New Show Depicts Family Life in Raucous Summer Camp

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – January 6, 2013 – NBC has picked up the sly new drama series “Camp” for 13 episodes for broadcast in Summer 2013, it was announced today by Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment.

This summer, NBC invites you to camp.  In the tradition of “Meatballs” and “Dazed and Confused,” Little Hawk Family Camp is a wicked slice of lake-side heaven. In the one-hour drama, parents decompress with gin while teenagers make gleeful mischief and fall in and out of love.  Little Hawk Family Camp – where mother nature and human nature collide.

Said Salke: "In our desire to make summer an exciting place at NBC along with our signature unscripted shows like ‘America's Got Talent,’ ‘The Voice’ and ‘American Ninja Warrior,’ we developed a scripted dramedy we love with BermanBraun that has rich and dysfunctional characters in that great setting where millions of families and young people go each summer: camp.  Most of us have had great experiences at camp, and this show -- created by two of our favorite producers, Liz Heldens (creator of ‘Deception’) and Peter Elkoff (co-executive producer of ‘Deception’) -- is sophisticated, funny, and emotional, and we think it will be the ideal summer series for us."

The series will be produced by Matchbox Pictures (“The Slap”) and BermanBraun.  Liz Heldens (NBC’s upcoming “Deception,” “Friday Night Lights”) and Peter Elkoff (“Deception,” “Gossip Girl”) are the executive producers and creators.  Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein (all three for “Deception”) also are executive producers.

Does anyone know in terms of networks what as of now shows are on tap for this summer?

  • CBSviewer

    @ Jt

I just know CBS has Unforgettable, Under the Dome and (perhaps) Friend Me,
if Golden Boy is a flop it’ll certainly air during summer like the remaining episodes of Partners.
    ABC already canceled Weird Desk.

  • Oliver

For Summer scripted series, ABC has Mistresses, CBS has Under The Dome and Unforgetabble, NBC has Camp, Crossbones and, potentially, Hannibal, while Fox hasn’t yet announced anything.

More may be announced at the TSA.

no way will nbc air hannibal in the summer, they’ll either air it this spring, nest fall or do a preview of the pilot this spring and start it next fall

Some info on Hannibal and other stuff NBC from TCA here:

“Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal, as well as Save Me (starring Anne Heche), “might” debut by the end of the season. If not, Greenblatt said Hannibal “could fit really nicely” into the summer season.”

“Dracula (starring Jonathan Rhys Myers) will be ready for a fall launch; Crossbones, a pirate drama, is heading into preproduction; and Michael J. Fox’s new comedy, which like Dracula and Hannibal was ordered straight to series, will have its first table read soon.”

I’ll check this show out. It sounds like it could be good. At least it isn’t a cop, doctor, or lawyer show.

    TV#1 Right on.

At least it isn’t a cop, doctor, or lawyer show.

    Amen to that.

    also ABC has rookie blue!

The Voice is considered a summer show?

  • Yamaha

Kind of interesting as I want to see how this turns out and does.

The Voice is expected to run through the end of June, thanks to a late March premiere.

  • Jt

Should we hear about more summer plans from other networks soon?

  • Nick

IMO, NBC is smart premiering The Voice in March and ending it in June. That gives it a solid 3 months inbetween each cycle, and a less likely chance of viewer fatigue. Plus the new coaches should draw interest. NBC could have a nice launch out of that.

I think Usher and Shakira will bring record ratings for The Voice. I mean Shakira alone has more followers on Twitter and Facebook than all of the other coaches combined incl. CeeLo and Xtina.

What is also smart is that they will be starting with La Voz Kids on their sister network Telemundo from March. NBC has it in them to draw huge audiences from the Latin community.

I heard and I don’t know how certain this is, but NBC has not given up on “The Munsters”,yet! Mockingbird Lane was not the right vehicle.

If that really meant anything, shouldn’t have 2 & A Half Men gone up in the ratings after Ashton joined. It didn’t, instead the ratings went down.

  • Rob3008

I’d imagine that’s because Shakira has many fans in numerous Spanish-speaking countries outside the US.

ABC also has some episodes of 666 Park Avenue to air…
