Often my partner in crime writes about something before I get around to it, and that's what happened with The Cleveland Show. It's the only one of Fox's animated shows without an order for episodes beyond this season, and with the extra lead time needed for animated production it may have already passed the date needed to get episodes for next season into production. At the end of this season it will already have 88 episodes, so the syndication gods are not compelled to step in to save it. For that reason it's now a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation.

Raising Hope is predicted as "certain to be renewed" even with its somewhat weak early ratings. While the syndication gods ruling Fox aren't quite as predictable as those ruling CBS, it would take nothing short of a cataclysm to prevent the show from getting a fourth season. Read more about it here.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Renewed. The show was recently picked up for syndication on Adult Swim. I’ll get at least one more season. Seth Macfarlane shows does well on Adult Swim, which is why American Dad has gotten renewed since season 6 even though it was close to getting cancelled in season 6.

  • Justin121

FOX needs some drastic moves like

Glee – Goodwin Games – Raising Hope on Tuesday

Idol – New Girl – New comedy on Thursday

Other than that, with only 10 hours of primetime, 2 on Friday and 3 taken by X-Idol, they don’t have much to work on.

When should we hear more about pilots?

  • David Howell

Lack of renewal announcement to date + lack of a real episode backlog* + replacement show having been ordered = likely cancellation for Cleveland Show.

Having said that, if Murder Police airs in the fall, that’s the lag time needed to allow a final 13 for Cleveland Show in spring 2014. There’s apparently 18 episodes left to air this season according to a comment elsewhere (88 in the can, #71 airs this week), and they’ll have to be pretty light on reruns to get 17 more out of it in the spring.

  • Dan

@David Howell – While thats true, FOX could always only air 19 episodes total this season (including 3 that were produced from season 3) and combine the remaining 5 episodes with a 13 episode 5th season and still air Murder Police by midseason. 13 Murder Police episodes with 18 Cleveland show episodes could very well timeshare just like how Bob’s Burgers/Allen Gregory/Cleveland Show and Napoleon Dynamite timeshared last season. It just means American Dad might get preempted a couple of nights. FOX could always use more Cleveland eps if they have the leftovers, otherwise they would air 25 episodes this season total, and if they aired 6 by this sunday, its unlikely 19 episodes will air from January-May.

The Cleveland Show currently has 90 episodes produced.

22 produced for season 1. (21 aired during season 1)
22 produced for season 2. (22 aired during season 2)
24 produced for season 3. (22 aired during season 3)
22 produced for season 4. (25 aired during season 4 if show gets axed)

By combining 13 more season 5 episodes with some leftovers from this season, FOX can very easily get the episode order over 100 for syndication, as well as create a full season 5 without having to end the show until May 2014. I think the show will get a short fifth season in the next few months.

  • Dan

@Justin121 – I think FOX is pretty predictable at this point. It seems the 2 hour comedy block is here to stay no matter how low the ratings go. And it seems Glee will stay on Thursdays since it seems easier to air the remaining 12 episodes in blocks of 6 (January 17-February 21) and then from April-May giving Idol some 2 hour time on Thursdays.

There doesn’t seem to be anymore surprises this year. Sunday nights look the same for the rest of the season, Bones and The Following will air until May. Goodwin Games will replace Ben & Kate in March/April and Touch will air all 13 episodes on Fridays with Kitchen Nightmares after Fringe ends.

  • Oliver

If Fox wanted another 13 episodes to get to 100 then they would have ordered them already.

I’m not completely ruling out Fox putting it back into production if it becomes a hit on Adult Swim but it’s looking pretty unlikely at this point. My guess is that Fox see more upside potential in creating new shows.

  • Dan

@Oliver – Maybe FOX wanted to wait to make a decision by seeing how the ratings for these first 6 episodes performed. Ordering only 13 episodes back in May when Family Guy and American Dad got new seasons would look like a death sentence but now it makes more sense. Its easier to end the show now by saying, OK we don’t need all 22 episodes for season 5 since we still have a few Season 4 leftovers. Its how Futurama and Family Guy both ended originally. FOX has 3 options still.

    1. Put the show back into production for a full 22 episode fifth season (Extremely unlikely).
    2. Order 13 more episodes for season 5 by February to be combined with a few Season 4 episodes so the show would have a good amount of episodes for season 5. (Likely)
    3. Cancel the series and air 25 episodes total for this season. (possibly)

Also at this point on The Mindy Project, FOX is going to want to save this one so I expect to see them put 1 or 2 episodes on post Idol in March to give it a boost.

they need to switch times to get it up again

    7.30 american dad

    8.00 the simpsons

    8.30 the cleveland show

    9.00 family guy

    9.30 bob burger

  • Dan

@Mike – I think eventually Bob’s Burgers may get the 9:30 slot but right now American Dad is there because it has done so well for years. I always thought it would be better for The Cleveland Show to follow the show that it was spun from just like Private Practice followed Grey’s or NCIS LA followed NCIS. Cleveland seems to be the weak link so thats why its moved to 7:30. 2 years ago (December 2010) American Dad was considered on the bubble because it was the 7:30 show but it bounced back.

  • CBSviewer

Season 25 was announced as the last for The Simpsons ?

  • iggy agrimotor

When should we hear more about pilots?

In May when they’re picked up to series.

In April when Deadline reports that a dozen pilots are testing well and have plenty of good buzz — and, a week later, reports that those same pilots are dead meat.

In late January through early February when the networks order pilot episodes for about 10% of their scripts.

  • tommie

@Dan – I’m not sure if Cleveland got a 22 episode order for the fourth production cycle as I can only find 20 registered for this cycle.

Irregardless, I think Cleveland’s days are numbered unless Murder Police disappoints in pre-production.

  • Dan

@Tommie – Well 20 episodes would make sense because Season 3 had 24 so I guess if Season 4 has 20 produced episodes than Cleveland has 88 episodes. It is possible that All those episodes will air this season but we should find out within the next month. Fox needs to make a decision on The Cleveland Show just like CBS has to make a decision on How I Met Your Mother.

  • Shawn

First off, I am surprised Bob’s Burgers has been renewed. The “Pat” like older daughter is borrrrring, the son’s voice is like nails on a chalkboard, the youngest daughter, I want to strangle with those stupid bunny ears. And when the wife gets, crazy, and overstimulated I wanna dunk her head in the deep frier.

Clevel- CANCEL IT!!!! I hate Junior’s voice ( I won’t say anymore than that about him ) even Cleveland is becoming annoying and has anyone else realized that he is becoming more like Peter?? I love Family Guy and American Dad. But not a fan of Cleveland.

    Mindy Project- CANCEL CANCEL CANCEL!!!
