DISCOVERY COMMUNICATIONS U.S. PORTFOLIO ACHIEVES ROBUST DELIVERY GAINS FOR FOURTH QUARTER, DECEMBER AND FULL-YEAR 2012
— Discovery Channel Records Best Quarter/Month Ever Among M25-54 Delivery–
–Animal Planet Logs Most-Watched Year Ever in Prime and Total Day–
Silver Spring, Md. – Bolstered by high-performing new and returning series across Discovery Channel and TLC, as well as Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Science Channel, Destination America, Velocity, Military Channel, Discovery Fit & Health, OWN and The Hub, Discovery Communications’ U.S. network portfolio grew its P25-54 Prime delivery +17% in fourth quarter 2012; +12% in December 2012; and +8% for Full Year 2012 vs. same time periods in 2011.
Discovery Channel scored its best quarter ever in 4Q 2012 among M25-54 delivery and best month ever in December among HH, P/M25-54, and P2+ delivery, driven by new and returning hit series. Gold Rushwas the #1 program in all of television among M25-54 delivery on Fridays in 4Q and Jungle Gold andYukon Men finished as the #2 and #3 non-sports cable programs on 4Q Fridays among M25-54 delivery.On Wednesdays in 4Q, premieres of Amish Mafia and Moonshiners finished as the #2 and #3 cable programs among M25-54 delivery (excludes sports/news).
Propelled by hit series including Long Island Medium, Breaking Amish and Sister Wives, TLC was the #2 ad-supported cable network in delivery on Sunday nights in 4Q among P25-54 and #3 among HH, P2+, W25-54 and P/W18-49/18-34. The network placed among the top 10 ad-supported cable networks in Prime delivery in 2012 and 4Q with W25-54/18-49/18-34.
2012 marked Animal Planet’s most-watched year ever in Prime and Total Day among P/M25-54/18-49 with eight shows delivering over 1M viewers P2+ , highlighted by Mermaids: The Body Found, River Monsters, Finding Bigfoot and Call of the Wildman. Animal Planet ranks among the top three fastest-growing, ad supported cable networks in 2012 based on P25-54 and M25-54 delivery (+17% and +23% vs. 2011, respectively) and delivered its best ever 4Q in 2012 in Prime and Total Day among M25-54/18-49.
Investigation Discovery recorded its best year ever and best 4Q ever in HHs, P2+ and key demos, and its best month ever in December among HH Prime delivery. December also marked 44 consecutive months of year-over-year Prime delivery gains among HH, P/W 25-54 and P2+, the longest current streak of any ad-supported cable network. In 2012, ID was the #7 network for women in daytime and a top 10 network in total day.
Led by series favorites An Idiot Abroad and Through The Wormhole with Morgan Freeman and special event Firefly 10th Anniversary Special: Browncoats Unite, Science Channel marked its most-watched year in network history in 2012 with P/M25-54/18-49 and P2+. The network boasts 17 consecutive quarters of year-over-year growth in Prime among P25-54 in delivery.
Destination America earned its best year ever in 2012 and best quarter ever in 4Q in Prime and Total Day among HH, P2+ and key demos. Since its debut on 5/28/12, Destination America ranks #1 in Prime for M25-54 delivery among ad-supported cable networks with less than 60M subscribers and in Total Day for M 25-54/18-49 delivery.
Velocity had its best quarter ever in 4Q and best month ever in December in Prime HH delivery and earned double-digit increases across HH, P2+ and all key demos for the year, 4Q and December vs. the same time period a year ago. Driven by the success of signature series like Untold Stories of the ER,Shocking Family Secrets and Secretly Pregnant, Discovery Fit & Health recorded gains across HHs and W25-54 delivery in 4Q. For Prime delivery in HH and P2+, Military Channel earned its best year, 4Q and December ever and has logged 12 consecutive quarters of year-over-year growth.
Discovery’s joint venture networks OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network and The Hub each earned gains for the quarter, month and year. OWN logged robust double-digit gains for the year, quarter and saw its 11th consecutive month of growth and The Hub saw its fifth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth in 4Q 2012 across key demos of K2-11/6-11, P/W18-49 and P2+.
