Definitions:
DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs.
Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.
Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate
Until the 2009-2010 season, we used a show's LIVE program rating or viewership as the base upon which the LIVE+7 day DVR viewing was added. Now, the press seems to be standardizing around using LIVE+SAME DAY DVR viewing as the base for the calculations, so that's what we do now as well.

@Beth: the easiest way is this: if you don’t know, you can be 100% sure that you don’t!
I’ve heard that cable and other television access providers collect information about the viewing habits of their subscribers. Do you know if any of this information ever influences network programming decisions?
Tom: if you’re talking about set top box data it might influence decisions made by local affiliates about local programming, but there’s no evidence it’s influenced national network primetime shows. But I expect lots of national networks use it in addition to, but not instead of Nielsen data. One big issue with that data is advertisers want to know who in the household was watching – something Nielsen provides but the set top box data doesn’t.
@Holly and Robert
Okay, thanks.
Thanks Robert! Always appreciate an in-depth post; the P2+ rating really clears stuff up (thought unfortunately, I realize that’s the data I’m looking for in order to do a more realistic comparison).
But I now realize I had a few things backwards. I stumbled back to this post (http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/09/02/whats-a-tv-rating-and-who-is-it-dating-2012-13-edition/147028/) and I realize my confusion on viewers vs households has really been keeping me back
. Thanks for the info, I think working with your last comment will work for my useless calculations!
Wow TVD is up alot in the Live +7 ratins and so is Arrow too. Thanks Robert for the Arrow ratins.
and it allot of people did watch Super Natural that week but less people watched it live.
Yeah thanks for Arrow.
Revolution is a beast in DVR viewing.
I DVR everything I watch. I watch the commercials because I forget it is DVR. I also will watch a commercials that I find entertaining like JAKE from State Farm or Discount Double Check. Really liked the Volts wagon Rocket Man by Elton John commercial.
Then I remember I can fast forward. The advertisers really need to know this information, Hopefully they will figure it out and realize the majority of people DVR their favorite shows 20 minutes in and then watch commercial
free. The advertisers need to put their products in the show or have the actors or writers mention a a little blurb. They had Aaron on Revolution refer to turning the power on, and buying the world a coke. It was a great line.
@Bill or Robert, just out of curiosity, do you know what the total number of viewers was for The Vampire Diaries?
