JayTN — I’m glad you are liking Y&R but for the life of me I cannot. The characters are ok I suppose, they just do not have any REAL story to go along with them. A grown woman got an easy bake oven for Christmas from her lover and a set of cookie cutters from her niece. Really??????? And it’s the same for the rest of the show. Jack’s father’s ghost visits him almost on a weekly basis now — beyond stupid. Each time they show Katherine at home now she collaspes on the sofa as if to have a stroke, which she doesn’t. ??? Adam and Chelsea’s marriage is already over and they were married 5 minutes ago and declared to each other they could NEVER BE APART. And I’ve mentioned before with the 3,825 different business storylines all going on at the same time with different sets of characters discussing new products, new lines, new strategies — omg, beyond boring already. They didn’t even show any Christmas decorations until I think the Christmas Eve episode. ???? I was beginning to think the show this year wasn’t even going to acknowledge the holiday — and they almost haven’t.

What really blew me away was when I watched DAYS on Christmas night I think. Wow, there was CHRISTMAS EVERYWHERE, and characters in each other’s homes showing how much they loved each other and decorating the tree, and going to Christmas Eve mass and singing carols and reading the Christmas story from Luke (which shocked me this was actually on TV which is scared to death anymore to show anything about our LORD knowing it has the potential to offend some idiot somewhere). Amazing episode, and to say that from a viewer who knows practically nothing about the show or the relationships between the characters is incredible. From what I’ve seen from all the shows left now, I would hand DAYS the emmy for best show this summer based on this Christmas episode alone. Why this show is drawing the least viewers of the remaining shows is a complete mystery to me.

  • jonboyelk

@timsdale wow! I’ve never watched Days but would like to have seen that Christmas episide. Felt a bit let down by GH. They’ve been traditional themes (the dysfunctional Quartermaine Thanksgiving, the Nurses Ball) and I hoped they’d reinstitute the telling of the Christmas Story the way Dr Steve Hardy used to do every year. Too bad.

  • LynTX

Getting over 4.5M may now be Y&R’s goal. Sad. Not feeling the new regime yet. S/ls are rushed; new characters are thrown in with no build-up (just eye candy, depending on your taste) and vets are used as props. Theres just no depth anymore. Looking at comments on the various soap boards, maybe writers are giving the audience what it wants – so many feel if a character isn’t bedhopping or scheming, they are boring. Is this what entertains us now? Don’t we want to know ‘why’ our soap families behave/react the way they do?

I don’t know. I’m just not entertained anymore and I feel like I’ve lost a friend. LOL!

  • Janet

I don’t know how the numbers for B&B can increase. This show has hit rock bottom. Between the triangle from hell and Brooke wanting her brother-in-law, I can’t watch. Plus the actresses that play Brooke and Hope are terrible. Brooke only squints her eyes and Hope just over annunciates her words – she has no timing or chemistry with the other characters. Y&R is okay. I wished they would have kept Chelsea and Adam together. I love GH – it is really good. Love the vets.

I can’t wait for AMC and OLTL to come back – I’ll pay for them. B&B will be off my DVD.

I think the key demographs will keep increasing. Most teenagers/20 year olds don’t watch tv. They are more into xbox and youtube.

@TimsDale4Ever, I love DAYS Christmas episodes, as well, they are always very meaningful. The rest of the year, DAYS has just lost that heartwarming feeling for me and I don’t watch it any more. @Jonboyelk, ITA, GH’s Christmas epi was dullsville. I expected better from RC after that great Thanksgiving episode they had. Every time I think I’m going to take a break from GH, however, they bring back another great vet! lol

  • Mike

LynTX, I know what you mean. I feel the same way too. And the old friend is not the show, it is the characters. I just don’t feel attached to them like I once did. And that makes me sad.

In times past when the show wasn’t fully entertaining, you still wanted to sit down and spend time with the characters even if the current story was sucky.

I just wish there was still that connection. I don’t have the confidence anymore that it will ever be there again.

  • jonboyelk

Somebody needs to tell the lousy actor who plays Cane on Y&R that he needs to spend major time in the gym before he does a shirtless scene. And from the looks of things yesterday he needs to take Josh Morrow with him. JM looks like he’s getting soft around the middle

  • Joe

Glad to hear this, lets hope these shows can grow in popularity in the comeing year!!!

  • robert

Love Y&R. I loved Days Christmas episode. I am really disappointed in GH right now. The GH Christmas episode sucked. I expect to see a GH drop in the ratings.

  • MBmomof3

Just watched the DOOL Christmas epi on Soapnet. It was so enjoyable. It brought me back to the heyday of soap greatness. It showed how great daytime soaps can be today and in the future. Hope 2013 brings great things for the all the soaps and the fans!

