via press release:

Opposite CBS with its NFL overrun-fueled lineup (Steelers-Cowboys) including the 3-hour season finale of Survivor: Philippines and NBC with another big NFL game (New England-San Francisco), ABC outdrew Fox on the night by nearly 1.0 million viewers

During the 7 o’clock hour, ABC’s repeat America’s Funniest Home Videos more than doubled the audience of Fox’s animated comedies (The Cleveland Show/The Cleveland Show) and also led by 8% among Adults 18-49.

  • In Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, the Christmas-themed AFHV marked the show’s strongest repeat performance in 1 year – since 12/18/11 and 12/11/11, respectively.

From 8-9pm, ABC’s special encore broadcast of Wipeout (Deck the Balls) drew more viewers than Fox’s first-run Christmas-themed comedies (The Simpsons/Bob’s Burgers).

  • Wipeout was up from its most-recent repeat airing (on 8/9/12) by 6% in Total Viewers and by 9% in Adults 18-49.

Up against fierce competition from 9-11pm from NBC’s Sunday Night Football and CBS’ Survivor finale, ABC’s The Bachelorette: Ashley and J.P.’s Wedding saw its overall audience surge by 16% from its first hour to its second hour.  The special also built by double-digit percentages from its first to second hour across all key Women demographics:  W18-34 (+10%), W18-49 (+27%) and W25-54 (+13%).

    Well this is just embarassing.

  • CenterGravity

I see that Spin City is still alive and well on ABC….

  • Fred

So ABC suffers its worst Sunday in my memory and they put out a positive spin.
    Somehow not funny but sad.
First time I ever stated that here.

  • RJ

FOX also had a mix of repeat and original programming.

  • Samunto

This is just embarassing and sad on a high level. It’s outright pathetic and not funny.
Seriously, these ABC PR people are always high on some illegal mind-altering substances!

  • American

I was wondering how they were going to spin this Sunday.

  • Fakeem

Here In Philly, Fox went with the church service in Newtown at around 7:10pm. That’s probably why the line-up was low low-rated.

  • Fake Me Out

I hate it when someone (Samunto) uses all the good words I wanted to use …

The PR people may be high but this release hits a new low … almost as low as ABCs ratings were last night. But I can’t totally blame the PR folks since they receive direction from network management.

Will they ever learn that sometimes the best PR is check your mouth shut and your head low and maybe no one will notice you came in dead last even against the Spanish net and (if comments in the ratings post are accurate) Fox that didn’t air as scheduled on the east coast. I’m sure they were also crushed by various cable channels as well as the Yule log where available.

  • Dan

@Fred – Its not just sad because the numbers were bad, its sad because ABC was airing against a Presidential address about a school shooting. And they’re putting a spin on this.
