CBS has debuted three new dramas every Fall since 2006-7. I'd expect them to do the same next Fall. So unless they have some schedule wizardry up their sleeves I haven't seen before (holding back Undercover Boss won't help!) they'll need to cancel three of their Fall 2012 dramas to make room for three more next Fall. With Made In Jersey gone, and Vegas a likely cancellation, that means one more Fall drama had to go.

With most of the decision making criteria for that choice hidden from the public, the news last week that CSI:NY would end its season in February to make room for Golden Boy tips my prediction for it into "likely canceled".

For the time being, I'm keeping both The Good Wife and The Mentalist as toss ups for renewal or cancellation. However unlikely it may be based on recent history (I believe The Unit in 2006 was the last CBS spring rookie to get a renewal), a renewal for Golden Boy would require another Fall 2012 drama to be canceled to make room for it in the Fall of 2013. I'll wait to see its spring ratings before jumping to conclusions. Commenters may feel free to jump at their leisure.

Why are Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods "certain to be renewed"? Both dramas are in their third seasons and need a fourth to reach the "magic" 88 episodes for stripped syndication. Both are "certain to be renewed" for their fourth seasons next year. Read more about that here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

CSI MIAMI WOULD HAVE DONE BETTER DEN NY :( TO BAD .. BUT GLAD TO SEE BLUE BLOODS DOING WELL

  • Jeff (Canada)

Cancel CSI:NY and Golden Boy along with Vegas, Partners and Made in Jersey and keep the rest. CBS has it easy this year.

  • THE OLD MAN

How about “The Mentalist” goes to the CW for a Nikita/Mentalist Fri?

  • Franko

CSI: NY will be canceled, hopefully along with Golden boy and Vegas. The Mentalist should move to Fridays along with Blue bloods.

  • Nick

I was hoping this would give Vegas a chance to survice.

  • Just Desserts

Elementary is teetering off the edge and even the Superbowl can’t save it.

    LONG LIVE THE GOOD WIFE!

  • chris

Why would CBS want to cancel CSI NY? It is a veteran show pulling identical #’s to younger show Blue Bloods outperforming it sometimes. Not to mention The critical darling The good wife pulls the same crap numbers on Sundays at 9 leading into to a dismal Mentalist at 10 PM. Atleast Mentalist had the demos last season and good ratings, thats of course until CBS messed up their schedule and placed good wife as a leadin. I do not hate any of the shows, just stating the obvious. The good wife has met its 4 seasons and now can see itself into syndication. The fans should consider themselves lucky, although I hear it is a great show. Blue Bloods is in the same boat as NY so I wouldn’t give up on that show yet especially if Golden Boy doesn’t hold up well.

CBS has made dull decisions this season.. Elementary and Vegas are not hits and Mentalist, Good Wife, Made in Jersey, and partners are all going down the drain ratings wise. H50 and the Monday Comedy lineup has been down all season long as well. Although H50 has slowly and I mean slowly trying to rebound, The comedies are not horrific in the ratings just on a downward slump. CBS should worry about a lot of other shows than just pointing the finger at CSI NY.

@ The old man.. It wouldn’t be a bad thing for CBS to pawn a show from their network onto the CW friday Night lineup anything is worth a try.

  • THE OLD MAN

    @ Chris

Anything to save THE GOOD WIFE!

  • Nope

    save THE MENTALIST

  • steve

Last year they had 18 episodes stretch out untill may this year because they had golden boy to fit in couldn’t do that so I personally would not read much into the fact its ending in february but if had to guess which one of the 3 is to go it would be csi ny but we’ve been saying that for a few years now.

  • Austin

BRING BACK CSI MIAMI. IT WOULD HAVE DONE WAY BETTER THAN CSI NY. CSI NY CANT EVEN GET 10 MILLION VIEWERS. WITH CSI MIAMI, IT WOULD BE IN THE 10-11 MILLION VIEWER RANGE. STILL BETTER THEN CSI NY!!! BRING BACK CSI MIAMI!! WE MISS YOU HORATIO WITH THOSE SHADES!!!

  • Ricky

@Nope: Agreed. CBS putting it on Sundays at 10 was a dumb move, because now we the fans actually are going to have to campaign hard to try and save the show.

