They mock the kind of cr@p being portrayed and marketed as “news”.

  • 1nancy2

You are right about that. Bill, John, and Steven make conservatives crazy. Come on, Conservs, it’s only comedy, so lighten up and have a good laugh. Happy to see you are still here, Faith3. I enjoy your input. BBL

  • Bobbyv

    Hi Nancy,

You are right, it is comedy. The issue is it is mostly directed at conservatives, which is fine, but some of it is nasty and would not be tolerated if directed at other groups (more Maher than the other two, though I admit he is funny). It is “comedy” when coming from some, “bigotry” when coming from others.

  • RedBarSoup

Did you just describe Hannity and Oreilly? Don’t worry, Oreilly puts ZERO research into what he talks about he just calls psy’s song stupid because it has “no words” because he can’t understand what he’s aying….oh wait that’s because the song was in a different language.

  • Faith3

What’s mostly directed at conservatives? Satire!?

  • Bobbyv

I am not going to defend Billo when he says something stupid, but when he starts referring to Muslim women wearing beekeeper suits he will be on the same level as Maher.

Faith, Stewart and Colbert are satire, but as I said that argument does not always work for the other side.

  • Faith3

Who from the other side is suppose to be delivering satire?

  • Bobbyv

I suppose anyone can, the question is will it be considered satire? I have heard Billo make jokes on his show, but he does not get the benefit of the doubt from many here who think he is a bigot. It is a dated example but I liken Maher to Andrew Dice Clay; the difference being that ADK targeted the wrong groups so he was a bigot who did not have long career as Maher has had.

  • Faith3

    What was Bill O’s joke?

  • Bobbyv

I was not referring to anything specific, I just know that he tries to be funny. I do not know if the Psy comment was a joke, but to those that do not like him it would not matter. I mention Maher because he is definitely not always joking when he says some things but it all seems to fall under the satire umbrella.

  • Bobbyv

I do remember the comments he made while at dinner with Sharpton. He was clearly making one point but people took it out of context to make him look bad. Maher you do not even have to take out of context.

  • Faith3

There is a difference between saying the absurd and poking fun at it.

  • Bobbyv

Who is saying it and who is poking fun?

  • Faith3

If you can’t tell the difference between absurdity and those who mock it, what can I say?

  • Bobbyv

I can tell the difference, but I am asking you who you think is saying it vs who is poking fun. I am assuming you think Biilo says the absurd while the others only poke fun at the absurd. If that is your point then I would guess you have never watched Bill Maher. He says plenty of absurd and insensitive things. If I am interpreting incorrectly please let me know.

  • RedBarSoup

People still comparing Maher to Billo? /sigh this never ends. If you don’t know the difference, then you will never be helped.

  • Bobbyv

First, what is the difference? Billo does news analysis, does Maher not do this? Does he not talk about, and know a lot about, politics?

Second, the discussion is about the different standards, Left vs Right. Is it ok to be insensitive as long as you smile? You think Billo is a bigot, what do you think about Maher?

  • Faith3

Let’s just say Bill O is often the victim of his own absurdities;-)

  • Bobbyv

On that we can agree. :)

  • RedBarSoup

They are the same? BillO is on the BIGGEST NEWS channel here in the U.S. What channel is Maher on? Oh yeah, HBO. A PAID entertainment television channel, the guy used to make a living doing stadnup….don’t even say they are the same.
