On a ratings basis, the renewal of How I Met Your Mother was never in doubt, but whether the cast wanted to come back wasn't as certain. Deadline's Nikki Finke reports deals have been closed with all the cast members and the series will be renewed for a 9th season. The series had been in the final year of its deal and the creators had been pushing for everything to get resolved by the end of December so they could do the necessary build-up to the series finale reveal this season if necessary.  Apparently all the cast were on-board to return except for Jason Segel: "But he just got turned around today at the last second. The show was literally dead,” according to Finke.

Updated: While the cast is now under contract for another season, the show has not been officially renewed.

So they are dragging this for another year….Dont get me wrong, I love this show but you have to know when to stop. This show has run its course.

It’s time CBS come in the same situation as NBC and must try a lot of new stuff.
At one time, your old succes are gone and must have new one’s.

    @Networkman,
I think HIMYM was never the lowest rated comedy, cause CBS always cancels the lowest rated comedy, and here we go – HIMYM is 8 yeas old and still has a lock for renewal. Even now, the lowest rated comedy is Mike & Molly (I agree it seems like 6 season show, but 2 Broke Girls will make at least 8 seasons and should peak in ratings somewhere in season 4 or 5).

As for HIMYM ratings, it had some weird times when it could be called a hit – like after the Britney episodes in season 3, the show spent the whole season 4 at 8:30 behind TBBT, always building on that lead in and outrating it. 14 of 24 episodes broke 4.0; the same happened to HIMYM in its season 7, only at 8:00. After tying a series low 2.5 in April 2011, the show broke 4.0 mark 14 times (one episode scored a series high 5.2). But then the Voice came along.

So the show might out of nowhere see some great ratings again next season, who knows? Maybe the quality will go up ;)

I was expecting this show to end, this season has been really off.

Two And A Half Men getting better every episode this season is a sure thing for renewal.

Mike & Molly is renewed for syndication

2 Broke Girls & The Big Bang Theory

I doubt Rules Of Engagement will get 8 seasons.

Woooooo! Considering there’s only 12 episodes left in this season and we still haven’t met the mother, or even know who she is for that matter, I think a 9th season is needed! YAY!!!! :D

This is great news. But I think the Season 9 will be the last. The producers of the show said a few years ago that they think the show will last around 8 seasons, so I think that next year will begin to wrap everything up.

Nine seasons has always made sense to me:

Season 8- Meet the mother at the end of the finale
Season 9- Ted and the mother dating

  • JONNYSBRO

That’s awesome. Its been a great season for the show and I am so happy this show has one last season. They already said by the creator the ninth season no maytter what would be the FINAL YEAR. So let the show go off with a bang and wrap it. 9 seasons thats a great run for a CBS comedy.

I was prepared for this season to be its last….if next season’s episodes can at least be as good as the last couple that have aired (very enjoyable) that would be great. Kinda wish they’d announce the next one as the final season, though – I’ve never missed an episode but I’m ready for it to end.

Okay, This has been the best season in a long time. LONG, LONG time! So I’m happy. But seriously the Kids have to grow. It’s annoying me.

I don’t want next year to be the last :(. Hopefully it isn’t.

Mike & Molly isn’t the lowest rated comedy, if anything its building on 2 Broke Girls or at least holding 100% of the lead in. HIMYM is lower rated but its good that CBS is giving the show a final year. I expect Two and a Half Men to get a final year next year and 2BG and M&M will be around for years to come.

This doesn’t bode well for Rules of Engagement and Friend Me doesn’t have a shot. I expect Friend Me to be burned off this summer.

This year should have been its last. I am a HIMYM fan, but the stories just aren’t creative anymore and sometimes they are just boring.

  • Anon

They should have wrapped this up last year.

Watch the reruns from earlier seasons – they are still hilarious. The current episodes are, for the most part, just plain tedious. This show no longer stacks up well against its own past.

  • YES!!! I am soo happy.
    My favourite show!
I cannot wait to see what next season ill have in store.

Carter already said in an interview that if the cast resigns for a 9th and final season he would need a full season to fully wrap up the shows mythologies.

  • Kissan

If this is HIMYM’s ninth and final season, why didn’t they put final season in the title?

  • Bitter Ringer Fan

    @Networkman
you need to check the renew/cancel index! HIMYM is I believe number 5 and Mike & Molly is number 6, so HIMYM is not the lowest rated comedy but Mike & Molly is. (since Partners got cancelled already).

    A) Yes, Mike and Molly is the lowest rated comedy and saying it’s higher rated than 2broke girls is quite hilarious. The ratings aren’t close at all.

    B) Last season, CBS cancelled both its new comedies (HTBAG, and Rob) and it looks like that trend might continue. Who knows about RoE, but it’s ol’ reliable and always seems to show up.
