CBS has debuted three new dramas every Fall since 2006-7. I'd expect them to do the same next Fall. So unless they have some schedule wizardry up their sleeves I haven't seen before (holding back Undercover Boss won't help!) they'll need to cancel three of their Fall 2012 dramas to make room for three more next Fall. With Made In Jersey gone, and Vegas a likely cancellation, that means one more Fall drama had to go.

With most of the decision making criteria for that choice hidden from the public, the news last week that CSI:NY would end its season in February to make room for Golden Boy tips my prediction for it into "likely canceled".

For the time being, I'm keeping both The Good Wife and The Mentalist as toss ups for renewal or cancellation. However unlikely it may be based on recent history (I believe The Unit in 2006 was the last CBS spring rookie to get a renewal), a renewal for Golden Boy would require another Fall 2012 drama to be canceled to make room for it in the Fall of 2013. I'll wait to see its spring ratings before jumping to conclusions. Commenters may feel free to jump at their leisure.

Why are Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods "certain to be renewed"? Both dramas are in their third seasons and need a fourth to reach the "magic" 88 episodes for stripped syndication. Both are "certain to be renewed" for their fourth seasons next year. Read more about that here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Elementary should not go to mondays, it will fall to vegas levels in no time. Unless CBS is willing to move LA or has a very solid pilot they think can have the hour they are better off leaving hawaii there

  • Nick

    @omabin

Elementary definitely should go to Mondays at 10.
    A) Person of Interest needs to be free to launch a new drama. It’s their second-best 9 pm drama, third-best overall, and only show up year-to-year. Next year, the Thu@10 slot may be the network’s most valuable launching pad, except for maybe the post-NCIS slot.
    B) No other slots would be open except for Sun&Fri death slots.
    C) Even if Elementary does fall to Vegas levels, it’d probably be safe with those ratings for a few more years, as it’s CBS owned, and we all know CBS’s track record with syndicating its shows (yes, syndication is probably a factor even this early).

  • omabin

    @Nick,

I agree that the post POI spot should be put to better use, but with that argument you just made CBS would simply be better of canceling elementary than giving it a pity renewal for 4 seasons, especially on such a high profile night as monday in which it will have steeper competition and no compatible lead in support. I think they could try to send it to sundays though, it would go well with the mentalist, though that show is also dying.

Everyone is keen on sending H50 to sundays, but elementary would do just worse in its slot. They are better sticking with 50 and let it regain some audience than stick it on Sundays on its 3rd season for a show that will die on its 2nd with no likely coming back.

The superbowl could change all of this, of course, but I doubt it.

  • NE1

Vegas needs to go, I gave it a shot and was horrified by how bad it was. The actors couldn’t even say their lines straight.

  • Andoni

I thought relative ratings were the ones that mattered. I mean, it’s doing good so far, isn’t it?

  • Michelle

I hope CSI NY doesn’t get canceled, I love the show. I want at least one more season.

  • Petar Ivanov

    @Nick and @omabin

I like you thinking guys. You are smart.

What about that TGW if survive will be moved to friday and Elementary at 9 Sundays looks like best option.

I agree. And TBBT if contunie to grow too that will make all thursday block better,

  • Petar Ivanov

If CL Moms move to CBS than one of TAHM ot HIMYM will end this season and other one next season. TAHM is real image nightmare for CBS but CBS will want one more year. HIMYM is other story. Think HIMYM will end this year.

And STOP moving things around in your fantasy schedules. CBS IS MOST CONCERVETIVE NETWORK in big 4! This is not FOX guys. End of the world can came and they still won’t move things around. I don’t know from how many years but from my expirience in tv by the numbers CBS are most discipline and follow the rules. Their(CBS) rules are like constitution for tham. Bill can tell us from when is that policy. I think TV by the numbers can write CBS rules so people to remmember tham.

CSI:NY should be renewed. It has gotten far better since they started doing B stories involving the characters. The recent one with Adam was especially good. What should be cancelled is The Mentalist. It is beginning to look like the Red John story will never be resolved as long as the series continues and all we will get in one red herring after another. Worst of all, the various character stories have ended and nothing has replaced them. Cho and Summer is ended. Rigsby and van Pelt is ended. Rigsby’s relationship with the lawyer just ended with a one line explanation and his kid has vanished. This show has totally stalled out.

  • chezmoi

In terms of costs, what proportion is salaries paid to the main actors? I presume this cost for CSI: NY are higher than for many CBS dramas. It has not arrived yet in the UK so I cannot comment on storylines, but CSI: Miami is missed by me even though its fianl series of storylines were weak. Perhaps one final season of Horatio goes to New York might liven things up for a final season!

