Even before required training begins, young men and women may take optional courses with the Swiss army’s M57 assault rifle. They keep that gun at home for three months and receive six half-day training sessions.
Over a soldier’s career he also spends scattered days on mandatory equipment inspections and required target practice. Thus, in a 30-year mandatory military career, a Swiss man only spends about one year in direct military service. Following discharge from the regular army, men serve on reserve status until age 50 (55 for officers).
By the Federal Constitution of 1874, military servicemen are given their first equipment, clothing and arms. After the first training period, conscripts must keep gun, ammunition and equipment an ihrem Wohnort (“in their homes”) until the end of their term of service.
Today, enlisted men are issued M57 automatic assault rifles and officers are given pistol, Each reservist is issued 24 rounds of ammunition in sealed packs for emergency use. (Contrary to Handgun Control’s claim that “all ammunition must be accounted for,” the emergency ammunition is the only ammo that requires accounting.)
An estimated 5,000 children ages 14 and under are hospitalized due to unintentional drowning-related incidents each year; 15 percent die in the hospital and as many as 20 percent suffer severe, permanent neurological disability.
National Safety Council
If the object is REALLY to protect children, maybe we should start with swimming pools.
If good guys with guns are not a good idea, we should disarm the Secret Service.
After discharge from service, the man is given a bolt rifle free from registration or obligation. Starting in the 1994, the government will give ex-reservists assault rifles. Officers carry pistols rather than rifles and are given their pistols the end of their service.
The army sells a variety of machine guns, submachine guns, anti-tank weapons, anti-aircraft guns, howitzers and cannons. Purchasers of these weapons require an easily obtained cantonal license, and the weapons are registered, In a nation of six million people, there are at least two million guns, including 600,00 fully automatic assault rifles, half a million pistols, and numerous machine guns. Virtually every home has a gun.
Besides subsidised military surplus, the Swiss can buy other firearms easily too. While long guns require no special purchase procedures, handguns are sold only to those with a Waffenerwerbsschien (purchase certificate) issued by a cantonal authority. A certificate is issued to every applicant over 18 who is not a criminal or mentally infirm.
But Handgun Control’s misstatements are no worse than those contained in a highly biased Library of Congress book Gun Control Laws in Foreign Countries (which tax dollars paid for). That book claims that in Switzerland “the policy is not to provide automatic guns and other dangerous weapons to the general population”-an utter untruth, at least if one considers adults to be part of “the general population.” The book also asserts that “the sale of handguns to individuals is restricted and reflects a clear Swiss government policy of keeping this strict control.” Yet the only individuals who are “restricted” from buying handguns are children, the insane and ex-criminals.
Favorite web site.. The Onion
Whatever the effect of Swiss guns abroad, they are not even a trivial crime problem domestically. Despite all the guns, the murder rate is a small fraction of the American rate, and is less than the rate in Canada or England, which strictly control guns, or in Japan, which virtually prohibits them. The gun crime rate is so low that statistics are not even kept.
Obama mentions himself 63 times in his “speech” pretty much about nothing….It was suppose to be a funeral for Inouye…but it turned into a I LOVE MYSELF fest by Obama. OBAMA IS JUST A SICK AND DEPRAVED MAN…..so are liberals…Their sick and depraved policies and thinking ways have downgraded America.
People do pay for entitlements. Not just Social security and Medicare btw. People also pay in toward unemployment insurance and other public services like education and public safety.
Doug Z is pushing water uphill. He probably believes, too, that the US Government should drastically cut spending in a bad recession or depression and that we shouldn’t increase the tax rate of the super rich. It’s common sense that if assault type rifles are available (with fragmenting bullets and large magazines) to almost anybody, half with virtually no background checks, and there are more loony people around than you can shake a stick at…that loony people are likely to get hold of these weapons and kill lots of people. That’s exactly what has been happening REPEATEDLY over the last decade or so…. There is no 2nd Amendment need for someone to have an assault type rifle and large magazines as this would be ineffective in countering the government…. The NRA however, doesn’t use common sense….
Faith3 – Well Cathy, the GOPs spending cuts do win over Obama’s or the Dems when it comes to cutting domestic spending but not so when it comes to Defence. So, Obama and the Dems are more responsible in asking for tax increases from those who won’t suffer the cuts. Seems fair and responsible to me instead of decimating the already cash strapped middle class with more cuts in public services and social safety nets in order to protect their rich constitutes from contributing in taxes.
——————————–
Defense spending in 2012 $900 billion. Cuts to defense (not including sequestration) starting in 2013 $500 billion over ten years.
Name me a public service or safety net being cut by $500 billion. Before you say medicare those cuts are being spent on other programs so their not cuts..just redistrubting the money.
Nobama’s 2013 budget (page 7 of the comments) 8.7 to 5% in 10 years. A 3.7% cut in ten years.
Which is being cut more, defense or public service & safety nets? Class warfare doesn’t work in the real world. IF (that’s a BIG if) any cuts are made + the increase taxes on the rich still doesn’t balance the budget.
Merry Christmas one & all

People pay for defense too. What’s the point?
lol@ usa
Doug Z-s’ thesis is complete bunk, supported by the right wing Koch Bros funding a campaign of misinformation about gun control in Switzerland and Israel. Koch Bros operates the Cato Institute.

Hillbilly–the right wing kooks in the House are attempting to cut Social Security and Medicare (and eliminate them both if possible) while increasing the Defense budget which, the commanding generals say, does NOT need to be increased. But with thinking like Romney espoused–i.e., we don’t have the same number of ships as we did 75 years a go, therefore we should build more ships (and bayonets as well) …what do you expect?????
@usn retired
where have you been?
Busy, I binked and it was Thanksgiving, then I blinked again and it was Christmas Eve.
This is the season for Toy runs. Toys for Tots, Toys for homeless children, Toys for Foster Children etc……..
And busy stocking up ammo.
I wonder how many union workers in the defense industries are in favor of cuts in the defense budget?
Hi BevAG! {{hugs}}
I consider you a friend as well.
Sorry for not posting sooner. I had to run some errands with a neighbor. I wrecked my F-250 and needed to go to the Towing yard to get more belongings. I fell asleep on the way home from work yesterday morning after a 12 hour night shift, and my F-250 went into a ditch off Hwy-74, back end up in the air, and camper shell thrown 20 feet away. Front end is bent in badly, both air bags deployed, and I could barely open doors to get out. It will very likely be ruled a total loss. I’m ok, just bumps and bruises and sore around where the seat belt caught me. I was able to get out and walk around in a mild daze before I heard 911 over the truck’s bluetooth inside the cab. Boy, those airbags stink when deployed, like sniffing the barrel of a cannon after a shot. Bad start to a wonderful time of year. The funny part is the thing bothering me most right now is the days I spent installing my new AirLift kit (of all things to be worrying about, huh?). The second worst part of it is I only have a motorcycle to get around for now (though I’ll be borrowing the neighbor’s car for a couple of days). I’m sure the good Lord will bring good things from this.
I’ll still be spending time with close friends tonight.
Merry Christmas to you BevAG.
