We're into the holiday season for the Renew / Cancel Index and this post before the holiday break gives readers a chance to pick which shows they'd cancel were they a network programmer. You can vote as many times as you'd like, pick as many as you'd like. I've included every show, even canceled ones, so that no one feels left out!

Scheduling note: The Renew / Cancel Index will return with new Indexes and predictions on January 8, 2013 and will then only use the ratings since December 31, 2013 for its calculations for the remainder of the season. Expect prediction changes in the first weeks of 2013.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Spence, you have Happy Endings & Malibu Country on both your renewed and cancelled list.

“Happy Endings and Apartment 23 deserve a go on a night not oversaturated by comedies.”

Both had no comedy competition last night and STILL failed.

Your Last Resort posts have become a little more tame recently. Is the pain receding somewhat?

As for the people who voted to cancel Greys. Are you mad?

  • Nickjaro

Last Resort (never should have been canceled, an excellent show).
    Last Man Standing
    Malibu Country
    The Middle
    Once Upon A Time
    Grey’s Anatomy
    Modern Family

    Don’t Trust The B in Apt 23
    Happy Endings
    Private Practice
    666 Park Avenue
    The Neighbors

I sure wish the heads of ABC would stop programming the network like it’s Lifetime2.

  • Fred

I usually don’t like holiday themed episodes, but Happy Endings does a great job with them. This weeks HE ep was hilarious like every ep this season. The Thanksgiving ep this season was also very well done. Not to mention last seasons Valentines ep. Very consistent this season. In the past HE was either hilarious or just OK. This season a solid A.
Just an all around great sitcom.

Middle is also fantastic. Possibly the best season yet. EVERY character even the guests are always spot on. Rarely is the ep that I don’t enjoy. Fantastic family show. Sometimes even better than Modern Family.

I can only presume Don’t Trust the B. is still airing because ABC don’t have a replacement? I haven’t seen many ABC shows dip to 0.9 in the demo and stay on the air.

    PP,23,HE- please

  • I like this show

@Fred haha so true ABC’s “best” shows are pretty much Lifetime content. If ABC is anything but last in Male 18-34 demo id be surprised.

LR was a show for me and they JUST HAD TO put it against the #1 comedy on TV and the remains of Two and half men. Why couldn’t Scandal be put at 8pm? Didn’t want it to get slaughtered? Grey’s at 8pm? Couldn’t have that could we Grey’s getting destroyed by TBBT. Grey’s weak legacy must be preserved….Cya in 5 or 10 years ABC when you aren’t trying to be Lifetime.

  • I like this show

Sorry @ Poseur not Fred really need a edit option.

  • Jeff C.

I can’t believe how many of you want to get rid of The Neighbors. I consider it the best new comedy to come out this season. Either none of you have really given it a chance or you’re just not a fan of this type of broad comedy.

  • reidjr

The other side is some shows are not cheap keep an d if the ratings are very poor it does not make sense to just keep them.

  • Kourt

Castle will be on the air for at least another season

  • Max

I use to love Last Man Standing. The first season was fantastic! Now when I watch this supposed sitcom in the second season I feel angry in the end. If they could go back to its original first season format I along with millions of viewers would come back.

I like Modern Family. Glad I don’t have to worry about that. Ladies in household love their Dancing With The Stars.

  • iggy agrimotor

I’d cancel Charlie’s Angels, Desperate Housewives, Man Up, and Pan Am. (They’re still in the tags!)

  • bronxite

    KEEP !!!
Once Upon A Time – great show
Revenge – keeps everyone guessing what will happen next
Last Resort – good show not the same old stuff
    Grey’s Anatomy

NOT SURE cause I have not watched yet Nashville
    Could keep 666 Park Avenue
Private Practice should have tried with different cast like some of the newer ones.

ALL not really REALITY SHOWS !! Bachelor(ette) etc they totally
    Don’t Trust The B in Apt 23
    Happy Endings

    Last Man Standing (F)
    Malibu Country (F)

    The Neighbors
    The Middle
    Modern Family

  • J.P.

I just clicked on the shows I never / no longer watch. That left me with The Neighbors, The Middle and Modern Family which I enjoy weekly.

I tried to watch Castle and Once Upon a Time but neither series was able to hold my attention. It seemed that Nathan Fillian really lost something after Firefly and Drive and Once Upon a Time is just too soapy with one of the most annoying child actors of all time.

*drops a load of coal in ABC’s stocking*

  • John K.

Not sure why this isn’t posted on TVBythenumbers yet, but Apt 23 and Happy Endings will be airing twice weekly (Sundays 10-11, and Tuesdays 9-10) in January.

  • Harold

    Renew :
Malibu Country (historic 7 season renewal)
Modern Family (historic 8 season renewal)
    Last Man Standing
    Grey’s Anatomy (with 3 season renewel )
    DWTS (Airs Mid-Season until it’s 20th season)
    Body of Proof

    Cancel : Everything else!

  • Michael

I’m watching all ABC’s shows, so I don’t want see my favorites series be canceled! And “Happy Endings” is the best comedy since “Friends”, it’s so bad that the ratings doesn’t follow the quality…
