Oscar® Nominee Sir Ridley Scott To Direct First-Ever Pilot For TV From Acclaimed Writer Paul Attanasio's Script

LOS ANGELES, CA (December 20, 2012) – SHOWTIME has ordered its first pilot for 2013, THE VATICAN, a provocative contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics – set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic church. The series will explore the relationships and rivalries as well as the mysteries and miracles behind one of the world's most hidden institutions. Two–time Oscar nominee (Quiz Show, Donnie Brasco) and three-time Emmy® nominee (House M.D.) Paul Attanasio wrote the hour-long script.  Master of modern day cinema and triple Oscar nominee and Golden Globe®-winner Sir Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Prometheus, Blade Runner, Black Hawk Down, The Good Wife), will direct the pilot – marking his first ever for television.  THE VATICAN will begin production in 2013 and is being produced by Sony Pictures Television in association with SHOWTIME for series consideration.  Attanasio, Scott, and David Zucker (The Good Wife) will serve as executive producers.

    Is this actually serious?

This sounds like what will be a rarity for Showtime, a bomb. I’m not of the Catholic persuasion & I can’t imagine any serious minded Catholic wanting to watch this show. I’ll pass as I’m sure a lot of other people will also.

“a provocative contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics”

Has anyone actually seen the term “genre thriller” used before, and if so, what exactly does it mean? I know “genre show” is Hollywood code for “speculative fiction, but we don’t want to scare away the non-nerds by calling it sci-fi.” I don’t think that’s what this show will be, unless they’re going to have actual angels and stuff, which might be interesting. But if they’re not, then what exactly makes this a “genre thriller” rather than just an ordinary political thriller?

This could be Showtime’s “Luck”, critics will eat it up and viewers will stay away in droves.

They had some really great creative people on that show too.

This is odd considering Showtime already has the Borgias that is about the pope and his family. I know it’s not modern day but it has all the political intrigue, etc. Don’t know what more this series could bring.
