Gh up is so great.
Nice for GH.
@Cass Rowlwland
And your point is…?
Shows recover from near cancellations like that all the time. House was nearly cancelled in its first season, and would have been if Fox didn’t have American Idol to prop it up. But it did. That didn’t stop people from saying that it got good ratings. Why should this be any different?

Just look at GH’s numbers it can bounce back at anytime and get over 3 million viewers like it did on Tuesday of that week. GH has been extremely hot so I expect it to keep heating up heading into February sweeps where it might actually average 3 million for the entire week.
I’m more convinced right now that ABC should just go on ahead and take back AMC and OLTL for themselves and put them either before GH or after GH. I would think that they would work better before GH as 30 minute soaps.
I believe that DAYS will get better overtime but they need a stunt to prop this rating up some. Someone mentioned Hope and I think they should do something worthwhile with Hope and build a storyline around her. The show seems to do better when she’s involved in something. She’s the one who built that ship along with Bo anyways back in the 80s and 90s.
I’ve seen Y&R lately and it has gotten much better like people were saying, it moves slow but it has the feel like it did back in 2005 which was the last time I can remember Y&R being good. I think eventually it will build. B&B is just rock solid this soap has a loyal base and they have a variety of people that they can use in the forefront and not lose a beat even without Ron Moss and Stephanie Flannery.
2013 seems to be a revival year for the soaps with the seeds planted in 2012. Maybe by this time next year we’ll be looking at the ratings for 6 soaps instead of 4.
To save y and r write to Julie Chen at The Talk. Her husband is in charge of CBS and Y/R is her leed in.
@ Save
B&B is the lead in to The Talk in most places.
@RW3
How is it a good thing that almost a half-million people tune out from that 3 million the next day?
This has been a problem facing many of the soap operas for years now, all these writers know how to do these days is to attract viewers for a stunt or a return and then not know how to hold on to them.
We have seen it with GH hyping their stunt stories like the metro court. We have seen it with the big two Todd’s story last year on OLTL that attracted a lot of viewers but many tuned out and didn’t come back til the last 2 weeks. We have seen it with Days big reboot when they brought back the stars from the past. We have seen it with the big grief sex for EJami on Days. Y&R did it with the big Clear Springs disaster story. They did it with the hyped return of Philip III, but then delivered a very terrible story with no follow through and people tuned right back out.
What good are the stunts if no one sticks around afterward?
@ Mike
Didn’t GH go back up to 2.9 million viewers the following day? GH and the rest of the soaps air five times a week so you can’t expect a huge number every single day of the week especially when a quarter to half of the audience changes everyday. There are soap viewers who will watch a soap live on their off day then they’re not there the following day because they’re at work or something like that.
You make a good point on the stunts but stunts can do two things for the soaps, they can help advertisers get extra eyes and make the networks extra money that’s why they call them sweep periods the other thing is that stunts can bring in new viewers or returning viewers. Most of the time they lose a bunch of those viewers after it ends but at least it gets extra viewers back to the soap. Sometimes you got a make loud noise in order to get anybody to watch. If fans aren’t spreading word of mouth like the GH fans did then nobody would really know if it was good or not and GH would be getting worse ratings than The Chew right now but it isn’t.
You’re actually wrong when it comes to GH, they have had a bunch of stunts this fall and their ratings have been high on even filler days. Tuesday was a filler and came off of the hype of Lucy Coe’s return which is a stunt but cooled off on Wednesday then went back on Thursday with no stunts. GH unlike the soaps you were mentioning has the ability to go back up after stunts. Remember this is December and not November sweeps so for GH to be getting this amount of viewers is a hell of an accomplishment in my book.
Ron C. is the new master at cliffhangers and that is good writing he keeps the viewers coming back for more so he’s doing things the right way. B&B does a great job at cliffhangers also that’s why they stay so consistent. Y&R and DAYS seem to have trouble getting viewers to really get interested in watching the next episode. Y&R is getting better but still doesn’t have that zing like GH does right now.
Y/R is the lead in for B/B but since they cinsistentanly have ratings at 1 point behind Y/R , it effects the afternoon lineup.
Sorry the only thing I agree on is that B&B is consistent. It has good consistent ratings over the 5 days and it falls into what u said about people being home, not being home, etc. To me that is what will save soaps, good consistent ratings that build over time. With an audience that is loyal to the show, and not jumping in and out due to what is happening or who is on at the moment.
B&B to me started out the week good, added each day, then had a drop off on Thursday, but picked back up Friday and was higher than they started out on Monday.
Oh look, yesterday’s Y&R had business shennanigans throughout the entire episode AGAIN. Now Jack needs Billy back at Newman, zzz…. Billy doesn’t want Victoria working with her father, z.zz.zzz…. Neil’s back at Jabot to Lily and Cane’s surprise, z.zz.zzz…. Adam will handle Newman while Jack’s recovering, z.zz.zzz… Sharon (who was afraid of her own shadow last week) is now opting for a power position at Jabot or possibly already has it….. I thought Sharon was ill ????? I thought Jack was so in to pills and only concerned where his next one was coming from that he wouldn’t care who or what was handling Newman now, or wouldn’t have enough concern to even care. (THAT would be a TRUE addict storyline). This show doesn’t follow any kind of normal logic.