  • Ryan

I Think that the at least give CSI NY another Season, just like they did with CSI Miami

    It should look like this

    Monday
    Elementary
    2 Broke Girls
    Mike & Molly

    Tuesday
    NCIS
    NCIS: LA
    Criminal Minds

    Wednesday
    CSI
    CSI NY
    Hawaii Five-0

    Thursday
    Blue Bloods
    Two and a Half Men
    NEW NCIS LA SPIN OFF

    Friday
    Undercover Boss
    The Mentalist
    Blue Bloods

    Sunday
    60 Minutes
    Survivor
    Amazing Race
    The Good Wife

  • dryr

The only version I NEVER watched. Several seasons of the other two, never a single ep of this one and I’m surprised it lasted the longest.

  • TheFrenchGuu

    CBS should try this.

    MONDAY

8:30 – New Comedy / Rules of Engagement
    9:00 – 2 Broke Girls
    9:30 – Mike & Molly

    TUESDAY
    8:00 – Survivor
    9:00 – NCIS: Los Angeles
    10:00 – Criminal Minds

    WEDNESDAY
    8:00 – New Drama
    9:00 – NCIS
    10:00 – CSI

    THURSDAY
8:00 – The Big Bang Theory
    8:30 – Two and a Half Men
    9:00 – New Drama
    10:00 – Person of Interest

    FRIDAY
    8:00 – New Drama / Undercover Boss
    9:00 – CSI: NY / New Drama
    10:00 – Blue Bloods

    SATURDAY
    8:00 – Repeat
    9:00 – Repeat
    10:00 – 48 Hours

    SUNDAY
    8:00 – The Amazing Race
    9:00 – The Good Wife
    10:00 – The Mentalist

Nothing chance for Monday. Moving Criminal Minds to Tuesday will help the night (no more flops at 10).
On Wednesday TV’s #1 Drama will increase the Numbers of

  • TheFrenchGuu

    Sorry !

On Wednesday, NCIS (TV’s #1 Show) will increase to numbers of CSI.
Person of Interest moves to 10 because between Two and a Half Men and POI the New Drama will be a hit.
Nothing changes on Friday or Sunday.

  • Petar Ivanov

    @TheFrenchGuu
I am sorry, but your schedule is worst i saw for now. And i see some really bad schedules here. A lot of incompetent people. From where to start…..

Are you crazy or just stuped? I mean you move almost all shows and stay the same only day that is CBS worst day – sunday.

You know that moving hit shows around is not just like playing with the kids, right? These shows need to be promoted almost like new shows, they will need a lot of time, resources, money etc.

Premiering new dramas before POI and NCIS give you award worst TV schedule of the year. Only one that can beat you is man who will try to premiere new sitcom before TBBT. Anyone………………

  • CBSviewer

I have a best idea for CBS Schedule:

    Monday
    8:00 – How I Met Your Mother
    8:30 – NEW COMEDY
    9:00 – 2 Broke Girls
    9:30 – Mike & Molly
    10:00 – NCIS: Los Angeles

    Tuesday
    8:00 – NCIS
    9:00 – NEW NCIS
    10:00 – NEW DRAMA

    Wednesday
    8:00 – Survivor
    9:00 – Criminal Minds
    10:00 – CSI

    Thursday
8:00 – The Big Bang Theory
    8:30 – Two and a Half Men
    9:00 – Person of Interest
    10:00 – NEW DRAMA

    Friday
    8:00 – CSI: NY / Undercover Boss
    9:00 – The Good Wife
    10:00 – Blue Bloods

    Saturday
    8:00 – Crimetime Saturday
    9:00 – Crimetime Saturday
    10:00 – 48 Hours

    Sunday
    7:00 – 60 Minutes
    8:00 – The Amazing Race
    9:00 – Hawaii Five-0
    10:00 – The Mentalist

CBS should not premiere new Shows on Friday or Sunday but premiere two on Tuesday after the Original NCIS like they did in 2009 with NCIS: Los Angeles and The Good Wife.

  • CBSviewer

This schedule is, of course, if CBS doesn’t Renew any of their New Dramas.

  • Red John

The Mentalist is one of the best written shows to come on network TV in a long time. Why CBS would move it to Sunday night where it contantly comes on after 10pm due to the football game (at least on the east coast) is beyond me. Move it off of Sunday to a better night and the ratings would be much better. Now, everybody is recording it via DVR/TIVO because it comes on so late on Sunday.

  • Mark

I could see elementary (I think the ratings will stay around 0.85-0.89 on the idex) moving to Monday Night and Hawaii Five-O moving to the Sunday Night Death Trap good wife to friday as lead in to Blue Bloods and CSI New York, The Mentalist, and Vegas gone. Unforgettable back to the lineup next fall on Friday Night
