As of this writing The Killing is still not officially resurrected for a third season despite any reports to the contrary that you may have read. But the production team had been mobilizing in preparation for an official pick-up from AMC. The one-word question that news generally elicited was: why?
The theory I saw posited by many that made the most sense to me was that even though AMC had picked up Hell On Wheels for a third season, when the muckity mucks on the production team quit, the show's future was in limbo. AMC needed something to fill that void in case things didn't move forward with Hell On Wheels, and that was The Killing.
But with a new showrunner on board, Hell On Wheels is no longer in limbo. It's pick-up of 10 episodes is officially official. What does that mean for The Killing? Is there a 'The Killing: Now More Canceled Than Ever!" post coming in the future? If the theory outlined above was behind the talks of its revival, one might speculate the news about Hell On Wheels isn't good news for The Killing.
If a third season of The Killing is not to be, that news will certainly get out. But don't be surprised if there's no official statement from AMC. While in a somewhat rare move AMC did officially make a statement about cancelling The Killing, it hasn't officially commented on its revival yet.
Changes This Week:
Besides the update to Hell On Wheels, this week's other changes all involved TV Land shows -- The Soul Man and The Exes were renewed while Retired At 35 was canceled.

Most of the shows on the list have statuses - if there isn't a status that just means there has been no announcement at the time of the most recent update (see date at top of post and/or above the table below).
If you find errors or omissions (excluding unscripted shows, kids shows or shows that have not aired yet) please note them in the comments and I'll update the table.
Notes:
- Kids shows and Adult Swim shows are not on the list below
- I've seen some squawking about shows on the list below that are owned/created by networks/studios outside of the United States. For purposes of this list, which focuses on U.S. cable networks, I'm only focused on where the shows air here in U.S.
- Shows from overseas like Downton Abbey & Sherlock that air on PBS in the U.S. are not in the list below (PBS is not a cable network), though ITV has renewed Downton Abbey for a 4th season in the UK which will ultimately air in the states.
- Despite some current inconsistencies in the table below, I do not intend to track episode orders or return dates specifically in this table at this time. The primary goal of the table is: what's been renewed, what's been canceled, and what shows fates haven't been decided yet.

Robert, what a great compilation. I love when you do these. I know you said you only do scripted shows here but I would love to see a list like this for shows on Discovery, Animal Planet, TLC, etc.
I was happy that the Hell on Wheels drama got sorted out, and will be back watching it next summer. But if I had to pick one or the other, I would have chosen The Killing. I realize the show was creatively a mess, but the cast was so good, and there’s so much potential, where I feel a lot of Hell on Wheels’ potential died with a character in last season’s finale. Here’s hoping I can watch both though!
Love the Killing but come on,one way or the other give us a yes or no AMC please
@DeanW
Likely hardball negotiations. No one knew the show was going to blow up. The producers and actors are going to want much bigger share of the profits. We will hear about renewal after they figure out the money.
My predictions for the unknowns- (I’m not doing foreign imports or shows I don’t know the ratings of)
The Walking Dead: I think you know
Alphas: Likely Cancellation
Leverage: Likely Renewal
Hot in Cleveland: Certain Renewal
Happily Divorced: Likely Renewal
@Brian: thanks. Though I know there are folks who’d appreciate it, I’m certain this list will never expand to unscripted shows. I couldn’t keep up with the unscripted fare just on the Discovery owned networks, let alone Bravo, Syfy, History, truTV, MTV etc.
The Killing is so awful, and the new AMC show “Low Winter Sun” sounds so promising. I hope they just ditch Killing and never look back again.
Make up your minds. Kill it or don’t.
Please, don’t cancel again!!
@Robert
How about this: Put a disclaimer saying that the list doesn’t track unscripted shows, but that if you ask around in the comments, someone without anything better to do will probably find out for you. Ok?
Silvit
True Blood will have 10 episode order in 2013 after that who knows.
First time poster here.

The Killing was rather awesome *IF* watched on DVD, seeing the 2 seasons over the course of a week or two. It was slow but with this method it was like reading a good book.
Since the two seasons resolved the case, as great as the cast was, I’d prefer they didn’t renew the show. Or if they do, they should commit to enough episodes to wrap things up.
Yeah, I’m not bitter at all over 666PA and Last Resort… *eyeroll*
This list is actually great! Also, it’s not included here, but Brickleberry from CMDY is also renewed for a 2nd season 10 episodes.
What could they possibly do with hell on wheels…
Huldu
What do you mean?
crazy.
Next season of Burn Notice could be the last?.I mean with only 13 episodes.
What’s up with this 10 episode garbage?
HBO, Showtime used to be 13 episodes then it went down to 12 and now a lot of them are 10? Watch 10 episodes and then wait 9 1/2 months for a new season.
USA’s got it right show 6,7 episodes then take a break for a few months then another 6 or 7
But hey, I guess it’s better than in the UK. Only 4 episodes of Luther? Ahhhh, I’ll take what I can get especially if they do a spin off for Alice!
Hell on Wheels>The Killing anyway!
If I had a choice for a scripted cable TV series needing to be canned, it would be “South Park”. The show may be renewed through Season 20, but I should see it wrap up its run after Season 20. SP helped put Comedy Central on the map, and any program that helped put a cable channel on the map has to end its run sometime.
