We're into the holiday season for the Renew / Cancel Index and this post before the holiday break gives readers a chance to pick which shows they'd cancel were they a network programmer. You can vote as many times as you'd like, pick as many as you'd like. I've included every show, even canceled ones, so that no one feels left out!

Scheduling note: The Renew / Cancel Index will return with new Indexes and predictions on January 8, 2013 and will then only use the ratings since December 31, 2013 for its calculations for the remainder of the season. Expect prediction changes in the first weeks of 2013.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

With LR, 666, & PP already cancelled I’d add Apt 23, Neighbors, and Nashville to the list.

Apt 23 is just waiting to be officially cancelled. Neighbors is still ABC’s weakest Wednesday comedy so unless it ends up on Friday somehow I can’t see the upside of keeping it unless ABC has no sitcom pilots for next fall. Nashville is doing ok but if I were making the decision I’d cut the show unless it starts to increase a little in the ratings.

Everything else at the moment I would keep.

  • Lee

    Hi, Bill-

    Just a minor correction.

I looked at all of the network prediction lists; each one has the following statement:

“…will return with new Indexes and predictions on January 8, 2012…”

I assume the year at the end (for each network list) should be 2013?

  • JC

    @Ram510

That is because they have shifted a lot of the focus to Molly Ephraim’s character which is fine fine by me! I still could have done without the cast changes and the fast aging

  • Justin

    Don’t Trust the B

  • s0303

apt 23, happy endings, the neighbors…and of course the ones already cancelled….

  • Bookworm

Outside of the ones that are already cancelled, I say Apt.23 and Nashville.
The Neighbors goes to a new night.

  • David

The Neighbors, Last Man Standing, Malibu Country, Grey’s Anatomy, and Private Practice would be goners. Nashville and Scandal could go either way.

  • Crown

I don’t watch any ABC shows so I won’t vote.

  • Castillions

Why would anyone vote for Castle, tho? That show is awesome!!

  • Richard Steven Hack

Cancel everything but Castle and Revenge. :-) OUAT, eh, maybe leave it, mostly only because of Robert Carlyle.

All the family dramas, drive a stake through them! Boring! :-)

Last Resort had potential, but they blew it big time by concentrating on the wrong side of the premise, the idiotic notion of a renegade sub, instead of the conspiracy behind it. It’s deservedly canceled.

  • Matthew

    Keep:
    Modern Family
    Suburgatory
    Grey’s Anatomy
    Scandal
    Once Upon A Time
    Revenge
    Last Man Standing

    Bubble:
    -Happy Endings
    -Castle
    -Malibu County
-Last Resort (dif. time slot change)
    -All Midseason shows

    Cancel:
    -666 Park Avenue
    -Private Practice
    -Apt 23
    -The Neighbors

  • Tom

I’d kill both the Tuesday and Friday comedy blocks. The Tuesday ratings are terrible; the Fridays ratings aren’t terrible, but I need the room.
I’d keep the current surviving dramas, though some may get 13 episode orders to start.

I’d move DWTSR to 8pm and air two dramas afterward.
I’d move The Middle and The Neighbors to Friday, in delayed start spackle mode.
I’d move Suburgatory to 8pm, then run new comedies at 8:30 and 9:30 (unless Tools or Live somehow sticks, then I’d air that at 8:30).

  • CenterGravity

    I don’t trust that B

  • Fred

I will miss 666 Park Ave the most.
Anyone I know that watches it (admittingly only 5 people)are hopelessly addicted.
Great cast, plot and production. Greatly improved sinced the mediocre pilot.

HOW DARE YOU! Last Resort was the most important show on television this year! It had vision you couldn’t comprehend with the entirety of your brain focused solely on trying to understand the show! You’re a victim of the very pablum you pretend to preach against! You will burn with the rest of the slobbering procession of fools when the government begins its purging process all because those few of us with the power to change the heart of the masses were thwarted by posers like yourself!
