Univision to Finish the Year as the No. 4 Television Network Among Adults 18-34, Ahead of CBS and All Cable Networks, Up From No. 5 in 2011

MIAMI – DECEMBER 21, 2012 – From December 10 to December 16, the Univision Network showed record growth as a symbol of the Spanish-language network’s strong performance across many of its key programs.  Last week’s extensive coverage of Jenni Rivera’s tragic death on Univision drove the following programs to historic ratings successes: “Despierta América” (Wake-Up America), “Hoy” (Today), “El Gordo y la Flaca” (The Scoop and the Skinny), “Primer Impacto” (First Impact), “Noticiero Univision” (Univision News) and “Noticiero Univision Edicion Nocturna” (Univision News Late Night Edition).

  • “Despierta América” posted its best weekly performance in the history of the show, delivering nearly 1.7 million Total Viewers 2+, 881,000 Adults 18-49, 859,000 Adults 25-54 and 440,000 Adults 18-34 last week. “Despierta América” also generated more Adult 18-49 viewers than “CBS This Morning” (with a +23%  advantage), and more Adult 18-34 viewers than ABC's “Good Morning America” (+19% Adv.), “CBS This Morning” (+122% Adv.) and NBC's “Today Show” (+32% Adv.).

  • “Hoy” averaged over 1.3 million Total Viewers 2+, 760,000 Adults 18-49, 725,000 Adults 25-54 and 385,000 Adults 18-34 last week, marking its best weekly performance in the time period.

  • Last week also marked a historic performance for “El Gordo y la Flaca” as it delivered an average of 3.3 million Total Viewers 2+, 1.8 million Adults 18-49, 1.7 million Adults 25-54 and 956,000 Adults 18-34 – more than doubling its audience levels in comparison to the same week in 2011.

  • Also doubling its audience levels from the comparable week in 2011, “Primer Impacto” generated a historic week with an average of 3.5 million Total Viewers 2+, 1.9 million Adults 18-49, 1.8 million Adults 25-54 and 932,000 Adults 18-34.

In news, “Noticiero Univision” airing weeknights at 6:30 p.m., set a record breaking weekly performance with 3.1 million Total Viewers 2+, 1.6 million Adults 18-49, 1.6 million Adults 25-54 and 684,000 Adults 18-34 last week.  It also ranked as the No. 1 evening newscast on broadcast television with more viewers aged 18 to 34 than “ABC World News Tonight” (+21% Adv.), “CBS Evening News” (+76% Adv.) and “NBC Nightly News” (+11% Adv.). This marked the fifth consecutive week that “Noticiero Univision” outperformed “CBS Evening News” in the Adult 18-34 demographic group. “Noticiero Univision” also averaged more Adults 18-49 than “CBS Evening News” with a strong audience advantage of +16% last week.

Continuing with more record breaking performances, “Noticiero Univision Edicion Nocturna” airing weeknights at 11:30 p.m., averaged 2.3 million Total Viewers 2+ and 1.2 million Adults 25-54. It was also the fourth highest-rated late night program on all of broadcast television this past week among Adults 18-49 (1.2 million), out delivering first-run airings of CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman” (+25% Adv.) and “Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” (+128% Adv.) and NBC’s “Jimmy Fallon” (+106% Adv.) and “The Tonight Show” (+121% Adv.).

In the current season, Univision’s “Despierta América,” “El Gordo y la Flaca” and “Primer Impacto” are up by double-digit margins compared to the same period last year across the key demographics of Total Viewers 2+, Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54. As the year comes to an end, Univision is set to finish 2012 posting wins among hard-to-reach TV viewers aged 18 to 34. For the sixth consecutive year, the Spanish-language network is set to finish as the No. 1 network on Friday nights among Adults 18-34 – ahead of its closest competitor, NBC by 31%.  Univision set to finish as the No. 4 network among Adult 18-34 audience, beating CBS and all cable networks during broadcast primetime – up from fifth place a year ago. With two times more Adults 18-34 viewers, Univision has also outperformed the CW every single year since 2006 in broadcast primetime.

Univision is also set to end 2012 as the No. 5 network on all of television for the ninth consecutive year, since 2004, during broadcast primetime with 3.6 million Total Viewers 2+ and 1.8 million Adults 18-49. The Spanish-language network was the No. 1 broadcast network among Adults 18-49 on 38 nights in 2012.  Additionally, it has out-delivered at least one or more of the English-language broadcast networks -- ABC, CBS, NBC or FOX -- on more nights in 2012 thus far than the comparable dates in 2011 among Adults 18-49 (279 nights vs. 265 nights) – as well as among Adults 18-34 (333 nights vs. 326 nights).

This is not something to be proud of. Univision programs
are just about telenovelas and talk shows. I know many people
who din’t speak, write or read english because
    Watching telenovelas is a priority.