  • ohiogirl

I’m not sure why Days has fallen in the ratings…my guesses are as follows:
    1. Gay Will…changing the total personna of a well known character is insulting to the long time viewer. Changing Will to being gay is the same as turning EJ gay…it just doesn’t make sense. We bought it when Will was so in love with Gabi and fell so hard for Grace’s teen-mother. To change a character who is well known simply for the sake of convienience is disrespectful to viewers, and lessens their loyalty to the show…the character of Sonny came to the show as a gay man. Since he has defined his character, a new character should be introduced as his interest. Let Will go back to his old self.
    2. Not allowing Sami to commit to who she truly loves…this is also playing games with the viewers. If we are to believe the scenes between Sweeney and Scott, it makes no sense to tell the viewers that they were wrong about what they saw. From the time these two actors played Santo and Colleen, it was clear that they should be a long term power couple. Rafe needs a new direction. EJ and Samantha need to become the next core family on Days, as we watch their children grow up. They are the only two who could wear the same shoes as Tom and Alice.
    3.

I know that we always get big delays due to the holidays. I thought sure though that we would get the ratings for the week of the 17th by now though.

The syndicated ratings weren’t delayed at all, but still nothing on the daytime ratings.

Maybe we will get them later today. If not I guess Wednesday maybe.

If they were released to the networks by now they must have been bad because we haven’t even gotten any press releases spinning the numbers.

  • JayTN

Mike…the morning news ratings, which are usually released the same day as the soap ratings are still outstanding (or at least ABC hasn’t issued their usual “we beat ‘Today’” press release).

ohiogirl…I don’t buy the “Will is gay” storyline as a reason for the soap’s “fallen” ratings. For starters, why would the writers turn Will gay just for the sake of Sonny? As you pointed out, Sonny is a “new” character in the sense that he hasn’t been featured on the show before (at least not in child form). Will is a long standing character with history associated with virtually all of the long running families on the show (i.e. the Hortons, Bradys, Marlena, Kate, etc.). I find it hard to believe the writers would change a character like Will simply to fit in with a new character. It would logically be the other way around…Sonny was made gay in order to interact with Will. In fact, I would argue that Sonny would not even have been added to the show if not for the decision to make Will gay.

I don’t have the same opinion of Will as you do, as a lot of gay men and women have dated – and even married and had families – with members of the opposite sex. The fact that Will – who is a teenager – dated girls in the past is really immaterial to the characters sexual preference. Haven’t most soap publications and talking heads applauded “Days” for the Will/Sonny storyline? I know a lot of people on message boards (including TVBTN) who say that that storyline is the only reason why they even bother to tune in. Personally, I don’t view the Will storyline any differently than when “As the World Turns” made Luke (a character very similar to Will in the fact that he was related to that soaps core families) gay or when “All My Children” did the same with Erica’s daughter.

  • JayTN

A correction to my above post…in regards to Sonny, I should have said that the character has not been featured on “Days” before, at least not in adult form, instead of “child form”.

I don’t know if the character of Sonny had been seen on the show prior to the casting of Freddie Smith; although I do believe that the character had been referred to in the past and may have been seen on the show played by child actors. According to Wikipedia, Judi Evans’ character of Adrienne Kiriakis became pregnant with Sonny (aka Jackson) in the latter part of her first 1986-91 stint on “Days”. If that is the case, have the producers/writers actually aged Sonny down (as opposed to the usual aging up), as the character would currently be in his early-to-mid 20s. Since Sonny is supposed to be a university student, I had thought he was a few years younger than he would normally be.

  • Kayla Rae

Well said, Jay, I couldn’t agree with you more regarding the Will/Sonny gay lovestory. It definitely is very believable to have Will come out as he did after having a couple of relationships with female characters. Very true to life indeed. Ohiogirl missed the mark on that one. And the Will/Sonny love story has received wide acclaim and I’m sure that it draws in viewers as opposed to repelling them, as you said, Jay.

In my opinion DOOL continues to deserve much better ratings year round. Hopefully the ratings will rise to reflect the high quality of this most wonderful soap.

On a final note, there is no accounting for taste and the dubious programming that often brings in high ratings is a mere sad reflection on the poor taste of mainstream America.

  • Mike

Yes Jay I had not seen the morning news posts either.

The late night ratings finally came out. They usually come out the same day as the soap ratings are released.

  • Kayla Rae

OMG…DOOL was is on fire!!! Today’s New Year’s Eve episode was absolutely phenomenal! Kristen has revealed her old scheming side to John and the sparks are flying! Go Days!

  • TimsDale4ever

Yes I caught DAYS on New Year’s and it was really good. Eileen Davidson did more in this one episode than she did in the entire last year (or more!) on Y&R. It must be wonderful for her to actually have the chance to act again. On the other hand, Y&R yesterday was a total snooze fest — again! The most boring New Year’s gatherings, if you can call them that, that I’ve ever seen. One prominent couple spent the night on the couch watching movies. Really???? And the enire Fen, Summer, Jamie bullying storyline is completely dry — and boring! I just continue to shake my head at how unbelivably awful this show continues to slide down. Where’s the bottom so they can go back up?

  • jonboyelk

Hmmmmm, I kind of enjoyed Y&R New Years Day. Differences of opinion, I guess.
