We're into the holiday season for the Renew / Cancel Index and this post before the holiday break gives readers a chance to pick which shows they'd cancel were they a network programmer. You can vote as many times as you'd like, pick as many as you'd like. I've included every show, even canceled ones, so that no one feels left out!

Scheduling note: The Renew / Cancel Index will return with new Indexes and predictions on January 8, 2013 and will then only use the ratings since December 31, 2012 for its calculations for the remainder of the season. Expect prediction changes in the first weeks of 2013.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    As far as launching new shows, moving SPN to tuesdays is the best option. But, if the CW wants to keep SPN up and not to mention Arrow up as well, then they will leave SPN on Wednesdays. Its all up to what is more important to the CW.

  • Claudia

    CW CANNOT cancel BATB this show is solid gold, people cant wait to come back, Ive been reading everything about this, PEOPLE cant “literally” wait for this show to come back, usually after the midseason breaks, people lose track of the shows and get boring, BATB has been getting better and better, specially after the last 3 episodes….Bridesmaid Up episode 9 WAS MY FAVORITE EPISODE, they were brilliant eventho has less audience than the pilot it will draw in more audience to the come back on January 24th, mark my words :)

  • Restless

    CBS has vet show Two and a Half Men behind the monster Big Bang Theory. So I think it just as likely CW sticks Supernatural behind Arrow or Vampire Diaries next season as move it. (Of course CBS is in a much healthier place than CW, but still, can be argued CBS is ‘wasting’ it’s potential launch pad.)

    Personally I’m thinking they’ll move it, but then again, Arrow still has plenty of time to pull a Secret Circle and crash and burn. Might end up Supernatural staying on Wednesdays with yet another new show.

    Though it would be interesting if Arrow stayed high, Supernatural got moved, and another new hit launched before it; then moved again for season ten, and another new hit before it. :P Not saying it likely with CW’s track record, but it’d be kinda cool.

    @SPN Fanatics
    Calm yourselves. People have a right to dislike a show, and even wish it were canceled. You’ve no reason to feel threatened by their opinions, they’re not in charge of anything at the network. :/ It’s not good to attack and cast ill wishes on others, and just makes everyone look hateful and childish.

  • thesnowleopard

    @Alexis
    That’s a wee bit retentionista, don’t you think? The argument would be more compelling if every single hit the CW has managed to create hadn’t basically been a self-starter. If anything, the CW’s programming is an argument against the worth of retention. Not to mention that the CW hasn’t exactly had roaring success with reality shows or comedies the way the larger networks have. And reality shows, especially, are what make good lead-ins.

    @Restless
    Oh, please. Chuck, Fringe, Nikita, and even TSC(?!) fans on this site have regularly wished fiery death on anyone who so much as looks on their shows askance and you think a few SPN fans telling a few haters with Wishful Thinking Complex to go soak their heads is over the top?

  • Alexis

    @thesnowleopard

    Self-starter is one thing, premiering without ANY support from an established show (as a lead-in or lead-out) is another.

    The only two hits that came from The CW (as opposed to The WB) are TVD and Arrow, two shows that premiered behind SPN. So they were still paired with something established, even if they were self-starters.

    Keeping SPN and Arrow together means they’ll likely have to launch two new shows together on the same night, which is different from how they launched Arrow and TVD (as self-starters, but behind a successful show). That’s a hell of a risk.

    By the way, I’m one of the people who thinks TVD should be moved to 9pm with a new show leading into it at 8pm, rather than have yet ANOTHER attempt to use TVD as a lead-in. I think it’s been established that that doesn’t work. So I’m on board with freshman shows being self-starters, just not with launching two freshmen on the same night.

    So what do you think?

  • Janice

    @Claudia
    BATB WILL be canceled because it’s pulling roughly the same numbers as 90210 and Hart of Dixie which have no lead-in while it has the second-best lead-in in the whole network. it’s going to cancel it because it’s unclear if it can survive on its own (if it gets 0.6 with a 1.1 lead in imagine what it could do without it) and because it’s much further from syndacation than the other shows (90210 has been sold i believe and HOD would be entering S03 next fall). And it’s going to cancel it because critics have completely absolutely destroied the show (see tv.com or tvguide). BATH is as good as dead the only thing that could save it is if both cult AND carry diaries go under come spring

  • Restless

    @thesnowleopard
    I’m not in those other fandoms so I don’t get second hand embarrassment from them. I do think it’s over the top to attack someone for their opinion on a tv show and tell them to go to hell. Especially for saying Supernatural is overdue to be canceled, pfft, with how many Supernatural fans themselves say it should have ended at season five? Come on.

  • Lauren

    @JD : If people have different tastes, they don’t have common sense? LMFAO!! You should learn what freedom of expression means.

    And “It’s been a source of embarrassment for the network ever since it first aired” absolutely not!!! CW congratulated Hart Of Dixie for doing best ratings on Tuesday for three years.

  • Tom

    “BATB has been getting better and better, specially after the last 3 episodes…”

    This phrase is currently at the top of my Fan Excuse Bingo Card. Take any show that you and two others regularly watch and, notwithstanding its lousy ratings, claim that it’s miraculously been transformed. What’s really happened is that the show, especially B&B, has just focused more intensely on exactly those weaknesses that drove off most potential viewers after the first episode. We’ll see if the ratings for the next new episode rise above the usual 0.6. However, I doubt if there’s an army of closet Nielsen fans who are about to rise in support of B&B.