The Elimination Game: now with All-Stars! http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/12/09/play-the-elimination-game-page-2/160888/comment-page-4/#comments

    @chris

I’ll just remind you that, last Sunday, The Mentalist scored a series low not after The Good Wife but after the much higher rated The Amazing Race. That’s for The Good Wife being responsible for The Mentalist’s problems. Also, I’m sure you must have noticed The Mentalist’s steadily declining ratings between seasons 2 and 4 on Thursdays (but maybe it was the lead-in’s fault ?), so a miracle clearly wasn’t in the cards for season 5, even on Thursdays.

Then, I’ll also remind you that, while not being good, The Good Wife’s numbers are currently higher than CSI : NY’s ones. And don’t tell me The Good Wife would do worse on Fridays : it’s probable but not sure.
With its age, rising costs per episodes beyond the first 100 and unavoidable contracts negociations every 1 or 2 years, CSI:NY is clearly the most expensive of the 3 endangered shows. Let’s be honest : after two almost series finales and weakening ratings, it doesn’t need nor deserve a 10th season. Really, only 2 years ago, Ghost Whisperer got cancelled with slightly better ratings after only 5 seasons, and rising costs were cited as a reason !

I’m not saying The Good Wife and The Mentalist really deserve an extra season, but they certainly deserve it more than CSI:NY. So if CBS is to cancel only one of those 3, CSI:NY is by far the most logical choice.
Let’s not forget CBS’s Medium and Numbers, which both got shortened seasons, left the air prematurely (January 2011 and March 2010) never to return. CSI:NY finds itself in exactly the same situation this season : clearly not a good sign. CBS is not pointing the finger at anything or anyone… It’s Bill who is pointing its finger at CSI:NY, downgrading it to ‘Likely canceled’ !

And finally, on a subject which sadly has absolutely nothing to do with renewal decisions : CBS has become overcrowded, infected with procedurals, dare I say, and with yet another procedural – NCIS:Whatever – waiting in the wings, I’d rather have The Good Wife (some procedural elements with trials, but so varied and so cleverly written and interwoven with characters’s lives that it actually doesn’t feel like a procedural) renewed than CSI’s 2nd spinoff.

  • Bad Wolf

    @Austin

In a fair and logical world, total viewers numbers would count. But we’re not living in such a world : only the the young (adults 18-49) matters.

“BRING BACK CSI MIAMI. IT WOULD HAVE DONE WAY BETTER THAN CSI NY. CSI NY CANT EVEN GET 10 MILLION VIEWERS. WITH CSI MIAMI, IT WOULD BE IN THE 10-11 MILLION VIEWER RANGE. STILL BETTER THEN CSI NY!!! BRING BACK CSI MIAMI!! WE MISS YOU HORATIO WITH THOSE SHADES!!!”

    10-11 million? Pffft!!!!

They should bring back Gunsmoke! Way better than all the dreck on their schedule today! It probably drew 60 million+ viewers in its heyday.

“The good wife pulls the same crap numbers on Sundays at 9 leading into to a dismal Mentalist at 10 PM. Atleast Mentalist had the demos last season and good ratings, thats of course until CBS messed up their schedule and placed good wife as a leadin”

@Chris…oh please!! Do not use the excuse that the Good Wife is a poor lead in for The Mentalist. This week’s numbers prove that! The Mentalist performed worse this week yet it had a strong lead in from the Amazing Race finale…enough said!

  • THE OLD MAN

What would the viewers be for a 40.3 rating I wonder

  • Mrs Florrick

Obviously, I’ll be happy if CSI:NY is canceled and The Golden Boy is also a flop coz that will give The Good Wife a chance for another season. All I care about is getting to have at least 100 episodes of The Good Wife :)

CSI:NY has had it’s time. It can go to bed. Besides, like Bad Wolf said, CBS has to many procedurals, and it’s obvious the upcoming NCIS spinoff will do well, so that’s another one you can add to the long list of procedurals. The Good Wife provides some variety from the usual CBS procedurals, not to mention it is critically acclaimed and such an excellent drama. Too bad America would rather have much of the same procedural crap airing everyday.

  • The Yipster

Let’s not forget that CBS is perfectly capable of cancelling a veteran show in CSI: NY (just like how they cancelled CSI: Miami). I’m not a fan of CSI: NY, but I think CBS should announce the show’s season finale in Feb. as the series finale. That way, CBS would give the CSI: NY fans closure. They didn’t do that with the CSI: Miami fans, and I didn’t agree with that.

    @ THE OLD MAN
I don’t think that’s a bad idea. I kind of like the idea of a Nikita/Mentalist CW pair on Fridays. But in my opinion, that sounds too good to be true and I don’t think CBS will do that.
