We're into the holiday season for the Renew / Cancel Index and this post before the holiday break gives readers a chance to pick which shows they'd cancel were they a network programmer. You can vote as many times as you'd like, pick as many as you'd like. I've included every show, even canceled ones, so that no one feels left out!

Scheduling note: The Renew / Cancel Index will return with new Indexes and predictions on January 8, 2013 and will then only use the ratings since December 31, 2012 for its calculations for the remainder of the season. Expect prediction changes in the first weeks of 2013.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    here is my predictions

    renewed
    the big bang theory
    ncis (final season)
    ncis los angeles
    csi
    criminal minds
    hawaii five o
    blue bloods
    person of interest
    vegas
    elementary
    hiym
    thm

    cancelled
    the golden boy
    the good wife
    the mentalist
    csi ny
    made in jersey
    partners

i think vegas will be renewed because cbs will cancel both the golden boy and csi ny and both the mentalist and the good wife due to low ratings and i think its time for csi ny to go.
i also think that next season will be ncis’s final season because contracts for mark harmon and a few others are up and i think the cast will sign on to do one more season and would want to finish on top instead of loosing ratings after all the show is currently in its 10th season

  • CBSviewer

    @ Robby

Are you stupid or Crazy ?

    1) CBS won’t cancel all CSI: NY, The Mentalist and The Good wife. Only one will get the axe.
    2) Vegas will be canceled. It got a 1.6 and it airs after TV’s #1 and TV’s #2 Show.
    3) Next season is far to be the final for NCIS. OK the contracts will end but new ones will be signed and if Mark Harmon doesn’t want to return, the Producers will find someone to replace him. When William Petersen left CSI they replaced him by Lawrence Fishburn who was replaced by Ted Danson last year. Plus, if they New Spin-Off works the Original Series is not ending.

  • ann

It’s time to end The Mentalist and Hawaii 5-0. I’d can Vegas too.

  • DW

i did one because i didnt read the headline right. so since we can cancel whatever i’m going with the mentalist if i’m cbs. my company doesnt receive coin for it and on the quality side , i’m not a fan. and its old so cost. i know csi’s are up there too but i can sell those in areas . i cant with the mentalist.

  • Casey

One thing I had to say about those fantasy schedules you see for next fall. Typically, they have Tuesday as a night of NCIS with the original, LA and new spinoff. Yet CBS hasn’t ever done that kind of thing before. When did you ever see CSI, CSI Miami and CSY New York all share a night? If the new spinoff gets picked up, I see them moving LA to a different night and time.

  • Networkman

    Cancel Vegas effective immediately.

At the end of the season, I would cancel CSI:NY. I don’t know why CBS cut its episode order by 1. But imo, that is not a good sign. Lastly, I would cancel HIMYM. I would let the producers know by January to wrap things up. Announce this as the final season and hopefully its viewership will rise somewhat as we head towards May series finale. Let it go out with decent numbers instead of going out in a whimper.

    2013-2014 season
    Friday
    8pm Undercover Boss/The Mentalist
    9pm The Mentalist/Good Wife(Final Season, 16 episodes)
    10pm Blue Bloods

    Sunday
It should be a night of all reality programming. CBS should try a new variety/game show.

    Monday
8pm Two & A Half Men (Final Season)
    8:30 *New Comedy
    9pm NCIS:LA
    10pm Hawaii Five-O

    Tuesday
    8pm NCIS
    9pm Person of Interest
    10pm *New Drama- Hostages

    Wednesday
    8pm *Beverly Hills Cop
    9pm Criminal Minds
    10pm CSI

    Thursday
    8pm Big Bang Theory
    8:30 *New Comedy
    9pm 2 Broke Girls
    9:30 Mike & Molly
    10pm Elementary
Overall CBS should try 2 new dramas and 2 new comedies for next season. Of course the network should order a third drama in case of the new ones fail.

    CBS Scripted Average: 2.7

I’ve compiled all off the scripted ratings data for CBS this season. All of the seasonal averages listed below (and the scripted average) are up-to-date as of Sunday, December 16, 2012.

