The news that Happy Endings'  woeful ratings is sorely testing my rule that shows in their third season will fall no further than a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation because of the pull of the syndication gods. Having been burned twice by another low rated Sony sitcom ('Til Death), I'm still gunshy about moving it to "likely canceled". Call me "chicken". Heck, I'll call myself "chicken". Cluck, cluck!

The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    I’ve given up on watching anything on ABC. Every series I’ve liked on the network since 2005 has been cancelled after 22 episodes or less.

  • TV#1

    I hope the Cougar Town move to TBS works out. That way maybe they will consider picking up Happy Endings if ABC decides to cancel it. Both CT and HE would make a great pair.

    Cont….
    Same for Revenge last season. Mostly stellar episodes and just a few convoluted episodes after the Winter Finale. Last season a solid A and this season B (and thats pushing it). So few really great eps this season, the flashback ep was not even watchable. I did enjoy the Winter Finale but it still didn’t compare to even a standard ep last season.

    Like OUAT, I still enjoy Revenge but it needs to focus on what works.

    Nashville is my top network drama this season. Every ep has me entertained. And I don’t even like Country music! That says a lot about the scripts.

    I did an overhaul of my fantasy sched because a lot of people hated it so here it is:

    What ABC SHOULD do for 2013-2014:

    Mon-
    8: Dancing With the Stars
    10: Nashville

    Tue-
    8: Dancing With the Stars: Results
    9: Shark Tank
    10: Body of Proof

    Wed-
    8: The Middle
    8:30: Suburgatory
    9: Modern Family
    9:30: Knock Knock (new)
    10: Birthright (new)

    Thu-
    8: Grey’s Anatomy
    9: Revenge
    10: Rise & Fall (new)

    Fri-
    8: Last Man Standing
    8:30: Malibu Country
    9: Now What? (new)
    9:30: Crazy Gene (new)
    10: 20/20

    Sat- (midseason)

    I’ll be happy as long as HE gets to 88 for syndication.

  • TSC’s Revenge

    No one here HATES Apt 23.

    LOL! And this is LOVE???

    “Ding Dong the B—- is dead!”

     I get it. I really do. The numbers are the numbers, blah, blah, blah.  In some ways you are correct.  However, that said, Apt23 had a micro-season last year.  When it returned this year with little to no promotion, folks are ready to call it DOA after a couple of episodes.  It’s a good show and it is showing more promise.  It showed a 0.3 bump in its latest episode.  Hopefully, it won’t get an early cancellation and will get a fair amount of time to prove itself.

    “Hopefully, it won’t get an early cancellation and will get a fair amount of time to prove itself.”

    It would be very surprising if a show currently on a broadcast primetime schedule were to be pulled off the schedule before all of its ordered episodes aired.

    That said, it won’t help Apt23. It’s stone cold dead at the end of this season.

    @TSC’s Revenge: However, that said, Apt23 had a micro-season last year. When it returned this year with little to no promotion, folks are ready to call it DOA after a couple of episodes.

    Sigh. We all know that Apartment 23 is very unlikely to have a sudden surge in the ratings – if anything it’s likely to fall at this point, although the ratings are low enough for me to predict they’ll stay “stable”.

    This site isn’t about if you love/hate certain shows – it’s about if they’re likely to be renewed/cancelled going (cheesy 90s Melrose Place-ish electric guitar music interlude) BY THE NUMBERS. I like Apartment 23, but it’s going to get cancelled, barring a miracle.

    As a fan I’m hoping for a miracle, but I’m not going to get upset by someone saying the obvious.

  • NatLovin

    I really think that Happy Endings is going to end up the way of Cougar Town, where ABC Cancels it, but Sony sends it off to another channel to get syndication numbers.
    Or at least that’s what I’m hoping for.

  • Joanna Elizabeth

    HOW is the Neighbors still on air?

  • Fred

    @Nick,

    Missing Scandal? Slim chance ABC won’t renew it. Ratings are fairly consistent and performing OK for a 10:00 drama.

  • Raykov

    Happy Endings is safe as much as Cougar Town was last year. If TBS don’t save it, ABC will – even if they put it in a terrible schedule, over the summer or even don’t launch it in the USA. The show has promising syndication and as much as I know it has big international syndication (as most of ABC shows do).

  • Nick

    @Fred
    Midseason.

  • The End

    @TSC’s Revenge

    2.98 million, 1.2 18-49 is dreadful. This is why the show is going to get canceled. ABC won’t keep something drawing in 3 million viewers(Though not actual viewers). The show flopped.

  • The End

    @Joanna Elizabeth

    I honestly don’t know. The Critics at the initial screenings absolutely hated it, I predicted failure before the thing came on the air and the show is proving me wrong. That said we’re on Episode 9 of 22. Plenty of time for the show to catastrophically fail enough for me to be correct. And I usually am.

  • TSC’s Revenge

    @Bill Gorman

    That said, it won’t help Apt23. It’s stone cold dead at the end of this season.

    Hope you don’t mind if I don’t put too much stock in your predictions there Bill.  After all, last year around this time, you were listing TSC as “Certain to be Renewed”!

    Just sayin’…

  • Jennifer

    I wonder when Grey’s will stop… I still watch it because I still like some characters but I’m so saddened by Lexie and Mark’s death (+ Izzie’s departure), even if they happened for ‘good’ reasons I think the show is less good and all the drama around Cristina is exhausting and don’t get me started on the new interns… Last week’s episode was soooooooo boring!!

  • Kyle

    I love this show. ABC was asking for this to happen when they put it up against New Girl and Go On. I mean their going to renew The NEighbors????!?!?! Nielsen is the biggest joke in entertainment. I could write a thesis on that so I’ll just stop.

  • Bright

    @CenterGravity, which ones? same happened to me

    dirty sexy money, pushing daisies, men in trees, cashemere mafia, samantha who, V, pan am, gcb, no ordinary family…