I apologize to everyone for constantly complaining about Y&R, but the show has gotten so horrible that gripping about it has become my new hobby. Here’s another issue I’ve had for awhile now. I was looking at the cast crawl credits recently where it shows there must be about 30 actors on contract for this show now, plus another 10 or so recurring. You would NEVER believe that as they showcase only the same 10 every day. I’m convinced the actor who plays Adam has apparantly become someone’s boy toy as he’s on every episode AND in every other scene in those episodes. This has been going on for months now. An interesting character, but come on, one character cannot carry an entire hour by himself — but God knows — this show is trying to. We waited for Jill to come back and they’ve done absolutely nothing with the character. We no longer see any of Paul who is an amazing actor. Noah has potential if they would stop showing him and that detective having the same conversation over and over and over and over again where Noah says he is not in contact with that girl. We’ve heard this now for about a 1000 times. Move on already!
@Timsdale4ever, no need to apologize (at least not to me), feel the same way. Y&R has become a rudderless ship! S/Ls are illogical and rushed – too many newbies at once – too many repeat plots (didn’t Phyllis and Kevin just hide a body?) Theres potential for decent storytelling; writers just can’t seem to pull it together.
Oh well. Lets see if ratings for wk of 12/24 will show any improvement.
One of the first rules of writing for television is “don’t” have important events happening off camera — unless the aftermath is more dramatic than the actual event(s). Amateurs make this mistake all the time, but pros are supposed to know better. Y&R’s aftermath scenes were just so-so scenes that did not up the drama. People talking about a crim eis less interesting than someone giving a first person account, that is less interesting than showing the crime while the person recounts what happened, but seeing it as it unfolds is the most exciting because it’s happening right THEN. It seems soap fans don’t want to sit around watching people have coffee anymore — and currently a lot of Y&R amounts to that kind of writing. Action moves story — an hour of coffee breaks at Crimson Lights does not. BTW After watching a few websoaps, I see B&B is being written very sim. to some of those — B&B also occasionally uses bits of telenovella and (so-called) reality TV elements. Like it or not, this is working for B&B. Ratings at B&B are too good for them to change anything much in a time when soaps are at risk. If JG can turn Y&R around, he should do it — and soon. He got rid of ALL of MAB’s storylines (w/o decent wrap-ups even), and now his stuff is playing out. JG has been HW for apprx. 3 months, soon he should be delivering “can’t miss a minute” Y&R. Lots of mistakes so far: Writing out Nina and reducing Paul and Christine to holding hands at CL, among others. JMO
@TimsDale4ever, you don’t need to apologize. You’re entitled to your OP. Others think Y&R is fine with the new writing; I happen to agree with you. I believe it is less than stellar right now. We’ll see if JG can up the drama and stop giving us faux drama — like Jack’s faked heart attack. At least business at Crimson Lights is on the rise, lots of “dramatic” coffee breaks — LOL — and yet Kevin and Chloe are barely scraping by and plotting ways to “steal” money from other people!
Shoyanna – great comment – watching people sitting around having coffee does not make for great television. It’s basically what’s been wrong with this show for years. When I used to read SOD years ago I will never forget a viewer’s comment concerning this show. I, myself, had quit watching the show for several years prior because of this and just screamed when I read her comment which was: The worst thing about Y&R is the ENDLESS chatter between characters about things the viewer already knows. I have learned to watch this show in fast forward (VCR days) and stopping at only the points that MIGHT be interesting……. In a nutshell, this show lacks action — it’s mostly just repetative blah, blah, blah to the point you want to throw up.
@Mike I also remember in the 70s Y&R did the first tongue kisses, too. Lance and Lori really went at it!
I was just thinking what if the redhead hooker isn’t really dead and Adam staged the whole thing. Then it would make sense for them to play it off camera to fake us out.
With DAYS taping so far ahead, what is the date to expect a renewal or cancellation?
You guys seriously need to QUIT…………
Y&R takes time. It’s been only 3 months since JFP/JG started. It’s not going to change dramatically! I’m enjoying the writing so far. Writing out Nina, I was upset about that. We do need more Paul & Cricket on the show and a storyline but writing so far has been good!
Derrick, STOP trying to bully other posters. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Seriously you need to stop because what you’re doing is the same as bullying others with whom you do not agree. Enough already.
@jonyboy, the call girl is dead so blows the theory that Adam was setting up Jack.
@ALL POSTERS, please allow others to express their opinions EVEN if you don’t AGREE. NOT allowing others to express their opinions even though you post yours is a control issue or potential bullying. Please let everyone have their say, even if you disagree. That’s the right thing to do in a democratic society such as ours. Thank you.