  • thesnowleopard

    @Alexis
    8pm shows do have a lead-in. In fact, as the admins here have pointed out many times, they have a far better lead-in than most CW shows. The shows that come before them often score better than a CW show.

    TVD is not going anywhere until it starts to fade. That’s what they did with Smallville before it and there is no benefit for the network to move the show to 9pm. They have three shows that are currently doing well. There is no reason to screw that up when they’ve already seen that a new show can be launched at 8pm and thrive with no lead-in. Is it possible that people are tuning in early to Arrow who really want to watch Supernatural? Sure. But Arrow would still do well even without Supernatural. And TVD has already shown that its audience is not very interested in watching another CW show on the same night.

    @Restless

    You seem to be confused. You seem to be annoyed at people who are annoyed at *other* people putting down their show and its fans. Do some people respond with too much irritation to someone who is being a troll? Sure. But it doesn’t make the first person demanding the end of their show any less a troll. At least those calling for the end of bubble shows are arguing based on ratings. Saying a successful show needs to end just because you don’t like it anymore is either delusional (“The Nielsens shall bow to my will!”), lazy (“I can’t change the channel, so the show must go”), or simply naive (“But it’s all about quality! It’s all about art! Nielsen ratings mean nothing!”).

  • JD

    @Lauren: if we’re consulting dictionaries here, maybe you should consider re-examining the definition of ‘marketing spin’. Just because a show might have delivered the best ratings on Tuesday for three years doesn’t mean those ratings were good, or even acceptable. They gave the show a second chance with season two and it’s still producing abysmal results. The dead weight needs to go. I think the CW, on top of a good proportion of the polled audience, realise this means Flop of Dixie.

  • Melanie

    @ Restless — You’re correct about CBS – even with the dramas — their #1 drama leads into their #2 drama (NCIS & NCIS:LA) and the pairing obviously is working, so they leave it alone and concentrate on parts of the schedule that are not working.

    Which is what the CW should do — also the CW has a limited aomount of PR money to spend, it doesn’t want to spend it on promoting schedule changes for established shows.
    I can see them shuffling whatever two of the underperforming HOD, BATB, 90210, and/or Carrie that aren’t cancelled to M & T (I see they have a repeat of BATB tonight)while they work on revamping the nights, but I just don’t see them changing Wed night that is FINALLY working for them.

  • James

    @ Kaio

    I’m pretty sure that if The CW will give Sherwood the series order, and they’re going to move SPN off of Wednesdays, then Sherwood will be put behind Arrow.

  • Kaio

    @James

    Two archers on the same day? It is tiring

  • oldfan

    CANCEL
    90210
    Gossip Girl
    Supernatural – like first season just does nothing for me now
    Beauty And The Beast -not as good as thought it would be Secret Circle was Better

    KEEP
    Vampire Diaries
    Hart Of Dixie – funny show great cast
    Emily Owens, M.D. – sweet show without killing and mayhem

    SO SO
    Nikita – was one of my favorites but they need to change some cast
    Arrow – not sure about this one

  • oldfan

    The biggest problem with Thursday nights at 9pm for CW is the other networks and cable stations. Thursday is the big show night at 9 & 10 .. Maybe if CW had shows at 10pm they might pull from other stations..

    CW also seems to cancel decent shows Secret Circle, Ringer, and now Emily Owens without any chance to get known but keep nasty show like Top Model 90210 Gossip Girl etc

    I will continue to watch Vampire Diaries and Hart of Dixie.. will see what happens to the new midseason shows.

  • mary tidwell

    I would cancel them all except hod 90210 and supernatural they r the best

  • AlbertLi

    Base on the current ratings, I would say that Arrow,TVD and Supernatural are currently the backbone of CW, so they are very much likely to be on the renew list for next season.

    HOD’s rating is sort of steady at the moment compare to its last season, it could be canceled if the rating fall below standard during second half of the season, but I personally wish it could be renewed.

    Despite I like Beauty and the Beast, based on the low popularity among viewers and the rating so far, it’s painful to say that it’s headed for certain cancelation unless the rating goes up considerably in Spring, which is unlikely.

    I don’t quite understand the reason for the likely renewal of Nikita,because the current rating is not looking good, in normal situation, I would say Nikita is headed for certain cancelation, but if it’s for business reason, then it’s a differnt thing. Anyway, I’m glad that it is likely Nikita is going to be renewed.

    The Carrie Diaries has a pretty weak premiere, but I know there are shows that have a weak premiere but get better later on,and Cult is yet to air, so it’s hard to say anything right now about the Spring new series

    Ratings are one of the most important factors for renew/cancelaton, but I know that there are other factors that matters, such as production cost and so on, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the predictions and final decisions are different

    I really hope all the series that are currently airing on CW be renewed. However, if BatB gets canceled, I wouldn’t be surpriced, but I would miss it

  • Angellica .T.

    please renew the secret circle.
    It is better than beauty and the beast
