We're into the holiday season for the Renew / Cancel Index and this post before the holiday break gives readers a chance to pick which shows they'd cancel were they a network programmer. You can vote as many times as you'd like, pick as many as you'd like. I've included every show, even canceled ones, so that no one feels left out!

Scheduling note: The Renew / Cancel Index will return with new Indexes and predictions on January 8, 2013 and will then only use the ratings since December 31, 2013 for its calculations for the remainder of the season. Expect prediction changes in the first weeks of 2013.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012

  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I’m simply standing up for the future of America, a future that you continue to drool down your chin w/ your blatant refusal to think.

    ABC Scripted Average: 2.2

I’ve compiled all off the scripted ratings data for ABC this season. All of the seasonal averages listed below (and the scripted average) are up-to-date as of Sunday, December 16, 2012.

    Shows Above Average:

    Modern Family – 4.7 (-)
    Grey’s Anatomy – 3.3 (-)
    Once Upon a Time – 3.3
    Revenge – 2.6
    Suburgatory – 2.6
    The Middle – 2.5 (-)

    Shows Below Average:

    Scandal – 2.1 (+)
    The Neighbors – 2.0 (-)
    Nashville – 2.0
    Castle – 2.0
    Malibu Country – 1.6 (-)
    Last Man Standing – 1.6
    Last Resort – 1.5
    666 Park Avenue – 1.5
    Private Practice – 1.4
    Happy Endings – 1.4
    Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 – 1.2

**(-) indicates a weekly decline in the average
**(+) indicates a weekly increase in the average

Call me crazy, call me a fanboy, but I’d keep ‘Apartment 23′ around – it’s tremendously funny, dark, and seems to be hitting its comedic stride with these last few episodes; its done no favors by pitting it against ‘The Mindy Project’ and ‘The New Normal’, two of its biggest demographic rivals (for young women and gay men). I’d kill “The Neighbors”, shift ‘Suburgatory’ back to 830, and put ’23′ back after ABC’s strongest comedy since ‘Roseanne’, the unstoppable ‘Modern Family’.

  • ann

Cancel Apt. 23, Nashville and the Friday so-called comedies.

  • Ultima

    @JC
I wish they would try to fix low rated shows rather than just outright cancel them. Obviously the business doesnt work that way.

You know what else doesn’t work – fixing shows. The success rate for that is far below the success rate of new shows (which is pretty low).

  • Katey

FFS cancelling #666 park avenue & #Don’t trust the B in apartment 23? Really? Two of the best shows clearly from this network, they keep putting their funds into renewing crap! Such bs!

  • Nick

    @Katey

Yeah, doing stuff that makes them money is “such bs”. [rollseyes]

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

    @Lee, Whoops! January 8, 2013 it is!

  • Networkman

Don’t Trust the B… in Apt 23 should be cancelled effective immediately.

I would air Happy Endings after Modern Family repeats.

At the end of the season if Nashville has not improved, I would cancel it. Scandal has been growing. ABC had a great season last year with breakout dramas Once Upon A Time and Revenge. Nashville should be doing better. Also I like Body of Proof better and if that can maintain its numbers from last season, I would give that show the edge.

I wish Happy Endings would be picked up by FOX, it would be the perfect show to follow New Girl, especially if Mindy Project failed.

  • Jon

I see no hope for apt 23. While not a bad show, I just never really find time to fit it into my viewing schedule. I actually prefer it to Two Broke Girls, which I have found to be an over rated show.

  • David Howell

Apt. 23 is dead. OCB’s point that it, New Normal, and Mindy Project are all after a similar audience is actually an interesting one – Mindy Project is also in trouble, and New Normal is indirectly saved by The Voice by way of Go On.

I think Happy Endings will be canceled, it needs more than 22 to be syndicated and as we saw from Cougar Town last year, ABC are quite prepared to not commit to that even if they keep all the syndication revenue. They don’t for Happy Endings! If Sony sell it at a discount price through episode 88, could another network (TBS, I’m guessing) take advantage of that even if ABC don’t?

  • alvar

Happy Endings and Apartment 23 deserve a go on a night not oversaturated by comedies. This season they’ve dropped from mid 2s to low 1s – go figure.

  • Dan

Well at least most networks this year are airing the episodes that they have even of cancelled shows. Both 666 and Last Resort are getting proper finales and airing all episodes whereas 6 or 7 years ago they would have been dumped after a few eps.

Shows will always get cancelled but its great to see so many networks airing all the eps they ordered. Partners and Animal Practice are the exceptions but I think CBS will air Partners remaining eps next summer and NBC posted Animal Practice’s unaired eps online.

  • ABC needs more cowbell

It’s funny how the rating and the poll are so different. It’s obvious, ratings are voo doo numbers that morons seem to follow. Keep thinking 18-21 year olds are rich and spend all their money(probably less than $3K-$5K/year). Most are poor college kids. And which idiot decided to put Last Resort on at 8pm? He/she should be fired. It only proves how out of touch ABC execs really are and why nobody is watching.

  • Simon Amstell

Apt 23, Happy Endings need to canned but only Apt 23 will be. Either LMS or Malibu County will be gone. The Neighbours will also die.

  • Ted Craig

The Neighbors without a u is an American sitcom. Neighbours with a u is an Australian soap opera. If the show without a u gets moved, it will not be to 9:30 on Fridays. Suburgatory is not moving there either, and GMW is airing on ABC Family.

Apt. 23 is a prime target for cancellation, but not both that and Happy Endings. That leaves a one-hour hole on the schedule. It’s the same reason Happy Endings will not be moved back to the post-MF slot.

Also, I love the way people are so sure unaired pilots are going to be hits. They are like back-up quarterbacks in the NFL.

You and Max should find someone and have some sex. Really.
