The average viewership increase From DVR Viewing ranks which of the top broadcast shows [by Live+7 viewers] had the largest absolute increase in average viewership by DVR between the Live + Same Day and Live + 7 day ratings measurements.
Do the Live+7 ratings tell us anything about a show's renewal prospects we didn't already know from the Live+Same Day ratings? No. Click here to learn more.

Definitions:
DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs.
Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.
Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate
Until the 2009-2010 season, we used a show's LIVE program rating or viewership as the base upon which the LIVE+7 day DVR viewing was added. Now, the press seems to be standardizing around using LIVE+SAME DAY DVR viewing as the base for the calculations, so that's what we do now as well.

Grey’s Anatomy leads the dramas. It is remarkable that a show this old is still a powerhouse.
nikita’s numbers?
Would have at best grown from a .4 to a .5 based on cut off on the chart.
Re: Nikita: Would have at best grown from a .4 to a .5 based on cut off on the chart.
exactly so.
Robert any reason you put the W18-49 for Arrow instead of the general adults 18-49.
That by the way for the poster who originally asked was originally 1.3 but Live Plus 7 was 1.7 growth of .4.
Mark:It wasn’t W18-49… w/18-49= with 18-49. the numbers I posted for Arrow (1.1 to 1.5) were correct for the 12/5 episode.
Good to see alot of the CW shows on the list. Parenthood went up a good amount too.

(especially in regards to the CW). It’s not that DVR and online don’t have impact on renewal, they absolutley do. Its just that DVR viewers (thanks to less of them actually watch commercials) aren’t as valuable as live viewers.
So based off of data from two years ago (an average for all shows, as such there can be some individual shows that have results that are higher or lower then the overall average, but I have never seen even one weeks data for the various shows on the CW.
Basically it takes 4 to 5 DVR viewers to equal one live viewer. So they do have value its just not equal value.
As for online, it also does generate revenue. but it like DVR isn’t equal to live viewers. Now eventually that will probably change but we aren’t there yet, and probably wont be still for several more years.
But even using the CW, lets look at this weeks Live Same Day numbers and compare the position of shows with Live Plus 7.
Live Same Day
Arrow 1.3
VD 1.2
SPN .9
Beauty & the Beast .5
Hart of Dixie .5
90210 .5
Emily Owens .4
Nikita .4
Gossip Girl .3
Live Plus 7 in order
VD 1.8
Arrow 1.7
SPN 1.4 A minor change in order here, but all three are absolutely not in any, sort of danger. They will be renewed.
Hart of Dixie .9
Beauty & the Beast .8
90210 .7
Those three were marginally tied with a .5 (we don’t know if this reflected teh order in live same day, but it could have). Higher then normal for Hart of Dixie, close to average for 90210, and sinking for Beauty and the Beast which is expected and should continue).
Nikita .5
Emily Owens (best it could have done is also a .5)
Gossip Girl .5
Only possible show to survive is Nikita and it has absolutely nothing to due with its performance.
See not much change from live same day to live plus 7. And while none of the above numbers are what networks use to renew shows (those are commercial equivilants), they probably line up fairly close to the program ratings be it live same day, or live plus 7.
What actually is even more important program ratings wise, is something that for the first year we have yet to see any data, and thats actual live only program ratings.
As that is the segment of the total audience most likely not not skip commercials. Those can actually have a lot of difference between 8pm shows and 9pm shows.
As an example when SPN had its 5th season and VD its first VD always outperformed SPN in Live same day usually with a .4 to .6 advantage (sometimes a little less, sometimes a bit more).
But when you factored out same day DVR use (which again counts, but counts less) SPN was typically scoring results only .1 or .2 behind VD. 8pm shows have an extra hour window for DVR viewing to take place, and it usually shows when you look at live only data.
For example Arrow is doing .2 to .4 better then SPN on average live same day. Yet SPN has higher DVR growth after the first day, both in percentage and in actual real numbers. Now that could mean more people use their DVR to watch SPN, or it could be that the difference is just that a larger percentage of Arrow fans watch it on DVR but just on the first day and thus are including in live same day.
Robert
Crap I was looking at my data for 11/28/12, for Arrow. Sorry.
Wow for Private Practice
Maybe is the day the reason why the show is going to finish this season.
Go Hart of Dixiw — CW should renew its only sophomore success & it is very consistent.
Beauty and the Beast is not far behind either!
I would love to see an average and/or median number just to see what that line is. Clearly some shows outperform the average and some seriously underperform, would be nice to know what that line is.
“I would love to see an average and/or median number just to see what that line is. Clearly some shows outperform the average and some seriously underperform, would be nice to know what that line is.”
I was curious what the current levels were too after reading your question.
Any kind of median/average analysis would lead to an infinite number of follow on questions (exclude sports! exclude reality! exclude shows with one word names!), so here are the shows, network, the # of new telecasts, and the Live+SD to Live+7 average increase season to date through December 9.
Feel free to do whatever numerical analysis you wish, but just eyeballing the numbers can tell you what’s “high” and what’s “not so high”.
