MAXPREPS HOLIDAY CLASSIC TIPS OFF DEC. 26 WITH TOP HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS IN NATION
10th Annual National Basketball Tournament To Be Held Dec. 26-29 in Palm Springs
CAMERON PARK, Calif., Dec. 6, 2012 — MaxPreps.com, the online high school sports leader and a CBSSports.com site, will host the 10th Annual MaxPreps Holiday Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. on Dec. 26-29, 2012. The tournament, formerly known as the Desert Heat Classic, annually draws some of the top high school basketball teams from across the country.
Two of the nation’s top three recruits headline the field of players who will compete in this year’s MaxPreps Holiday Classic, comprised of more than 120 teams from 11 states. For the first time, girls teams will also compete in the tournament this year.
“MaxPreps set out to create the finest high school basketball tournament in the country,” MaxPreps President and founder Andy Beal said. “We’re thrilled to bring together a great field of teams and outstanding elite talent at the 10th Annual MaxPreps Holiday Classic in sunny Palm Springs.”
Senior twins Aaron and Andrew Harrison from Fort Bend Travis (Richmond, Texas), MaxPreps’ #2 team in the country, are among the stars headed to the Classic. Currently ranked in the top three recruits nationally in the Class of 2013 by MaxPreps, the Harrisons led the Houston-area school to the Texas Class 5A state championship game as juniors.
Joining Fort Bend Travis in the 16-team open division will be four-time defending Georgia Class AAAA state champion Miller Grove (Lithonia), defending Washington Class 3A state champ Rainier Beach (Seattle), ranked the #7 team in the country by MaxPreps currently, and perennial California powers Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood), Loyola (Los Angeles), Orange Lutheran and Westchester (Los Angeles). Cardinal Hayes (Bronx, N.Y.), De La Salle (Chicago) and Madison Ridgeland Academy (Madison, Miss.) are also slated to challenge for the open division title, giving the Classic a true national field.
Other nationally ranked players expected to participate in the 2012 tournament include 7’4″ senior center Mamadou N’Diaye of Brethren Christian (Huntington Beach, Calif.), junior wing Shaqquan Aaron of Rainier Beach, and junior point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright of Loyola.
All games will be live scored by Qwixcore, MaxPreps’ live scoring mobile technology platform, and available to follow for free on the team pages throughout MaxPreps.com. In addition, MaxPreps, in conjunction with PlayOn Sports, will be streaming live all of the action on Friday and Saturday from the tournament sites hosting the semi-finals and finals as well as the three-point and dunk contests.
This year’s tournament will include a 16-team Invitational Bracket. In addition, there will be nine 8-team, Pool Play Boy’s Varsity divisions and a Boys Junior Varsity Tournament, which will be a 16-team bracket tournament. For the first time, the 2012 MaxPreps Holiday Classic will also feature three 8-team, Pool Play Girls Varsity divisions.
Last year’s MaxPreps Holiday Classic saw the Mater Dei Monarchs (Santa Ana, Calif.), led by senior super duo Xavier Johnson (now at Colorado) and Katin Reinhardt (UNLV), defeat Lincoln (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in the open division championship game. The Monarchs went on to compile a 34-2 record, capture California’s Division I state title and finish the season ranked #6 nationally.
