The news that Happy Endings'  woeful ratings is sorely testing my rule that shows in their third season will fall no further than a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation because of the pull of the syndication gods. Having been burned twice by another low rated Sony sitcom ('Til Death), I'm still gunshy about moving it to "likely canceled". Call me "chicken". Heck, I'll call myself "chicken". Cluck, cluck!

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    I completely disagree. I almost never want to watch a show on my own unless I have seen it from the beginning. So unless a friend has me watch a show for whatever reason(and even then i don’t get invested) I wouldn’t watch a show in its second season or later. I don’t know much about the TV ratings world, but I am positive I can’t be alone on that viewpoint.

  • Frank

    This show is really starting to find a groove. It is one of those best shows you are not watching. The cast is top notch and it is light and fun.

  • Dan

    @NE1 – Its Home Improvement but with 3 daughters instead of 3 sons and an Out Door store instead of a Tool Show.

    Is the Thursday 8/7 PM timeslot actually cursed or is it just an excuse used by people when a new show in that timeslot gets cancelled?

  • ToXiX

    Happy Endings & B in 23 to Fridays in January.

  • Fred

    @Billy martins

    That’s some shake up! ABC needs some radical maneuveres, but moving family oriented OUAT to 10:00 is not a good idea. It should remain at 8/00 .Revenge Sunday 10:00 might work. But ABC would need something strong at 9:00 possibly the growing Scandal. Although DWTS still does fine with overall viewers it skews VERY old. I think DWTS would work better on a less competitive night like Friday . But I doubt that would happen. They will leave probably leave iit on Mondays and Tuesdays. But the show needs to attract a more youthful demo, not easy .

    ABC is doing fine on Wednesday. No changes needed. The still strong Greys should stay on Thursday to launch another 10:00 drama.

    The very profitable Shark Tank can air twice a week to fill in gaps during the week. Not necessarily on Friday.

  • Ugh

    America has spoken and boy do they love CRAP! Hilarious shows like Happy Endings and Dont Trust the B are on the verge of cancellation, while Malibu Country, Last Man Standing, and The Neighbors are sitting pretty. I officially hate the world.

  • Rebecca

    I’m caught up on The Neighbors now…very funny. Not my favorite comedy of the season but pretty enjoyable (I can’t get into Suburgatory, another quirky one, but this one I like). And I like how Dan Fogelman (the writer) had the little human girl dress up as Rapunzel for the Halloween-ween episode, because that writer also wrote “Tangled” (and “Bolt” and the two “Cars” movies). Good writing and a great cast. Can’t believe how much I crack up at that show – and now it has me watching old “3rd Rock” episodes on hulu plus. Alien humor.

  • Fred

    I truly enjoy 666 PRk Ave. So deep and mesmerizing. The last new ep was the most impressive yet .
    I guess I will view it as a miniseries.

    The Middle is this seasons most consistently funny sitcom. Evey character is interesting and funny.

  • Fred

    @Rebecca

    I also don’t care for Suburgatory .
    Can’t wait for new Cougar Town eps on TBS! Now that is a funny sitcom.

  • Austin Lauran

    @Bill,

    Can the next renew/cancel index article for ABC say “The Middle is still certain to be renewed”? Please? Barely anyone talks about the show on this website, so I’d like to see the reactions of commenters.

  • John

    The Neighbors is terribly bad. The rating is OK because its a Wednesday show. Either Apartment 23 or Happy Endings is way better than The Neighbors. ABC is really good at killing better shows and keeping the worst ones.

  • Rebecca

    @Fred
    Yeah, of course I like Cougar Town too (it’s in my avatar). I don’t have TBS but I’ll stream the show online after it starts airing. Still waiting for the latest season to come out on DVD but I own the other seasons. Great ensemble show.

    @Austin Lauran
    I LOVE The Middle….it’s consistently good and often funnier than Modern Family. Hopefully it’ll be “certain to be renewed” at some point soon. It pretty much is, with all those green smiley faces.

  • Dan

    @Toxix – Thats a strong possibility about Happy Endings but will it replace LMS and MC or air at 9 following them. Both shows will air 16 episodes by March 19. Apartment 23 will have 3 episodes left and Happy Endings will have 7 episodes.

    Poll: What will happen to Happy Endings and Apartment 23 after March 19?

    1. Both series will be held until a summer burn off.
    2. Both series will move to Fridays at 9 and 9:30 to finish their seasons in late March/April after Shark Tank finishes its season or moves somewhere else.
    3. Both series will move to 8 and 8:30 after Last Man Standing and Malibu Country finish their runs.
    4. The remaining Happy Endings episodes will be held until next season, Apartment 23 will still be cancelled and get a summer burn off.

    Since Happy Endings is likely to get another season, its possible that the episodes may be held over until next season, but not likely. It’s more likely ABC burns them off over the summer whether it gets a fourth season or not. Apartment 23 is getting axed no matter what but with 3 episodes left, I’m sure ABC will air them sometime.

    I think ABC will order a few more LMS and MC episodes so instead of the comedies HE and A23 replacing them, its very likely ABC may move the remaining episodes to 9pm. Thats what I would do. We’ll see what happens.

  • ATXCountry

    @Billy Martins that’s a huge shakeup….but ABC is not moving Modern Family any time soon. Any network’s #1 show gets special treatment and retaining the timeslot you’ve dominated for the past four years is item number one.

    And it’s not time yet to blow the whistle on Grey’s Anatomy….yes it is a 9 year old drama….but it is still ABC’s #2 show. No matter what poor performing show is placed in front of it GA holds its own and has proven that it can launch new shows.

    As for the network’s #3 show (it’s new rising star), ABC again is not moving OUAT. That show is the perfect example of counter programming for football and other Sunday events.

  • Fred

    @Rebecca and Austin,

    I completely agree with you both about The Middle. Consistently funny, heartwarming, lovable etc…. Every character shines in this show. Deserves awards already. Four seasons in and better than ever.

  • Mark

    I think this year or next year maybe the last for The Middle some of the story lines are getting a vague. ABC should just end the show on a high note

  • Anthony

    Shame, SHAME. Happy Endings looks like the next great show to be cancelled?? Yet we’re living in a time where Jersey Shore and the Kardashians pull in record ratings. Welcome to Obama’s America — a land of mindless zombies.

  • Lindz

    PLEASE don’t cancel Happy Endings! It is one of my top 3 favorites, I laugh out loud every time I watch! The cast is great and the show is fun!
