UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – December 31, 2012 – NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" have scored season highs in viewers 18-49 and total viewers during the week of December 17-21, with both show achieving 15-week highs in adult 18-49 viewers.

 

In total viewers, Jay generated his biggest overall audience in 10 months and Jimmy scored his top total-viewer result in nearly three years.

 

Ratings were boosted last week by the Tuesday, Dec. 18 primetime finale of "The Voice" and by an appearance on the Wednesday telecast of "Tonight" by "Voice" winner Cassadee Pope. Thursday's "Late Night" featured Billy Crystal, Tyson Chandler and musical guest Cee Lo Green, who sat in with The Roots, as well as an appearance by Jerry Seinfeld.

 

Jay's 1.264 million adults 18-49 viewers for the week is "Tonight's" highest since September 3-7 (1.340 million), the week of a major NFL overrun, and Jimmy's 776,000 adults 18-49 is also "Late Night's" highest since that same week (855,000). Excluding weeks of major sport overruns, it's the biggest 18-49 audience for "Tonight" in 10 months (since the week of February 6-10, 1.307 million) and biggest for "Late Night" in 18 months (June 20-24, 2011, 899,000).

 

In total viewers, Jay's 4.057 million persons is his highest average since the week of February 6-10 (4.075 million), the post-Super Bowl week, which featured the premiere of the prior "Voice" cycle, and Jimmy's 2.029 million is his biggest overall audience since the week of January 18-22, 2010 (2.162 million).

 

For the week, "Tonight" and "Late Night" beat the time-period competition on ABC and CBS in all key ratings categories: adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54, plus total viewers.

 

Season to date for the 2012-13 season, "Tonight" has stretched its leads versus one year ago over CBS's "Late Show" in viewers 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54. In viewers 18-49, "Tonight" has established a margin over "Late Show" of 13 percent (1.047 million vs. 925,000), eliminating last year's "Late Show" advantage of 1 percent. Jay has also generated a 25-54 advantage this season of 10 percent (1.331 million vs. 1.215 million) after trailing by 0.2 percent at this point last year, and has stretched his 18-34 lead to 18 percent (348,000 vs. 296,000), up from last year’s 15 percent.

 

Jimmy Fallon has established an 18 percent lead over "Late Late Show" this season in viewers 18-49 (671,000 vs. 570,000), up from 13 percent at this point last season.

 

"Tonight" delivered a bigger 18-49 audience than "Late Show" for the eighth time in the last nine weeks, while Jimmy Fallon has attracted a bigger 18-49 audience than "Late Late Show" for 11 weeks in a row.

    Unless I’m failing to navigate it properly, it looks like a re-designed Tonight website no longer posts guests beyond the current week. Possibly a maneuver inspired by a booking war with Kimmel, where the Leno people don’t want to show their hand and possibly reveal the gaping holes?

    btw, we should know by the end of February sweeps if Tonight is willing to routinely take guests that just did Kimmel, ending a policy that pretty much goes back to the earliest days of Carson. Late Show exempted.

    I’m a Nightline viewer and am pissed that its moving an hour later. So…I’m enjoying Nightline through the end of the week and then it’s lights out for me. Not staying up that late. Sad ABC made this move with a show that clearly kicked ass in late night ratings.

    Yes, sort of interesting about the new Leno website. It’s certainly a lot less cluttered than the last one.

    Just watched the episode from the 21st. Some days it’s worse than others…for this show Jay’s eyes rarely left the cuecards for the monologue, which was sort of weak. This seems to be a growing problem. I don’t remember him bring so dependent on them in the past. Does he just not prepare like he used to or is age catching up with him?

    Leno has said in the past that he is a little dyslexic, so maybe that is the reason why he sometimes bumbles his way through prepared scripts , butchers interviews, and mispronounces his words.

    The conventional wisdom is to go with the unproven young guy. How can you lose they say. Move Kimmel to an earlier timeslot and he will benefit from an increased pool of viewers to compete for. Many here want to move the dinosaurs (Leno and Letterman) out and can’t understand why the networks haven’t done it yet.

    So what evidence do they have that their idea is going to work? Let’s indulge their wishes and see what happens. Take the young guy, a funny and talented and hip guy with lots of experience who is practically a household name that tv viewers recognize. Let him have the youngest skewing demographics. Move him to an earlier time slot. Let’s put the odds in his favor and give him a solid lead-in that’s a comedy crowd. That lead-in could possibly equal or exceed the late local news. Give him that and it will be a slam dunk that his ratings will increase from his later timeslot.

    Well what do you know, that scenario has already happened and is a glaring example for the network execs to see. An earlier timeslot did not benefit Conan. So if Conan couldn’t do it, and if Kimmel isn’t able to do it, what would make NBC or CBS think that Fallon or Ferguson could increase viewership from what it already is?

    On the contrary, the conclusion they will get is that Leno and Letterman are the best they are going to get.

    They changed the banner on facebook and I have noticed new late night commercials too with Jay in his denim on the street eating and one with him and Jimmy with the NBC logo right in the middle with both of them doing random stuff. Must have done some re-branding in December they launched up. I actually like the new color schemes on there.

    I noticed scrolling along next week’s schedule that Kimmel is new next Friday too, that’s different as he has always been repeats on Friday. Probably a good thing but a bad thing for ABC PR people as you know how they love to devise their press releases with their apples to oranges comparisons :)

    Anonymous, I can’t imagine anyone would look at the failure of one or two guys as proof that new shows can’t possibly work.

    But even if they thought a new show is a longshot to work, here’s what they know for sure: Leno and Letterman are guaranteed to fail. The charts make the trajectory crystal clear. They probably also have data indicating how much of their audience will turn 50 in the next 2-3 years and it has to be daunting.

    For Kimmel’s first night at 11:30 with lead guest Jennifer Aniston, Leno responds with Emma Stone. Strong. Ben Affleck, who has a fairly historic tie to Kimmel’s show, also joins Jay in that first week. No rolling over and conceding in Burbank.

    It is very easy to imagine that when a broadcast of a game between the Chicago Blackhawks vs. the New York Rangers doesn’t produce great ratings, that one with the Florida Panthers vs. the Phoenix Coyotes is not going to do any better.

    That is not a direct correlation to latenight talk shows of course, but you could say that people do not see as much distinction between talk shows as they would between say 30 Rock vs Big Bang Theory.

    Talk shows in themselves are nothing special.

    Kimmel slams Jay Leno yet again. I’m not sure what he is trying to accomplish. To me, this sounds very insecure that he is going to not do as well as he thinks he will in the ratings so he has to beat the I hate Jay Leno drum right up to the very end. Seems to be developing a mild ego too.

    GAR, I think Kimmel has great nostalgia for that moment in 2010 when he confronted Leno and- for the only time in his career- became a huge and heroic figure in the culture. So he keeps trying to get that back, without noticing that the environment has completely changed and his attacks help elevate a mostly-forgotten Jay.

    The comments section below the article tell the tale, they are drastically anti-Kimmel. Would not have been the case in January, 2010.

    Yes he does indeed keep trying to regain “that moment”. But as you said, going by the commments, he doesn’t have the online base on his side at all. Even on his own facebook page, most there didn’t really seem to care and some were saying they preferred to watch Nightline first. I think ABC has fabricated that Kimmel is going to do so well at 11:30.

    GAR, I think he can do just fine at 11:30 and take the time slot from his aging competitors, but it would be in spite of- not because of- this kind of desperate idiocy.

    I believe the term for it is “fighting the last war”.
