Now, that Dean Devlin made this statement TNT COULD look not so good, if they cancel the series. I mean Mr. Devlin stated clearly that he want to please the audience and so they filmed a series finale just in case. If TNT cancel the series it COULD seem they don’t want to please the audience. But I have no inside, too and this is only my opinion!!!

I hope this will not the second series which will ending around christmas this year! :(

  • Jeff

Not at all being arrogant I love the show but I read that the ratings were something like 11% down from last year and 18% down in the 18-49 bracket if that is correct from a business stand point maybe TNT is fine with cancelling the show??

  • Shabbir

I agree with the majority here. Im a big fan but time to end this. episodes are almost the same and hardly anything new happens.

Im glad to see it will have a decent send off finale.

  • Loving Lost Girl

@ Shabbir, I disagree. This season has seen the relationships blossom between Nate/Sophie and Hardensen/Parker, which is awesome. I hope a 6th season is given and maybe Elliot can find love too.

  • Lowgren

I love this show and want to see a Season 6, 7, and 8. It’s a spunky well written show. It is Christmas, no bah humbug. TNT should keep Leverage aired as it does have a strong viewing audience even when Leverage appears on other channels like ION and channel 21.

  • Dude

Leverage is doing well. Idk what everyone is talking about. If I remember correctly, Leverage is always like one of the last to get renewed.

  • Yard

Leverage isn’t as good as it use to be. I wont be too sad to see it go.

  • KaniacTrue

I for one would be upset if Leverage was cancelled. TNT has done an awful job advertising this series. I love Leverage. It is one of my favorite shows on. Never miss an episode but I almost missed the premiere because of lack of advertising and a change in regular day and time slot.

  • Stu

I like the show, but it’s feeling past its prime. Too preachy, too mopey, taking itself way too seriously, and even when it’s been funny it hasn’t been up to their old standard. I did like the last two episodes of the summer, but most of the others have been just OK. I wouldn’t want it to continue with another season like this.

  • ann ryce

Leverage is still an amazing show and it deserves to be renewed! It’s ratings could have something to do with TNT failing to advertise for it during the summer except between 3-4AM, then during the winter episodes TNT moved it to Tuesdays at 10 pm without much advertising, TNT seems it’s not enough we have to PAY to have service to watch Leverage but we also have to furnish FREE advertising as well!! We are FANS not employees of TNT! The cast, crew and everyone that works on the show deserves better than this. They are truly amazing people who care about their fans and what we think! There are alot of stories that can be told still and the characters still have alot of growing to do. TNT, we the FANS of Leverage will fight you to keep our show. SO GET READY!

  • Kitten

I hope Leverage is renewed. The group really cares about each other and love the way they outthink the bad guys. It’s entertaining and there are not alot of shows out there where the group clicks together. Hope they give us a final season where alot of loose ends can be tied up. Sophie name, Elliot finds piece and a place to call home, we find out who Parker love and lost, and Hardison and Parker find happiness, and of course Nate and Sophie can have a life together.

To any of the critics who have posted that Leverage is not as clever or as funny as it used to be, I have seen all of the early and late episodes and couldn’t disagree more. Beth Riesgraf brings an impish quality in her portrayal of Parker, there are blooming on-screen relationships romances between the characters. The show’s critics fail to appreciate that choreographing television’s most complex schemes since Mission Impossible on a weekly basis is a challenge to say the least. I agree with Ann that the show’s airing time of 10:00PM is late, the show is being poorly advertised, and yet still manages to capture nearly 2 million viewers. By the way, Mission Impossible ran over twice the number of episodes and Leverage and Leverage competes.

  • RAY

i love Leverage, it is today’s version of Mission Impossible. I hope they give it a sixth season. I am holding my breath to see what they decide..
