Definitions:
DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs.
Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.
Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate
Until the 2009-2010 season, we used a show's LIVE program rating or viewership as the base upon which the LIVE+7 day DVR viewing was added. Now, the press seems to be standardizing around using LIVE+SAME DAY DVR viewing as the base for the calculations, so that's what we do now as well.

I have a question! Are these ratings important in terms of cancellation? My favorite show, Greys Anatomy, hit a series low with 2.9 for its winter finale and I was just wondering would ABC wait for these ratings to determine whether it will get renewed for S10 … I mean, it went from a 2.9 to a 4.5 which is pretty good right? So does it really matter if it gets a kinda low rating when it airs live, because it always picks up in the DVR’s …
@shaun p. GA is still one of ABC’s best performing series on a high revenue night (Thursday). No chance it gets cancelled – especially since Scandal, which is trending up, is dependent on the lead-in. (Not to mention the Shonda conx).
This should help. Point #2, specifically.
yay TVD 2.0
I find it odd that NBC aired 2 new episodes of Up All Night and one episode made the list and the other didn’t. I guess people missed it or recorded TBBT instead?
On second thoughts, perhaps NBC marked it as a “special”…
“On second thoughts, perhaps NBC marked it as a “special”…”
That.
Where is The New Normal? I assume it did not make the list because I was not featured in the episode? Bloop!
New Normal didn’t air that week; it last aired on the 4th.
Bigger denominator for Fringe slides it slightly down the list of percentage gains. Pretty good showing for Last Resort in both percentage and viewership gains.
Looks like eventhough Scandal was down a tenth from the previous week it made up for it in DVR. It’s still at the same 3.4 combined rating. GO SCANDAL!!!! Hopefully it get even better ratings in January and for the rest of the series
Arrow had the same live+7 DVR ratings as last week. Shows at least some viewers DVRed instead of watching in the same day because of no new SPN.

Grey’s Anatomy‘s series low is actually a 2.8, which it notched last spring. 2.9 is a season low. It will certainly be renewed for a season ten, because (A) its average is still a 3.3, well above ABC’s 2.2 scripted average, (B) its adults 18–34 number is very high, and that’s a key demographic, (C) its adults 18–49 C+3 rating registers the show as the fifth-highest rated scripted show this season (C+3 is the most important factor in determining ad prices), (D) it is still able to go high – September’s premiere earned a 4.4 L+SD with a 5.9 L+7, and (E) the cast is contracted through season ten, so it’s unlikely that the show will end before that point.
Do the advertisers realize this may be some of the same viewers who actually saw it the night it aired for the first time? It’s like they are thinking they are picking up a totally different/new set of viewers and that may not be the case. I used to watch taped shows more than once — VCR days — of course that was back when TV had many shows on that were worth watching more than once — or even once!
Tvd with a 2.0 that is really good and Arrow up to a 1.5. To bad they numbers dont really mean much.
Good to see Arrow going to a 1.5 i hope it comes back with a Bang on January 16th everyone mark your calendars its gonna be an awesome year.
@DenverDean and @Melissa , thanks so much
GA is absolutely safe for a 10th season, and I would think that an 11th is in the bag unless ratings fall dramatically. I think it really depends on the cast.
I was hoping to see The Vampire Diaries on the Viewers Gained list but it just missed the top 25 for that list, I guess. Fringe was #25 and gained .6 in the 18-49 demo and did not make the first list, it was on the % gained and viewers.
Vampire Diaries on the first list for A18-49 gained at #23, and 2nd list for % list at #10, however it did not make the Viewers gained list.
I was just hoping to see TVD hit over 4 million-5 mil with dvr viewers added, but fringe slightly beat it in that category since they share similar sized audiences. Maybe in 2013 we will see a CW show in the top 25 gained viewers. Also good for Arrow for gaining viewers, however that episode was low compared to the 1.3 it usually gets so that just means it made up for it in dvr views. Supernatural must’ve been a rerun since it has been doing really good.
lol at gossip girl it did not make any list for the finale. I guess all the viewers showed up live. I have nothing against the show however all the fans were bragging about how all the other gossip girl fans from early seasons would show up and take it from a 0.8 up to a 1.4 or higher. Oh well, guess no one cares about the secret you will never tell. xoxo goodbye gossip girl…. Oh and Please take the west coast trash remake of 90210 with you, CW give them a heads up and let them end the series properly, there is no need to keep a dead show around it’s beyond anorexic it reaks of bulimia with it’s horrible viewrship always below 1 million.
Great bumps for MF, The Middle and Last Man Standing!