    Shows Above Average:

The Big Bang Theory – 5.1
    Two and a Half Men – 3.8
    2 Broke Girls – 3.5
    NCIS – 3.4
    How I Met Your Mother – 3.2
    Mike & Molly – 3.1 (+)
    Criminal Minds – 3.0
    Person of Interest – 2.9
    NCIS: Los Angeles – 2.9 (–)

    Shows Below Average:

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation – 2.4
    Elementary – 2.4
    Hawaii Five-0 – 2.1
    Partners – 2.1
    Vegas – 1.8 (–)
    The Mentalist – 1.8
    The Good Wife – 1.7
    Blue Bloods – 1.4
    CSI: NY – 1.4

**(+) indicates a weekly increase in the average
**(–) indicates a weekly decrease in the average

The biggest surprise is that Vegas just can’t seem to find an audience. The cast is great, Chiklis and Quaid are two of the best. Why aren’t you watching America?

  • Dan

Well at least most networks this year are airing the episodes that they have even of cancelled shows. Both 666 and Last Resort are getting proper finales and airing all episodes whereas 6 or 7 years ago they would have been dumped after a few eps.

Shows will always get cancelled but its great to see so many networks airing all the eps they ordered. Partners and Animal Practice are the exceptions but I think CBS will air Partners remaining eps next summer and NBC posted Animal Practice’s unaired eps online.

  • TheFrenchGuy

    My guess Renewal chances:

    The Good Wife = 60%
    CSI: NY = 50%
    The Mentalist = 50%
    Vegas = 20%
    Rules of Engagement = 55%
    How I Met Your Mother = 70%
    Two and a Half Men = 80%
    Elementary = 60%

All the other are 100% sure to be Renewed.

  • Simon Amstell

Cancel CSI:NY, The Mentalist and Vegas. And bring in 3 new crime drama. DULL CBS

  • NJ Viewer

Am I one of the only ones here who likes Vegas?

  • NJ Viewer

Well, yeah, I mean everybody likes Vegas. I meant the TV show. Haha

  • Jim

How do they fit so much trash on one network? CBS truly is television for Philistines.

  • bluejays

Cancel CSI NY, Vegas, Elementary and then a toss up between TM and TGW depending on if one gets a syndication deal and how generous WB’s get with the other.

@Nick. Why would CBS move Elementary which is in a very easy spot with no real competition to the most competetive ten pm slot on Monday? Where it would face Revolution or another Voice boosted drama and football?

I think Elementary should move to Friday or Sunday. HFO move to Elementary slot or Tuesday at ten and the new NCIS given the Monday slot as CBS need something big hitting there with an established brand.

  • Spence

    Renewed:
    CSI
    NCIS
Two and a Half Men (probably, but I’m not sure)
How I Met Your Mother (not sure either)
    Criminal Minds
    The Mentalist
    NCIS: Los Angeles
    Mike & Molly
    Hawaii Five-0
    Blue Bloods
    2 Broke Girls
    Person of Interest
    Elementary

    Cancelled:
    CSI: NY
    The Good Wife
    Vegas

  • Josh

When does Rules Of Engagement come back?

  • Dan

    @Josh – February 4, 2013 for 13 episodes. Mondays at 8:30

  • KJ Styles

I think CSI NY is dead even if Golden Boy gets the axe. Remember last season when CSI Miami got cancelled. It’s season order was cut short by NY 22, both shows got cancelled and even a new syndication deal with AMC couldn’t save CSI Miami.

I predict either Good Wife or Mentalist will move to Fridays at 9 next season provided that one or both gets renewed. Golden Boy’s renewal will mean that TGW or Mentalist will get the axe, but I think CSI NY gets the axe either way.

  • Billy martins

I”am sorry to say that CBS Network needs to get rid of 2&/men,NCIS,HIMYM,CSI NYTo join those show who heavily already departed like Made in jersey,&partners.& please keep they following shows for another season like The mentalist,The good wife,Vegas,CSI.and so on.
