A Milestone Week for "The Young and the Restless"

"The Young and the Restless" Celebrates an Unprecedented 24 Consecutive Years as Daytime's #1 Drama

CBS Daytime Lineup #1 For 26 Consecutive Years

CBS's THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS this week marks its 1,248th consecutive week – or 24 years – as the #1 daytime drama, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for the week ending Dec. 2.

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, currently in its 39th season with more than 10,000 episodes, began its winning streak the week of Dec. 26, 1988.

It was also the year Scattergories was the most popular Christmas gift, "The Cosby Show" was television's top-rated program, "Rain Man" was the #1 movie, Nike's "Just Do It" slogan was first introduced and Apple shipped 1.3 million computers (compared to an estimated 25 million iPads in fourth quarter 2012).

THE YOUNG AND RESTLESS has also been #1 in women 25-54 for 302 of the past 303 weeks and first in women 18-49 for 297 of the last 298 weeks.

CBS's Daytime lineup has also been #1 for 26 years, beginning with the 1986-1987 season.  This season, all of the Network's daytime dramas (THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL), game shows (THE PRICE IS RIGHT, LET'S MAKE A DEAL) and THE TALK, the fastest growing network daytime program, are posting year-to-year growth in viewers and/or women 25-54.

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS is produced by Bell Dramatic Serial Company, in association with Sony Pictures Television.

    GO Y&R! GO!

It’s good to see a soap still getting really strong ratings.

Hopefully GH can catch it though since its been hot these last few months.

  • robert

Love Y&R, my favorite soap. It’s good to still see a soap getting good ratings. I don’t think Y&R will ever lose its #1rating.Go Y&R.

  • Bart

    Hooray for “Y & R”!!

It’s still not the classic show as penned by it’s creator Bill Bell, but I am enjoying it more these days now that Maria Arena Bell has been axed!!

  • TimsDale4ever

This show completely sucks compared to what it was the first half of it’s 39 years, and considering there’s only 3 other shows on now to compete with, not that big of an accomplishment now. To be number l in the 60’s nad 70’s (ATWT for 20 straight years) when there were around 15 soaps on – Now THAT’S an accomplishment.

CONGRATS Y&R! I know people who began watching 39 years ago (when we were “21”) and are still hooked today. This absolutely will be the last soap standing & hopefully will last into infinity!

    GO CBS!

@TimsDale4ever. Well, until three years ago, there were eight soaps. So, yes, it’s not the same as old days, but it’s not just the streak that is impressive. Y&R viewer totals are almost 30% higher than next nearest competitor (B&B). The gap was even higher most years. It’s ratings are almost double that of DAYS. When you think about all the hype certain shows have had for certain storylines over the past 20+ years, the fact that it stayed number 1 for every single week is truly remarkable.

Even though I don’t watch it i am glad for any soap with good ratings. We don’t want anymore Cancelled.Congradulations Y&R.

  • Kelby

Congratulations to Y&R! I love my soap and I wish it the best. When the show went to number one in 1988, it was bada.s! Those were the days. I would love to see the casting and writing be as good as it was then, but it has been on a downward spiral for years now, just as the other soaps. Come on crew! Get with it! Somebody straighten this show out!

  • rocky

A real head scratcher , ths show SUCKS, GH ROCKS !

  • Mike

    Y&R Rocks — GH SUCKS

  • Derrick

Congrats Y&R and YES Y&R rocks, GH sucks!

  • RLH78

I thought DAYS beat Y&R in the weekly ratings summer 1989 (Patch and Kayla’s wedding)?

    Regardless, congratulations to Y&R!

  • Mike

I think it did for the day but not for the week.

  • Grannienani

I started watching Y&R from it’s very first episode and occasionally watch today. I hope it gets back to it’s original great story lines and good quality. It is not good anymore, same old storys, over and over (changed around a little) as if the writers have run out of stories and are recycling the old stories. I check on it and switch it off. Hope it gets better.

  • Marcie

Love the Y&R. I’ve been watching it for many years. I hope it never goes off the air.

  • florence rosa

great show watching from the begin

  • Kevin A.

I have been watching Y&R since age 4 with my babysitter. One of my first memories is Lisa keeping Brad in a cage. Y&R was amazing up until Maria Arena Bell took over. Sad to say, it bores me to tears these days. GH is the far superior show this season. Congratulations Y&R! Here’s hoping you find a way to recapture the romance, drama, and beauty of your glory days.
