There were no changes this week, unless you count Leverage executive producer Dean Devlin saying that in the event the show isn't renewed for a sixth season, the Leverage season finale will serve nicely as a series finale. That news prompted commenter "Ray" to ask:

In the rational world of the TV business, as opposed to the irrational world of TV fandom, is there any reason to think that the existence of a “just-in-case” series finale will in any way impact a network’s decision whether to renew? I ask this in complete ignorance and without sarcasm.

That's a great question and the answer is "no, the existence of a 'just-in-case' finale likely has no impact whatsoever on TNT's decision process."

I view the PR campaign by the production team (and I'm not saying they spent a lot on it, but they did use an outside PR agency to help spread the word) as a combination of two things:

  1. Frustration that no decision has been reached yet
  2. A desire to connect with fans of the show with a "hey, we care about you" message

I have no reason to doubt the sincerity of either component. The way it has gone down signals to me that there is some thinking on the production team's part that maybe it would have been better, at least in hindsight, to just announce have announced season five as the final season so the series could have gone out with a little fanfare. Because in the case that this is the final season, it's getting no "catch the final season of 'Leverage' oomph from TNT. With a renewal still possible, it's not like Devlin and his team could issue press releases saying "We wish TNT was promoting the season finale as the series finale!" But, you know, in the case that it doesn't get renewed, in hindsight they will have wished TNT had promoted the season finale as the series finale.

Most of the shows on the list have statuses - if there isn't a status that just means there has been no announcement at the time of the most recent update (see date at top of post and/or above the table below).

If you find errors or omissions (excluding unscripted shows, kids shows or shows that have not aired yet) please note them in the comments and I'll update the table.

Notes:

  • Kids shows and Adult Swim shows are not on the list below
  • I've seen some squawking about shows on the list below that are owned/created by networks/studios outside of the United States. For purposes of this list, which focuses on U.S. cable networks, I'm only focused on where the shows air here in U.S.
  • Shows from overseas like Downton Abbey & Sherlock that air on PBS in the U.S. are not in the list below (PBS is not a cable network), though ITV has renewed Downton Abbey for a 4th season in the UK which will ultimately air in the states.
  • Despite some current inconsistencies in the table below, I do not intend to track episode orders or return dates specifically in this table at this time. The primary goal of the table is: what's been renewed, what's been canceled, and what shows fates haven't been decided yet.

    I admit, I haven’t watched Leverage since it returned. I was losing interest in it this past season. But I’m kind of surprised it hasn’t been renewed yet, as I thought it was doing good for TNT.

    That’s why I called it a thingamabob. :D
    Thanks Bill.

    But spam is a vital component of the American diet and culture!! Look at how much of it there is on TV!!

    :P

    @Robert Seidman

    To be fair though, past experience would say that it doesn’t matter when your contract expires when it comes to your show being renewed or not. Plenty of shows have had their cast out of contract before a decision has been made.

    Just comes down to networks dragging their feet and studios not wanting to tie up their cast if they’re unsure if they are coming back or not.

  • jj

    Both are excellent show and needs to be renewed, especially Leverage.

  • Ray

    @The End,

    Your original comment was that actors are unreliable sources of information becuase “they know as much as the public do about their shows renewal chances or when a show is coming back/decision due to be made. This is a fact.”

    It is not a fact. A fact is something that is true. The truth of your statement is dependent on specific circumstances and variable information, including the status of contracts for actors. That status might or might not be indicative of renewal/cancellation.

    The fact that there have been instances of actors “leaking” renewal info before an official announcement is also a refutation of your overstatement about actors’ knowledge.

    To be fair though, past experience would say that it doesn’t matter when your contract expires when it comes to your show being renewed or not.

    Being under contract is certainly no guarantee a show will be renewed. But being notified that none of the contracts are being renewed is usually a very good sign that a show isn’t being renewed.

    I really hope syfy renews alphas! Its a really good show and deserves a final season. I also hope being human and warehouse 13 do well when they return, these are great shows!

  • nateddog(future actor)

    COME ON ALPHAS LIVE DAMNIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Steven Leitner

    @Ali Sabir

    AMC doesn’t need to renew The Walking Dead early in every one of it’s seasons.

    Any chance for some international listings? I’m curious to see some of Canada’s Space channels shows fates and how Primaeval – New World is doing. Also might be fun to see some of the top international shows such as the UK or Japan. Just for some caomparrison points and to see what shows of quality we don’t get here in the US, QI being a prime example.

  • Ike

    LOL at “People Seemed Overly Annoyed That I Had No Status Here” for Doctor Who.

    You could just put “a lock for renewal” as you did for Walking Dead (although this is funnier). The ratings in the UK are very good. Not only that, but the recent season premiere on BBC America beat almost everything else on TV (including numerous broadcast TV shows) on a slow Saturday night.

    I’ve read that after the eight episodes (second half of S7) in early 2013, we won’t see a full new season until 2014 because of logistical difficulties with production or whatnot. Just an anniversary special and Christmas specials. Given the wobbly script quality lately, maybe somebody new needs to take over from Stephen Moffat, who is also probably overstretching himself by also being the EP for Sherlock. I’d like to see more than one person take over the show in the future. They really need a whole roomful of writers collaborating for the show, like we have in the U.S., but somebody told me that writers’ union rules in the UK make a writer’s room next to impossible.

    As for Alphas, I hope it gets renewed, but the signs aren’t promising. I’ll miss it. Surprisingly thoughtful, intelligent, adult show.

    Any chance for some international listings?

    Not likely. I’m not yet convinced I can do justice with even the USA-only listings.

  • Sharon

    Have anyone know anything about Leverage? I just hate TNT they should give Leverage a chance because they move the show to much.

  • coolioni

    @fake me out
    Dr. Who has already been renewed for series 8 being that it will be the shows 50th anniversary ! It currently just finished season 7.0 and will be returning in early 2013 for season 7.5 . The has been plenty of talk about what me might expevt during series 8.

    Several older characters have already went on record to confirm that they have been contacted to be in series 8 which will probally air anywhere between summer and fall 2013

  • Jess

    Leverage is not cancelled yet. all the fans have heard is about scheduling, scheduling, scheduling issues…Fans have been promoting this show like no tomorrow, and voting on it for a People’s choice award…We want Leverage renewed

  • carol

    I LOVE LOVE Alphas….sure hope it gets picked up for another season!!!

  • dryr

    I really like(d) both of them, but they have both gotten very lazy with writing (Leverage) and story development (Alphas). I would prefer they both did a better job and came back for another season, but they really only have themselves to blame if they don’t.
